https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/01/amd-says-rx-6500-xt-is-optimized-to-be-good-for-gaming-and-bad-for-mining/?amp=1

It's an interesting article. So instead of using software hacks and bios tricks to limit the gpu mining ability aka nvidia, AMD has gone a different route to screw miners over with this card. They reduced the vram to 4gb. There is no option for an 8gb card. On top of that, they use a 64bit memory interface, something that is rare in modern gpus. Normally 128bit had been the lowest for discrete video cards for the past few years. Mining needs high vram and memory bandwidth. To get around these limits for gaming, AMD has boosted the clocks all the way up.

I'm pretty happy and excited about this. PC gamers might finally be able to get a reasonable 1080p card at a decent price. The MSRP is $200, but I expect ot to plummet to half that. All good news for pc gamers.

Who games at 1080p in 2022? Maybe if you want 500fps in a competitive shooter (even then, the clarity from 1440p is so damn good).

for pc, the majority still game at 1080p. 1440p and 4k monitors are still rare.

the reality of pc gaming right now, is that people can't even get their hands on an rx 580 for a reasonable price. People actually offered $400 for my own rx 580...that should tell you how desperate pc gamers are.

I agree, but i think this is a good first step for pc gamers to claim back 1080p gaming from the miners.

Best case scenario of course. This card is almost unsalvageable for the miners. The memory is gimped and the bandwidth is a paltry 64bit. AMD will corner a market for themselves, because nvidia will sell their low end cards to the miners, while AMD will still have real gamers to rely on.

PC gamers need to be happy for every crumb they can get at this point. 2022 is probably going to be as bad if not worse.

i am having a hard time believing that. those steam surveys are from everyone having steam downloaded, many of which don't even game. People who actually use their pc to game often, i'd be putting money on most everyone using a 1440p monitor.

well nvidia is hyping up the uselss scam dsl like its the second coming of physx, and doing almost nothing for pc gamers while happily selling out to miners. Their shitty card thats releasing will all be snatched up by miners. The AMD gpu has a chance. Like I said, this card might not be for you, but plenty of people will be happy with it.

I'm hyping it up because PC gamers need every crumb they can get at this point. Not everyone is willing to spend $800 on a 3080, and wait outside in a tent for 3 days at bestbuy, losing working hours and revenue just to secure a graphics card.

This card will debut at $199, but quickly drop in price to $150, and even lower to $100 if all goes well. Thats a great start for many looking to get into 1080p pc gaming.

It's a bitter pill to swallow. I mean hopefully it does prove to be useless for mining so that its readily available at MSRP. its not the Gt 730 at least :P.

but thats an awful GPU. For the record im not a blind rabid Radeon hater...my experience with them has generally been good (my current Vega 64 has been a trooper).

To be honest i think even AMD know its awful but sure look it...you can sell any GPU in the current market. They could have gone at least PCI-E 3 8X so that people with older mobos could make slightly better use of it (though maybe even PCI-e3 X4 wouldn't be a bottleneck).

if you have an RX580 or GTX 1060 or better than the only reason to get this is because your existing card broke and you need a quick bail out.

I think it'll be selling for 250 ish in this current mad climate though.

I wonder if anyone is going to be motivated to make a GPU architecture that is useless for mining but still great at graphics though? i wonder if such a thing is even possible? Unfortunately it looks like Crypto is not pissing off so i wonder what that means for higher end PC gaming (and even mid level) long term?

And that is why i am not too bothered atm. But just to think that i could be stuck with a 2013 ps4 in 2022 makes me😢

Not being able to play MH Rise in a few days does suck hard, tho and i better be able to find a gpu by the time stalker2 comes out.

Why?

1080p looks good to me. My TV and monitor are both 1080p, and 4K doesn't look better enough for me to bother replacing them. I'll probably use them until they crap out.

I know enthusiasts like to shit on the GTX 1650, but it handles everything I've thrown at it so far. Don't plan to upgrade until at least the RTX 4000 series.

I still play gen 6 games regularly too.

What's wrong with gaming in 1080p? Not everyone has space for or wants those 4k monitors and If they are 240hz (or 360hz) then it takes a lot of horsepowers to run'em even at 1080p. In short, 1080p is still the goat and I don't understand why people keep saying who game in 1080p?

I game in 1440p and I love it! I don't see myself gaming in 4K anytime soon. 1440p/165hz is sooooo the sweetspot👌

@osan0: The crypto ponzi scam isn't going away. I expected SEC to shut it down back in 2011, but apparently it's an asset. While Bernie madoffs ponzi scheme isn't. Guess someone high up got paid enough to look the other way.

Can a decent gaming gpu be designed at the hardware level to cripple mining? That's the real question to answer. Personally not sure, but they do have geniuses working over there. The 6500xt might be the first attempt at it though, so let's hope it's successful.

Well I have a GTX 1060 6GB and a 1080p (ultrawide) monitor. The games look great on it.

In the next 5 years I might see myself upgrading to 1440p but 4K is way off for me.

1080p is still looking great, I got an ultrawide monitor recently and that was enough of an upgrade to me. It really feels different.

4GBs RAM, 64Bit memory interface, limited to PCi Gen 4 x4 bandwidth...

You're better off getting a Series S. It might be low end, but it's at least optimised and will be getting support for the whole gen. The 6500XT will last you less than a year before it struggles.

Buying a graphics card with 4GBs of RAM is a mistake imo.

@judaspete: @lebanese_boy: So you two are stuck with ancient hardware. This is your real excuse.

@judaspete and i simply do not believe you when you say that "4K doesn't look better enough for me to bother replacing them". The difference in image quality between 1080p and 4k is EXTREME. Here's what i think😎You have never really played a game at 1440p or above (and by play, i mean spend hours playing the thing. not just trying it for 5minutes at a friends house), so you're assuming that 1080p is good enough. When you get used to it, it looks "sharp enough". You know who this reminds me off of? ME, prior to the end of 2019 when i finally upgraded to 1440p.

Not stuck with anything, I'm still playing modern games with that "ancient" hardware.

Maybe you're delusional with the idea that you need the most modern of hardware to enjoy the latest games. 🤷‍♂️

Not at all, but a 1060 is really pushing it. I had a 1070 that i've overclocked a bunch, and know for a fact that it ain't too hot for 1080p and pretty bad for anything above.

Who games at 1080p in 2022? Maybe if you want 500fps in a competitive shooter (even then, the clarity from 1440p is so damn good).

for pc, the majority still game at 1080p. 1440p and 4k monitors are still rare.

i am having a hard time believing that. those steam surveys are from everyone having steam downloaded, many of which don't even game. People who actually use their pc to game often, i'd be putting money on most everyone using a 1440p monitor.

Ha! No way. I'd bet that most console gamers are also still 1080p. 4k TV adoption rates are still only like 45% in the U.S. It's probably less for the rest of the world.

@hardwenzen: You are right that I've only played in 4k at other people's houses. But I mostly game from couch distance, and 1080p is a nice clean image. Maybe I would feel different if I was inches from my monitor most of the time.

I also think most Switch games look good :)

No way that most console gamers are still on 1080p (and i am referring to xbox/ps gamers, not Nintendo). 4k tv's are so cheap that you can buy one for nothing. Also, an average joe adoption rate and a gamer that uses it daily are two very different things. A 67 years old guy who watches CNN and has never held a controller will have a much higher chance of being on a 1080p screen (hell, even a 720p one) than a 21 old dude who plays shitload of Warzone every day. If we're looking at North America and Europe, for the households with gamers that play often enough, there's zero chance that in 2022 more people are playing in 1080p than a cheap 4k tv from Walmart.

It doesn't matter how cheap a tv is if you have one already and most people still have 1080p tvs. Most game consoles sold on the market right now can't even game in 4k. By that fact alone, I wouldn't expect most gamers to be playing in 4k. Most people have no idea what 4k even is. I'd be willing to bet that most people in this forum don't even game at 4k.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1247334/4k-ultra-hdtv-us-household-penetration/

4K TVs make up 44% of TVs in the US as of March of last year. Up 13% since 2019 and most likely near 50% or above by now.

1080p TVs are losing their majority and probably already have since the other ~50% aren't all 1080p but 720 and CRT TVs.

side note I've been gaming at 4K since I had my 1070.

And this is the whole of the US, which, as i've stated above, is not what i am referring to. If we're talking about actual gamers, even those who play nothing else but Warzone, it is guaranteed that the large majority are on 4k tv's. There is no reason to even think of buying a 1080p tv, and people who owned one, has most certainly upgraded around the time the Pro/XboneX came out. To think that gamers are still stuck with 1080p tv's in 2022 is completely ridiculous.

@hardwenzen: well console gaming has mostly switched to 4k. But pc gaming, the majority have 1080p and at most 1440p. Unless you're a core pc gamer, 1080p has been dominating pc gaming for a long time and that won't change unless 1440p monitors hit the $100 price range.

Yes, and on pc (especially Steam) there's a load of players that don't play anything else but Dota2 and CSGO on their pc's still using a gtx970 so it is very different from the console crowd.
