Yeah, I mean when you say open world, the first game on your mind is normally Skyrim. I hope that in 2015, that will be The Witcher. We love Skyrim, that’s a great game, but I think that they have a totally different approach. At least that’s what I believe, I’m not in their heads, but when I’m looking at Skyrim, for me it’s a great open world with great storylines and great characters in the middle, whereas when I’m looking at The Witcher I have a great main character with a huge story around him placed within an open world. The perspectives here are different, each looks at things from a different angle. Our game will be about you, who you are, how you’re immersing with the world, how you’re interacting with the story everywhere around you, and how this story will influence the whole world.

You hear that, PC and RPG elitists? Even the developer of your holy grail, CD Projekt RED, themselves love Skyrim, even they believe it's a great game, and it has influenced their development process for The Witcher 3.

The thing that is encouraging here is that CD Projekt RED doesn't want The Witcher to be a Skyrim clone- it has a very clear idea of what The Witcher does differently from Skyrim, and it wants The Witcher 3 to provide its own unique spin in the formula. That, to me, tells us that The Witcher games will grow by this process, instead of losign their own identity and becoming pale imitations of something else entirely.

I'm not surprised. Much of the latest Elder Scrolls game are passable, but the exploration is next to none.

Come on son, The WItcher games are very well done, but they wouldn't exactly be some noble standard of PC gaming elitism given the type of combat engines they run, and the type of games the PC used to get in terms of the Blackisle stuff or things Troika made like Arcanum.

On topic: developers like a video game, good for them. As far as providing a toy box to explore few developers deliver on that quite like Bethesda, the actual you know game part of Skyrim? The combat, the character builds, the questing, and all that jazz? Plenty of arguments to be made that sans combat, all of it is done worse than Morrowind.

Skyrim was amazing and most people accept that. It's become a byword for distaste among a few elitist naysayers but this is merely based on it's popularity. It is objectively a great game which hits all it's goals.

I enjoy both series, and CD Projekt Red are a great developer. I know a few Poles who game and they are rightfully proud of them. It surprises me not one iota that they have good taste in games.

It's done differently. I'm not sure if it's done worse. Whether it's better or worse would depend entirely on your perspective when it comes to approaching just what an RPG's mechanics for builds and leveling should be like.

That said, Skyrim's quests are cancer, no argument there.

Skyrim is a giant turd and they know it pretty damn well.... However, said turd won a bunch of awards and sold a bunch of units so they figured they get Marketing by Association....

It's funny how they say this is a game about you yet you don't create the main character.

what does this have to do with PC elitists? Judging by the extensive modding that has been done with the game it's safe to say PC elitist love skyrim too.

When you've made a game that is half as amazing as The Witcher 2 was, maybe your opinion might carry enough cachet that someone will make a thread on it.

2014:

"At least that’s what I believe, I’m not in their heads, but when I’m looking at Skyrim, for me it’s a great open world with great storylines and great characters in the middle,"

2013: (Eurogamer)

"And Skyrim, it was generic; you could make the same quest a few times and every time [the] NPC didn't spot that you made it for him previously. To make this immersion every quest needs to be designed this way that NPC reacts for what you are doing.

The second thing, thinking about Skyrim, is that they don't got very good characters," he added. "I tried to remember five characters from Skyrim and name them from my memory, and I can't, because this storyline is very generic and exploring the world is cool but they missed it."

Hmm.

It would most likely make sense as CDP basically redesigned The WItcher in a cynical attempt to cash in on Skyrim. Bioware are doing the exact same thing with Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Thankfully we have Brain Fargo saving the genre. The hero we deserve.

Yeah that's how I read into it. It is a polite way of acknowledging what they did right, but also pointing out what they did wrong in the nicest way possible.

Further proof kissing ass is considered a requirement in this industry.

I don't think Skyrim overall was shit. I mean, its combat was shit, the story was shit, the characters were shit, and pretty much all the RPG elements were shit. But it was enjoyable to explore the world, so it's a decent walking simulator.

It's not a horrible game, in my opinion, but it's certainly not the pinnacle of RPGs, or the standard all future RPGs should be held to.

I hope you realize that every developer will always make things sound this way. No developer will outright claim their game to be similar or a clone to another game. Shadow of Mordor, despite having mechanics near identical to Assassin's Creed, is still claimed to be different by the developer. I'm not saying Witcher 3 won't be good, but I'm saying that statements like that are in no way an indication of how good a game will be, nor how good a developer is. It's just standard PR.

Skyrim is the FFVII of Elder Scrolls games... nowhere near the best, but praised to high hell because it's when 75% of people discovered the franchise.

Skyrim is the second best Elder Scrolls of last gen though... so it has that going for it.. heh

From willingly getting rid of DRM restrictions to set a precedent for online retail to loving Skyrim yet wanting to be different, they come off as such a humble developer. Whether or not they're really that humble I'd say they got excellent PR.

SOURCE, btw

....yeah, sounds like a PR stunt to get a cut of the open-world market pie, and you're flamebaiting. I don't believe anyone who's ever played Witcher 1 and 2 could say Skyrim has great storylines and great characters without being lying.

Good, I hope they can capture the same feeling of openness and exploration as Bethesda has done in Skyrim. I also like how they respectfully implied Skyrim's story and characters are second to the world itself. Trust SW idiots to get the wrong message...

I recall them saying they really had Skyrim as a big influence during development. I think what they mean by that, is that open world games are truly awesome, and Skyrim is a good example of how to treat your world and make it fun to explore.

There's no need to be upset. They will take the basic concepts of an open world RPG, but will also have much more RPG elements, and probably better voice acting and story and all of that unimportant stuff. Skyrim is always a good influence.
