All that snake oil really paid off it seems. How can this happen?

- Unfinished
- Unoptomized/unpolished
- shoverlware-ass looking
- basic shooting mechanics
- Dayz ripoff
- Boring stretches of "gameplay" doing absolutely nothing
- Horrendous framerate especially on the Xbone

If a game so lazily put together can be sold AND be rewarded...why do triple A devs even bother then? Nintendo must foaming in their mouths right now seeing such trash be compared to them.

I personally enjoy the game a lot on PC. It's a lot of fun playing with friends. As for the frames on Xbox; didn't they release a patch to fix the frames yesterday? As for the thread itself, I don't feel an early access game should be a GOTY nomination. Wait until the actual game gets released...

It was the most popular um... half-released game of 2017 by a huge margin. I can understand that being very hard to ignore by major publications. Besides, it's supposed to be really good fun.

It's popular and it's fun to play. In a world where AAA focusses on how they best get your money it's refreshing to see a game just being about fun. I'm pretty sure that's also why Nintendo games and DOS2 were so well received.

See the PUBG backlash is in full swing. Game gets popular so whats the best way to appear more hardcore than the millions that clearly love the **** out of it? Post a bollock thread on the internet.

Also speaking of lazy trash... well done on another great thread!

Anything that sells over 20 million copies within a calendar year deserves to be in the discussion. The game is wildly popular. And PUBG hits 1.0 on PC today, meaning it’s out in 2017.

Who knows, unfinished games should not get any awards unless there is a specific category for unfinished work in progress builds.

Sometimes a fun game despite the flaws of early access is enough to carry it. Just shows even if you have a polished and finished product, if its not fun people wont play it or its just limited to a smaller audience. PUBG is a simple fun game that people gravitate to.

Off topic, this is the issue i have with Sony. Good majority of its games are single player and focus on polish/story. Ps2/Ps3 put focus on simple fun games alike PUBG: Socom, MAG, Motorstorm, Resistance, Warhawk/Starhawk, TLOU(multiplayer) and Twisted Metal. Singleplayer games are top notch but to a good portion, some people gravitate to the simple/fun multiplayer games.

If Sony announced Socom for PS4(nurtured like its singleplayer games) could guarantee it would trump any of its Singleplayer games in popularity and pump life back into PSN. Seeing PUBG, sure Sony could come up with its own battle royal mode within Socom.

Have you actually played it? It runs fine on PC now and the shooting mechanics are far from basic - there's a fair amount of strategy involved with all the attachments, scopes, the damage system and bullet drop. And as for the boring stretches, this is dictated entirely by the person playing. You could have an action packed game every time just by going hunting for kills, moving through hot spots and stalking the edge of the circle.

I mean, you clearly haven't played it.

basic shooting mechanics... yea you showed your hand there. the shooting mechanics are excellent, though dodgy net-code can certainly be an issue.

its also not a Dayz-ripoff. It actually began as a Dayz variation then grew into its own thing. It basically takes the best aspects of Dayz and distills them down into a nice 30 min experience. H1Z1 is a Dayz ripoff.

I'd take a rough around the edges but original and exciting game like PUBG over some highly polished and boring AAA game any day.

I'd rather discuss how people act like an inanimate thing like a game should be blamed. Blame the people that nominated it or better yet realize it doesn't fvcking matter. At all.

Nominees for The Game Awards are selected by an international jury of 51 global media and influencer outlets, selected for their history of critically and editorially evaluating video games.

taken straight from the website

Pretty much PUBG got nominated likely due to the fact all 51 media outlets were probably high on the hype of the game and were likely playing it during the nomination process.

They all (or at least the majority) liked it so much they decided it was worth a nomination.

Forget that it wasn't actually fully RELEASED till yesterday, WELL past the cut off point, but then again I guess the wording of

Games eligible for The Game Awards this year must be available for public consumption on or before November 17, 2017.

Includes Betas and Alphas of Said Games. Let's give out a Complete Review of Monster Hunter World now while we're at it since it's in Beta this Weekend! It's available for Public consumption we can review the game before it's actually released right? right?

Still, Media outlets and Fans love the game and bottom line, they felt like it was finished and well made enough to warrant a nomination for the Game Awards.

With that Said it wasn't in the Top 10 games of 2017 list for Gamespot.

well two things.

1. its not unlikely that they (like AAA) cozy up to game journalists.

2. by far the games with the least amount of creativity, the most simplistic, the most unoriginal, the most bland are AAA titles. But if you enjoy them then rock on good for you

Who cares what it looks like..? Million so people are playing it, it has a huge buzz and it's been the talk of gaming for a good chunk of the year. It's not the goty but it deserves to be in the conversation.

Seems like something that can be bad in both cases. What is the point of having critics if they will give perfect scores and top honors to consumer products based on nothing but popularity? It is like paying Michelin star chefs to tell us why the most popular junk food is fine dining.

PubG is cheap, generic, and low quality. Doesn't mean one can not find it extremely enjoyable. I mean heck I love Windy's. I just don't really have much interest in being told why their new frosty flavor is one of the top culinary innovations of 2017. Particularly if Wendy's sold them to you unmixed, and promised to send someone buy to mix them at a later date.

@boycie: Game of the Year IS big deal in Video games.

If your Game gets nominated for ANY reason for Game of the Year on Websites or events, It means you did something RIGHT.

Getting that kind of recognition puts people who worked on a game or the studio behind the game on the map, getting them more opportunities and notoriety for their next job or project.

Yet i had some of the most memorable and funny moments out of any game in 2017. Let alone few hundred hours for $25 bucks. I agree with basic shooting mechanics and boring stretches or even game being unpolished in many ways ... but game is fun. Specially if you play with friends, is hilarious something that nor BF1 or any other, higher quality shooter in general, can offer as we speak.

Would have to agree with you. PUBG allows lean, prone, crouch, zooming in with scopes, changing the zeroing distance, etc. It's insanely more in-depth than most of the arcade shooters, which is every game on console, to my knowledge. The only ones it doesn't compete with are the real tactical games like Squad, Arma 3, and Escape from Tarkov, but that's not what PUBG is even aiming for; they are aiming for semi realism with an arcade finish, which is still more in-depth than most shooter games. Battlefield 4 and 1 are the only console FPS games that I can think of that even go near it, but those are still much more of an arcade style.

It's easily the most played game of the year. Of course it's going to make its way into GOTY lists.
