Poll Best JRPG for a noob (38 votes)

Final Fantasy 3 0%
Final Fantasy 6 8%
Final Fantasy 7 18%
Final Fantasy 13 3%
Final Fantasy 4 0%
Chrono Trigger 58%
Kingdom Hearts 13%

I haven't ever really gotten into a JRPG. The only ones I've finished are a few pokemon games years ago and the gba version of the first final fantasy. I have a few JRPGs, and I was wondering which of these was the best for someone who is very new to the genre.

None of the above.

Pokemon. EDIT: Oh wait, you've played Pokemon. Sorry :P

Yeah, then I guess Persona 3 and 4 would be the obvious choices.

I found a video the other day on this and they said FF6, FFX and Chrono Trigger. I'm going to try FFX to get into JRPGs.

None of the above. Square made a game during the SNES era for people just beginning to get into JRPGs. Its called Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. It is a great intro into JRPGs and its a good game with some really catchy music. I recommend it if you're a beginner.

On the list I would say Chrono Trigger.

A few said Persona 3 or 4 which I'm not sure I agree with. Both games have slow starts and a lot of dialogue which might bore people not already into the genre. A couple more I'd throw out there are Super Mario RPG and Grandia II.

I don't think FF4 or FF6 are that easy to get into...Chrono Trigger is much more forgiving for beginners...however i would go with Super Mario RPG as the best RPG for new players.

Try Shining Force 2. It's got all the tropes of a good JRPG, a star warsy soundtrack and a great battle system.

Persona 3 & 4 are not only great for being accessible in terms of gamely but the world, characters, balance of social and dungeon crawling adpect. Great art design and soundtracks to boot.

But be warned, it is a JRPGs that will ruin all other JRPGs for you as almodt all those you'll play afterwards won't be nearly a fulfilling.

Stay away from FF3 until you've a few other titles under your belt. It can be quite difficult even for series veterans.

@xfritz5375 Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D or Xenoblade Chronicles X, welcome to greatness. These might be a little hardcore though, so i recommend the Mario and Luigi or Paper Jam ones.

Trails in the Sky First and Second Chapter is the closest thing you can get to the quintessential JRPG. It has pretty much all the tropes one can expect a JRPG, and it pulls them off fantastically. The real selling point is everyone in this game has a story. There is no nameless NPC in the whole game world. The most unimportant NPC in town will have something valuable to say, often part of a side story that evolves as you clear plot points. Just understand that the game is not something you will beat quickly. You are looking at 100 hours of a slow burn where writing is king.

Chrono Trigger would be another great entry point. The game shows its age in some aspects, but in so many others it was very forward thinking. My favorite parts of it are the combat system being a seamless transition and that god tier soundtrack. Just a warning, go in expecting a good, maybe great game. Its VASTLY overhyped, and that kind of ruined my enjoyment when I finally got around to it a couple of years ago.

I would avoid the Persona games as a first foray into JRPGs. My own personal dislike of them aside, it is a game that really benefits from being metagamed. It is much harder to just sit down and enjoy it if you care about seeing most of what the game has to offer because time is a real resource. If that isn't an issue, then by all means dive in.

Avoid Kingdom Hearts. The combat is awful, and the story, and by extension lore, is bad to put it nicely. If you want this type of game then grab a Tales title. Most of those have bad stories too, but some of them like Tales of Graces F have an amazing combat system to make up for it. Tales of the Abyss has the best story, which isn't saying much, of the few I've played if that is what you are looking for.

Final Fantasy mainline as a series is hit or miss. The first three aren't worth playing as someone new. 4 could be worth looking into if you can track down the PSP version. Skip 5 and just pick up Bravely Default if you want to play around with the job system. 6 is overrated, but worth playing the GBA or SNES version.

7 lost a lot of its luster because of how awful it looks. I only bring this up because many people bought it because this was Crysis in 1997. It is still worth playing because of its influence on the medium. Didn't overly like 8, it has a prevalent romance theme so it maybe worht looking into if you enjoy that. 9 was an attempt to bring the series back to its roots, this is my favorite one and where I would recommend jumping in at.

Final Fantasy X was OK, the combat system was great, the story not so much. Final Fantasy XIII and its other titles I haven't played.

See if you can find Paper Mario 1 and 2. As far as JRPGs go, they are very unique unto themselves, and at the same time carry a lot of the tropes and standards of other JRPGs. On top of that they are fun as hell and incredibly charming; some of the best RPGs I've ever played.

They are all for noobs.

Either way play Chrono Trigger. Playing other jrpgs over that game is picking a lesser game.

I recommend Pokemon and Paper Mario the most for beginning jrpgs.

Unlike what others have said.

Do NOT give Persona 3 or 4 a shot (nor P1 or 2), yet anywyas.

Persona is a game that is designed to be metagamed a bit, and several bosses will require you to be relatively fluent with jRPG mechanics. Likewise, in the case of Persona 4 (Havent played P3), SP is a finite resource, you only have a finite ammount of SP, and a finite ammount of days (though after the first dungeon you do get a way to resupply SP, but that requires a lot of money).

Chrono Trigger has excellent pacing, is very accessable, doesnt waste your time so much. Get that instead. After that, you could give Persona a shot.

Just about any 16 bit rpg would make for a good start. A lot of them are both fun and accessible. And tbh, it's arguable that those years were the genres best.

You can also find a lot of good jrpgs from the PS1 library, but many of them suffer from a lot of bloat and just don't hold up as well as their 2d predecessors. This is when the genre started getting lengthy tutorials and info dumps, tons of padding, load times became a thing and they were shitty, some developers started going far up their own asses with their writing, trying too hard to take their silly stories seriously, and least of all, but still an issue, those early 3d graphics look like shite.

If you're looking for all out training wheels, go with Mario RPG.

I would definitely recommend Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI.

Plenty of other games from that era will be just fine though because..

Exactly this. Jrpgs don't typically demand any skill, as long as you pay a bit of attention, you'll be alright.

The easiest Final Fantasy you could find are the GBA/PSP ports of FF1.

Seems like people are giving good recommendations. I'll chime in with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Paper Mario, Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door, or even Final Fantasy VII though that may feel dated.

And for noobs, I'd say Persona 3 and 4 wouldn't be great. If you're looking for traditional tiurn-based JRPG, I'd completely argue against Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts most definitely.

It's a REALLY easy game (aside from the secret bosses) and is a fantastic romp through the Disney multiverse.

Chrono Trigger is a bad pick. Why start with the best? It's all downhill from there.

Try Final Fantasy X. It's good for a beginner.

IMO: Paper Mario or the Mario and Luigi series is the best way to get your feet wet with JRPGs

Just go to town... You'll be hard-pressed to find a JPRG that's outrageously difficult outside of end-game bosses and the like. FFVI/Chrono Trigger/Persona 4 Golden/Suikoden 2/Xenoblade Chronicles are all top-notch.

Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, and if you can somehow get a way to play it, Panzer Dragoon Saga. Saga basically does away with every annoyance I've ever had with a jrpg, and so its a very approachable game to even people that are not into rpgs as a whole.

Definitely not Persona 3 or 4. I love those games to death, but they start so slow, a good hour or so before you even get to your first battle, that they might put you off. I'd go with FF6 or Chrono Trigger.

Once you've played a bit more JRPGs then I definitely recommend going back and playing P3 and P4.

For SRPGs I would start with Shining Force.
