i was just listening to the FFX theme song and wow... it's a true piece of art, nothing, and i mean NOTHING can touch it especially if you've beaten the game .. wow this is really my favortie RPG ever, and the music played a big part of it.

here's the song: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=7TntdZOQRR8&feature=related

I swear there is yet a song in a video game with so much passion. anyway what's yours?

The Metal Gear Solid 2 theme. I remember hearing it and being completely blown away.

The Halo theme and title screen music from A Link To The Past are very close seconds.

The FF7 soundtrack. Best soundtrack ever. The whole thing, brilliant. It was MIDI and its better than anything redbook thats come out. I've even bought the 4 disc soundtrack that sounds even better than the game did.

Final Fantasy Music is amazing, followed by Metal Gear Solid series.
They really do such a fantastic job.

As far as my favorite THEME, I would go with the quirky SuperMarioBros. 8 bit theme, far too memorable for me.I hum it, and everyone knows what it goes too.

---------------------

Although, not as good as FF or MGS other greats :

Zelda Series

Halo Series

God of War series

Shadow of the Colossus

Rock Band/Gh lol.

There's probably more, but that's my faves.

The Sunlit Earth and The Farthest Land are two of the greatest pieces of game music to ever grace the industry. The entire soundtrack is utterly amazing and completely shows up every other cIassically composed piece of music in gaming.

EDIT: As for To Zanarkand... it's been a while since I actually heard the song and I decided to give it a listen. I am surpried that so many people claim it to be "the best" game song ever. It is incredibly simple and lifeless. It has none of this "passion" you speak of, no soul. It is just the same, very simple melody repeated over and over again. Unlike most cIassically composed music, it doesn't take that melody and push it somewhere, on a journey to a far off land with variation and counterpoint.

Beethoven, a master cIassical composer knows a thing or two about writing music with soul. This and this are two of his best pieces and showcase how a piece of piano-centric music conveys "passion" and "soul."

Yeah, Shadow of the Colossus. How could we forget that our ears were graced with such masterpieces...it didn't hurt the game was fantastic too.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!!! the song is very simple indeed, but c'mon it has such great meaning to anyone who played FFX, it's dark and sad yet still happy. it's THE combination of FFX.

the SOTC pieces are as simple and as "lifeless" as to zanerkand IMO, but it's not simplicity.... i just can't explain it but yeah ..

It is hard to convey any kind of meaning when you are just repeating the same phrase over and over again. I personally take my cIassical music very seriously, so I obviously sound a bit harsh in criticizing it but it doesn't really convey much of a message at all.

The Shadow of the Colossus pieces are combined with the imagery in the game to deliver their message, and they do it very well. Compared to the Waldstein they are quite lifeless indeed but not nearly as lifeless as To Zanarkand. At least with The Sunlit Earth, you are given a sense of hope despite having witnessed a tragic yet uplifting ending to the game. At least to me, To Zanarkand is like "pop music" compared to Koh Otani's work in Roar of the Earth. He puts together a melody and then adds different other levels to it creating a story, an experience instead of just a single sentence or message. He takes you to the Forbidden Lands and puts you alongside Wander in his journey and all the experiences, dangers and despair he faces. To Zanarkand just sounds like it's saying "this is something that is sad, be sad."

I don't know really, IMO to zanarkand basically sums up everything that's about final fantasy as a whole and puts it in the most modest way ever. what's funny is that i actually thought The Sunlit Earth, while indeed mind blowing, was trying to hard to show it's "epicness".

I would say the battle theme and winning jingle better sums up the Final Fantasy series as a whole.

The Sunlit Earth is the last song of the entire soundtrack, the last to be played in the game... it is supposed to be "epic" considering the build up to that point. Compared to a lot of the darker and heavier pieces related to the actual Colossus fights, it is a "release" from the tension and you the player are finally given a chance to take a breath again and realize that even though tragic, the game still has a "happy" ending.

It would have to be an 8 bit song just because they had little technology and still pulled it off.

Either

Strider

Mario 3

Zelda

Double Dragon

Metal Gear

etc.

Lol. I use to think so too. But then I played more games and came across:

Kingdom Hearts theme
Never Forget-Halo 3
Old Snake
Losy Odyssey Theme This one is so brilliant!
MGS4 Main Theme Man was this song epic, knowing you finally completed one of those most epic story arcs in a game of all time!

Those are the ones I will always remember. There's more, but these are the main ones.

Right now it is a tie between Final Fantasy X and MGS 2 for best theme song for me. FFX had a great selection that fit the game environment and it also adding the mood for the story. Well what can I say about MGS2, it was brilliant especially the intro theme.

Here's a small portion of my favorite game music.

MGS2 Main Theme

Snake Eater

Terran 1

Tristram's theme

Again from D2, Rogue

You know what, just go ahead and listen to the entire soundtrack for both D1, and D2. It's full of awesome.

A smattering of WC2 music:

This, This, This, This, and The Best

I'll finish this off with a bit of AoEII:

Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, and Here

Every one of these songs brings back an overwhelming amount of nostalgia, and reminds me why I love gaming.

Much like SOTC, MGS4's music is fantastic, though i can't say memorable. but honestly it was always there and it helped magnify every second of the game a thousand times... can you please link me to the theme song? :P
