Poll Aloy vs Bayonetta vs Lara Croft vs 2B (102 votes)

Aloy (Horizon Zero Dawn) 20%
Bayonetta (Bayonetta) 34%
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) 26%
2B (Nier: Automata) 20%

Who is the best female protagonist, SW? I think they’re all awesome, but if I had to choose... I would have to pick Bayonetta. She is a badass witch with guns, pretty hard to beat that. Who is your favorite?

The only one there that isn't sexualized is Aloy, so she gets my vote.

I'd rank them Bayonetta > Lara Croft > Aloy.

I haven't had a chance to play Nier Automata yet...but I can't imagine its protagonist being any more vanilla than Aloy.

I wouldn't call the new Lara sexualized. They made her attractive but she's not sexualized.

2B is actually used well in her story and Bayonetta has significantly better mechanics for her game.

From the list: Bayonetta> Lara> 2B> Alloy.

All of them are good characters. Although Alloy is bit dull (but more realistic character and well written character in the list. Just not my taste).

But if any character... My taste goes with Kasumi from DOA.

Chloe Frazer is the best Female protagonist imo (Uncharted: TLL)

As much as I love Horizon as a game, Aloy was bland and boring asf, especially taking into consideration her voice actress was suposed to be good

Bayonetta is a good character but way over the top to be considered seriously

The new Lara Croft is also kinda bland and boring tbh. Chloe Frazer was way better then her. ND knows how to create compelling characters

2B was a** and t***, nothing else

@davillain-: Yes, exactly, Aloy is a "fierce warrior". That pretty much sums up her character right there, with nothing else to add to it.

She doesn't have any humour or cynicism, quirks or flaws. She is a competent do-gooder, and I ended up skipping most of the quest dialogue later in the game because she was so incredibly dull.

It doesn't help that the facial animations were poor, but even great animations wouldn't have helped her weak script.

While she may lack chemistry and is very blend, I'm just glad she isn't another eye candy female protagonist, but I manage to grow into her when the main quest of the game got really interesting. I'm sure Guerrilla Games will do better giving Aloy much better character development if there ever will be Horizon 2.

Animation was indeed lackluster but not a game breaker to say the least.

This is pretty much my deal as well. And it doesn't come from any sense of social justice or anything, I just get tired of these hypersexualized women in games, especially ones in Japanese games. They're also generally a lot more annoying; since they rely on looks and less on personality, they're usually all "Wheee" and "Hey not bad for a girl, right!?" whereas the less sexualized (but still attractive) women in games tend to have better personalities. Even if they lack strong or likeable personalities, I still take them a bit more serious because they are relying less on "boner points" to win you over.

I mean I'm playing FFXV and doing my best to give it a chance and then *Boom* Cidney and her stripper outfit come out and it's like "Really? Come on, guys, give me a break". Then she opens her mouth and I want to punch her in the face.

Bayonetta and 2B are hypersexualized in a Japanese way and I'm no Weeb so I'm not going to pretend to understand what their appeal is supposed to be besides their legs. As far as reboot Lara Croft, however, I'm not sure why you're throwing her in the same basket.

Lara Croft is attractive, but I wouldn't call her hypersexualized and really only sexualized at all depending strictly on the player's perspective. I think you're being biased towards Aloy for being a plain Jane rather than the fact that she's the "only one there that isn't hypersexualized". There seems to be this counter narrative that just because someone isn't good looking that they have a better personality or are a better character. Sorry, I just don't think Aloy is interesting at all and would have to give the award to Lara Croft.

@Johnny-n-Roger: I didn't throw her in the same basket, I just forgot to mention her :D Thank you for reminding me.

I too like [reboot] Lara Croft as a somewhat realistic depiction of a typical "hot girl" that--and sorry, this time I will go a bit feminist--boys need to get over. She is not sexualized, but because she is attractive and has big knockers, so we (the royal we) sexualize her.

The video game doesn't treat her as a piece of meat, but I think the players do on their own, in other words. But as a female protagonist, I think she is one of the good ones; strong personality, smart, capable, and badassery gained through opposition.

TL;DR: Lara Croft is a sort of middle ground between characters like Aloy and Alyx Vance, and Bayonetta and 2B. It would be nice if we could gravitate her more towards the "oh, look, a girl. That's cool" side of things instead of the "OH MY GAWD HAWT GIRL LOOK AT THEM BOOBIES!" (of the old Lara).

Kind of random topic, but oh well. I'm going to go with Bayonetta. Not only she is arguably the strongest video game character in an action game, but she is also the embodiment of what feminism should really be. And no, I'm not talking about getting naked, I'm talking about having the confidence of being who you want to be.

Also the games kick so much ass.

I will say Lara Croft since Crystal Dynamics is likely done with this series indefinitely. I mean, their next Tomb Raider game they were supposedly making was some stupid Dave and Busters exclusive arcade game and they licensed the game for what I might as well assume to be Uwe Boll's next film. Yeah, series is over.

I liked the original 1.4, Lara Croft where she was a hybrid of James Bond/Indiana Jones. Glob trotting, confident, sassy attitude. The modern one is miserable and serious.

Bayonetta seems to somewhat encapsulate the original Lara Croft.

The irony with Japanese or even Western games depicting women in a sexualized manner is that in many cases they will conversely depict women in games as being more competent and level-headed than their male counterparts.

The problem with the feminist interpretation of culture is that they see the world through an ideological lens where everything in culture is, whether intentional or not, a way to demean women and elevate men. This is not an objective or unbiased conclusion, and they simply use this circular logic to extract examples that support their narrative. A reasonable person, however, will also recognize that many males in gaming are depicted as being stereotypically shallow, obtuse or socially awkward. That's just gaming.

Aloy. She stays a young woman thru the whole game, and does not turn into a professional killer like Lara Croft and other female heroes.

She is also excellently animated, with very feminine way of moving about.

Good voice acting too.

Lara Croft for me, she's balanced in pretty much all ways. Appears more realistic, also not overly sexualized or extremely bland.

I can tell you're very young if you think that Bayonetta seems like a "middle aged woman". She's appears as if she's in her mid-late 20's I would say and middle aged is over 40.

Bayonetta and it's not even close. I'd say the rest may actually be more developed as characters and all, but Bayonetta being such a badass that she can back up her extreme cockiness to me makes her the perfect action game protagonist. I might feel different watching a movie about her, but in the context of a game she's flawless.

I remember a commercial for the MTV movie awards a few years back with Channing Tatum and that heavy female comedic actress and it was a mock action scene in which she convinces him shooting back at their pursuers isn't as important as getting his shirt off and her sitting on his lap as he drove. It was funny and I wasn't bothered by the sexualizing of the man in the scene. But you know, humans and perfection................not really a thing.
