Nah, GTA will die before COD does.

COD will go on forever.

Obviously_Right
GTA has managed to continue to improve on its gameplay, though, whereas Call of Duty has seen little innovation since the original Modern Warfare. Look at GTA3, then compare it to GTA4-- GTA4 absolutely eats GTA3 for breakfast as far as immersion and production values are concerned. That is the advantage of GTA's model vs. Call of Duty's. GTA does not release games nearly as often, and when they do release one they put everything they can into it. Call of Duty is on an anual release model, and it's only a matter of time before it becomes semi-anual like Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero did. If CoD continues to completely dwarf anything else in Activision's portfolio, they will ask themselves "why are we only releasing this once a year?" And then that is where it will end-- assuming people don't just get tired of playing the same game every year with new maps before then.

That is true, CoD did hit a wall, but despite that, it'll still manage to stay relevant for a good amount of years, at its core, it's a good game that plays well and is very accessible, a trait many modern gamers appreciate a lot...

I don't expect to see a major decline in the series popularity until at least 5 years from now...

While I do think the CoD franchise is in a state of horizontal development, it'll take years before people get sick of it. With how big the franchise has gotten, it'll still make money regardless of if it sells less than the previous year's game.

Indeed, it will probably sell even more when next gen consoles come out.

GTA will eventually hit that wall too, however it will be a longer time till it does so because there is such a big gap in between releases.EliteM0nk3y

COD will die with this gen. They really aren't prepared for next gen with that archaic engine. They say they have improved it but all the games look the same, or, in the case of Blops 2 it actually looks wore than MW3!

When other devs start pushing graphics with let's say, on a new Battlefield?, people will get bored of COD and move on to another shooter franchise.

CoD will die in a year or two. They won't stop being released but they won't really be hyped due to a lack of change. Activision can just focus on Destiny and be done with CoD anyway. Plus, they still make money from Blizzard.

Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk have proved that Call of Duty will soon be next.

They also haven't cheapened the franchise by releasing a new one every year.

Say what you want about his motivations for saying what he did but you can't deny that, in the end, he's absolutely right. Call of Duty peaked with Black Ops. Of course, it's still selling millions but there's no denying that its glory days are behind it as a franchise.

There is no way to make sweeping changes to the franchise either, because they are stuck on a 2 year development cycle for each game (since they have two studios making the it). We will probably never see them change engines since it's cheaper and faster to just keep using the Quake engine, and even though they have made some gradual improvements and will likely add DirectX 11 support for the "next-gen" version, the series has become stagnant. The only way they could make the big changes that the franchise would need to stay fresh would be to take 2 years off without a new one, and something tells me Activision would rather cancel the series outright than accept it on a bi-annual or tri-annual release.

Well they kind of had it coming to them. Too much of anything tends to kill you.

At least they made out like bank robbers throughout the whole experience, and will still make out with a bit with each outing. There are fast products that make a ton in shorter time with the drawback of being worn out, and then there is the usually more efficient business practice of slow and steady but great sales. In the end most businesses want sustainable products, and some have been able to break that mold slightly (Apple is a great example) but they are a rare few.

Well he is right. R* takes their time on their games and they don't milk their franchises. And Activision milks the hell out of them. Just look at Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk they were milked to death and COD is going to have the same fate sooner or later.
