Sony's may have matched 3DS's original launch price when they released Vita, but in the end they still screwed up by making the memory cards expensive as hell. And of course I dont need to remind you all about PS3's launch price. Now here we are on the brink of a new gen. Sony has shown off the specs, features and launch titles of the PS4, and so far there's little to complain about. However, hopefully Sony knows they're not in the clear just yet until they give us a  pricetag. And screwing that up by charging $599 again like with PS3 could scare away most would-be PS4 buyers in spite of a solid launch lineup (assuming nothing gets delayed) and  all the pros about the hardware itself. That said, will Sony sinally be seeing affordable price as a must in making their first impressions with new hardware?

I think they'll f*ck it up by notions of their past, but the idea of $429 still seems believable.

IMO it will launch at $450. I think that's perfectly reasonable for the hardware and the probably huge loss Sony will be taking on each console.

Hopefully it will come with a contract option that is more expensive in the long run, but will entice many people with a much lower price.

No. Nothing with the name SONY on it is priced correctly.

The Durango will not be cheap but Microsoft will have the $99 contract model. That practically assures good sales from the start.

Whatever they do I guarantee Microsoft will undercut them making the PS4 look overpriced. $ony just haven't got enough cash on their hip to compete in a price war.

As long as it's not launched later than the other regions.

It also better not cost £425 again...

I'm pretty sure they'll aim for $400. I'm hoping the premium SKU only differs in hard drive size, so that I can just put a different drive in and get more space than what Sony will offer.

After the $599 US Dollars fiasco I think they will want to avoid any number with a 5 in it. Therefore I think $499 and maybe a cheaper SKU at around $429. It all depends on how much of a loss they can afford to take on it.

I think it has a good chance to be 400. Unlike the Ps3 it's not introducing and expensive new format (bluray). That really pumped up the price of the ps3. The cpu and gpu it's using should also be relatively cheap in comparison to the parts the Ps3 used. I'm not sure how expensive the ram they are using is, that could be the factor that bumps up the price.

I believe they learned their lesson and will not over price the PS4. Blu-Ray isn't expensive anymore, so that's no longer an issue. They aren't using CPU that they wasted millions on and are using off the shelf parts that have been tweaked for the PS4, so there's money saved. I don't see any signed this time around that they will be slapping a high price tag on the PS4. nb4: bu bu but gddr5 is expensive (as of it was so expensive it would drastically up the price of the PS4).

Let me add that I will not be buying one until they are priced at $300. If there are two models, I will wait til the better model is $300. I am in no rush to buy a PS4 anyways.

400-500 would be a good price, they didn't skimp on the technology inside and they are going to be supporting for a looooong time.

FYI.. 8GB of GDDR5 has a bill of materials(BOM) price of $100 over 8GB of DDR3, expensive controller, EyeEye pack-in(?)...It won't be cheap. I think $499 with the barebones console and $599 with their Eye Toy packed in and a free game. While cheaper than the PS3, its still a price that only the playstation fanboys will pay.

I think it'll be somewhere between $399 and $499, $399 being the sweet spot, but $499 would still be a fair price for what you get.

And I do think Sony will get the pricing right, they did for Vita (overly expensive memory cards aside).  I was able to get a 3G Vita, an 8gb memory stick, and a game for $300, so the memory stick price wasn't a problem from me at launch.

it's pretty obvious that Sony will not be eating costs on their consoles anymore, so get ready for fair pricing. I know a lot of people here have been spoiled for years and years, with terms like "loss leader" being a reality, but that business model is a dying one.   That's the funny thing about people criticizing the vita for the cost of the extras.   Those costs made the console a fair price.  If you want nice hardware, you're going to pay high prices.   Get over it and introduce yourselves to reality

Live is a Service I choose to buy, and where I live thanks to MS points DLC and Arcade games works out about 15% cheaper than the same items on the Playstation store, thus more than saving me my live fee year on year. Example Bioshock Infinite season pass 1200 msp or £11.99 but 1200 msp works out to like £9 saving me £3 or 25%

I dont expect the PS4 to be expensive, nor do I expect Sony to price themselves out of the mass consumer market this time.

They will launch 2 models:

$299 500gb hdd

$399 2TB hdd

They wont launch an entry level SKU higher than $299.

Whatever they do I guarantee Microsoft will undercut them making the PS4 look overpriced. $ony just haven't got enough cash on their hip to compete in a price war.

Sad times indeed for $ony. RIP.

HaRmLeSS_RaGe

This.  Microsoft can afford to undercut Sony at every turn next gen, just like they've done every gen.  There has never been a point in history where an Xbox console was priced higher than the Playstation equivalent.

The original Xbox, Microsoft was the first to drop to $200 (Sony followed).  They were also the first to drop to $179 (Sony followed), and eventually $149 despite the console selling at a loss.  That, and we all know what happened this gen.

Microsoft has always been aggressive pricewise with Sony.

I don't see why this should exceed $450 this time around. The price of Blu Ray drives, what had been the pricing barrier for the PS3, isn't what it was 6 years ago. Not even for ones today that are faster. I can even see $400 at launch being possible, but betting on $450 being more likely.
