7th gen was my first gen where the console war started. I started gaming around 2004, so I missed the boat on the beginning of the console wars.

My advice is to get the consoles early because if you get them too late in the gen, you're going to be playing catch up.

Also, I would hold off at least a month on most game purchases to avoid gamer-hype. For example, I doubt most people would've bought Watch Dogs if they waited a month first.

You started gaming in 2004? Are you even an adult yet?

I'd say just wait for games to come out... a backlog is a good thing not bad.

My advice would be to pick up an NES, Snes, Genesis, and an original PlayStation. Those consoles epitomize the golden age of gaming. Most of today's games are just dressed up turds in comparison!

Get a SNES, Playstation, Gamecube and ps2 and just play tons of games from those consoles. They are many times over better than everything available right now.

@drekula2: my advice would be to buy a ps3 and ps2 and just buy the best games for those systems the ps4 won't be going anywhere and when the games are finally coming to the system will be ready for them but until then enjoy a backlog of great games you have not yet played.

@millerlight89: I think he was saying 7th gen was first he jumped in a beginning of console war. Otherwise there had been console wars as long as there had been at least 2 competiting systems. Just back in the day it was between people in the playground and neighborhood not message boards.

@drekula2: 2004? So you are like 14 years old?

Also, buying a console early in the gen is the worst advice you could give, lol.

My advice is to play games from the previous gens.

The best way to do that of course is through *cough* emulation *cough*

My advice would be to wait until there are at least 5 exclusives on a console you're interested in before making a leap on a new console. If there isn't then you're better off either waiting or choosing a different console. And don't fall for 'the future promise' of good games. Too many people have done this and are truly regretting it now.

God, I feel old.

First, system wars didn't start on Gamespot. It started with the SNES vs Genesis. Second, tell them that gaming is primarily about having fun. If they aren't having fun, switch games, game genres, or stop.

I misspoke. I've been gaming since 1996 ; I'm 23. I only started really paying attention to games and to the console wars in 2004.

To catch up with the previous gen, a PC with an R9, FX-6300, and 8GB RAM should be much more than sufficient.

As for the consoles themselves, it definitely looks like a good time to buy a Wii U right now. As for the big boy consoles, I'd probably wait for BloodBorne and FFXV before purchasing, and find out who's making the new Crackdown before even thinking about the Xbox One.

All the people saying get the old consoles and play classics well they're not wrong but it kind of makes me laugh that 'indie' games which aren't worth shitting on compared to the old classics get an automatic 9 from all big sites because the reviewer wants to look hip.

My advice: get a PS3 and 360 and look up the kind of games you love to play i.e. genres RPG, action, whatever and check review scores and go for the 9's and work your way down. It will take you forever to get through last gen and there are a ton of classics right there.

Current gen is basically just regurgitating all that stuff with better graphics so worry about that later if you run out of ideas. If you go back to far you'll never catch up but whatever you do don't believe current reviewers about shit indie games that look horrible and pale into comparison against 'proper' games even from last gen. Crap graphics does not guarantee great gameplay despite what the pretentious dullards who review games these days would have you believe.

My advice for people getting started so late in the history of gaming?

Go back an experience the greats you missed. Gaming has come a long way since, but you are missing out on some spectacular experiences, and you can't call yourself "gamer" without having played them.

My advice: sell it and buy a 7th gen console (ps3, xbox360), the 8th gen isn't worth it right now ( ps4,one, U)

Playing catch up isn't a bad thing. You get games dirt cheap that way.

My best advice would be: "Enjoy, and play the games you like, do not play scores, no one ever won with such a mentality, loss of joy from games, and warped sense of what worth is".

Oh and "Be nice to everyone you meet online, it might catch on".

You have tooooooo many gems you need to play.

I would list the games out but there are too many. The PS2 gen was the peak for gaming. You will find gems everywhere. Do yourself a favor and play Chrono Trigger

Stick with the PS2 or PS3 era, or earlier.

This gen offers nothing new and the least variety ever.

What's wrong with playing catch up? I got into gaming as a hobby in early 2006, and i bought my very first SNES in 2008, for example.

Just because you started late doesn't mean you can't play some ageless masterpieces that you missed. Games do not cease to exist.

What I would say to a console gamer just starting out: Don't judge us gamers because MS and Sony brought out the shitest consoles known to man (X1 and PS4). Console gaming used to be much better and more exciting than this, in fact ditch them and buy a last gen console.

My life is full of waste. BUT, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
