Poll Action Shooter or Survival Horror - which Resident Evil experience do you enjoy more? (35 votes)

Action Shooter (Resident Evil 4,5,6) 20%
Survival Horror (Resident Evil 0,1,2,7) 80%

This is a tough question. I think Resident Evil 4 was the pinnacle of the action shooter Resident Evil. It's definitely one of the best games ever, not just Resident Evil. But I also enjoy the close counter elements of the original Resident Evil games. But RE4 kinda had that nice balance. So I'm leaning towards that... But Resident Evil remake was also a classic and a great game. It's hard to choose. What say you, SW? Where do you land on this very important topic?

Action Shooter...........Surival Horror can get annoying when having limited ammo, which in the progress sucks out all the fun. RE4 was perfect. They should keep it action horror, but make the enemies stronger/faster to balance things out, etc.

Survival horror for sure. I'm a sucker for tactical inventory management + heavy atmosphere. That's not to say I don't like the more action oriented style, too. 4 is great. 5 too.

Action Shooter to a degree but not to the level of 5 or 6 like someone mention 4 is the perfect balance. As for survivor horror I like the remakes alot but to me they are nowhere near as good as RE4. For the original PS1 games I could never go back to them not only the dated graphics but the awful tank controls and limited saves no thanks it's just not fun to me.

Survivor horror is the root of all RE games.

Oh, come on Lundy. RE7 brings back the survivor horror aspect of the series from that dreaded RE6. I really like the atmosphere RE7 had. RE7 only fault was its execution.

Action shooter. I loved RE2make I enjoyed REMAKE and code veronica but felt like I was fighting controls.

5 had great Co op and an epic final boss

6 had a lot of content

4 is really what makes me prefer action. One of the best games made like OP said.

Revelations 1 and 2 were fun too

I respect this answer.

As to my preference, survival horror for sure but I'd also say that RE was always light on the horror compared to other series. RE was always B-movie action horror versus something like a proper horror movie. RE1, RE2, Nemesis, Veronica were all in this vein. Survival Horror by mechanics but equal parts cheesy. Great games, though.

RE4 kept many of the RE tropes but turned it into more of an action game, but it retained the heart of an RE game for all of its new mechanics. Even though I'd put the Survival Horror genre as my favorite genre and I favor the RE survival horror games over the RE action games (generally) I'd also say that RE4 is one of my favorite games of all time, not just one of my favorite RE games. RE5 kept the action but lost the heart of what made an RE game an RE game, and as a result its my least favorite of the series. RE6 was schizophrenic, with some parts feeling like a proper return to form (Leon's campaign) but the rest of it was mediocre action. RE7 didn't feel like an RE game at first but it was a proper Survival Horror game, but as it went on the familiar bones started to seep through and by the end it turned out to be just as much an RE game as any.

The remakes have all been good, too. The old RE1 remake on the Gamecube was solid but I have a hard time going back to fixed camera games like that these days. Too many gameplay anachronisms for me to find them anything more then frustrating these days. I enjoyed them at the time but I had my time with them. RE2's remake did it smart, but updating the gameplay, doubling down on the horror, and retaining everything else that made the original game great. Shenmue 3 should have taken some notes...

Hey, I loved every minute of it but it was probably -the- most horror of any RE game so I get it being too much for those not fans of the genre.

Action shooter ruined the series. RE4 was a good game, but poor direction. From playing the demo of RE3R, there are things that feel we're going back to action shooter/arcady feel. Things such as huge red barrels beings placed all over the place (so dumb), shotgun reticle looks like its straight from an arcade game and this stupid dodge mechanic that allows you to kill everything with knife only is dumb af.

I want a hyper realistic survival horror game in the RE world.

I started RE7 in VR and planned on playing that way through the entire game. I got as far as getting to the main part of the house after the first boss fight with Jack in the garage but decided to wait for the PC VR version that never came. I ended up playing through in a 100" HDR experience instead which was just as good.

I agree about the RE3R demo. It does have that action shooter feel. And lol @ the red barrels. So true, but it does look like they took that from the original (never played the original).

They did. Along with the dodge mechanic and ammo crafting system (which was retroactively put into Remake 2).

Action-shooter RE is inconsistent. It includes the best game in the series (RE4) but also the worst game in the mainline series (RE6).

Survival-horror RE is consistent. All the mainline survival-horror RE games have been good-to-great, from the original RE (1996) through RE2 Remake (2019).

Overall, survival-horror RE has the edge.

I really enjoyed creeping through a house of horrors in 7.

But I also loved the zombies from REm2... nailed the feeling of being in a building surrounded by the dead.

Code Veronica is worse than Resident Evil 6 free. As bad as the campaign in RE6 is, outside of Vanquish (and arguably even with vanquish), no TPS has deeper combat mechanics than RE6. All the quick commands n shit are pretty sick, and the game shines in mercs mode. I think the campaigns pretenses with being a horror game actually hold RE6 back.

Love survival horror and action shooters, I think Resident Evil 1,2,3 & code Veronica were great survival horror.

4 was a an awkward mix of the two I never liked it as I don't think it did either survival horror or action shooter well.

5 and 6 I don't like either, although would lean towards them over 4.

A bit of both really. I didn't even try VR for 7, nope f that. I loved 7 on a screen. I loved 4 though as well. 5/6 were meh. 1/2 were great. VR would be perfect for the rail shooter spin offs though.

That's a very strong claim. Are you suggesting RE6 has deeper combat mechanics than the likes of RE 4 & 5, Gears of War, Max Payne, Uncharted, The Last of Us, etc.? Can you maybe explain what you mean?

Oh, and by the way...

Oh, and by the way...

Code Veronica > RE3 Nemesis

Yes.

First of all Gears of War and any cover based shooter is completely off the board lol. Wall bouncing in mp is cool, but it's like the only technical shit to get good at. And 6's command moves give you options you just don't have in 4 and 5. Last of Us mechanics are whatever, most of the depth is a product of situation less your own tools (ala Souls shit). 6 has sauce fam, highly recommend looking up guides on the stuff you have that the game does a dreadful job of straight up never explaining, and playing mercs.

I'll try to dig up an old post i had on a friends forum and see if it fits lol

So I'm actually catching up on playthrough Resi 6 before I finally give 7 a spin.

Mixed feelings, most of them are yeah the game isn't good, but it is good? but it isn't good, but it's not good, but it is tho? feels me?

Let me explain.

Mechanics: RE6 doing a shit job of actually explaining its mechanics aside, actually has some neat shit other games in its own series or frankly tps games simply lack. First of all the quick weapon select is a boon in its favor, as is the needing to heal in real time. Lets be real, the fact that you can pause n heal isn't one of RE4's best qualities. Legendary game not with standing. But figure, you have more or less all of the same aspects of RE4's core shooting, pick a spot, stun lock, and now you can do things with them. Group knockdowns, suplexes, explosions, shooting shit out of the air.

The quick commands are genius and its a mistake the game doesn't have that shit written down or told to the player.

R2+square = instantly mixes the herbs in your inventory, and puts the combined herbs in your little tic tacs holder thing. Including red herbs. So no down time mixing shit, just clean it up.

Your melees are governed by a stamina system. On top of the knife not locking down as quickly in a game where you get shot (an easy exploit in the greatest video game of all time named Resident Evil 4, stfu tomas), you have something to manage. How you regain stamina faster? Get behind cover or be prone on the ground, But both things leave you highly vulnerable and limited in terms of options in a given moment.

Melee attacks have a 3 hit combo, with the 3rd hit being a context sensitive hit that knocks them down, which you then have to go up to the body and head stomp their face. Or, if you time it right with the enemy swinging right at you, you can actually parry them and insta kill them. OR if you time it right with the enemy behind you, you will back hand them, and get a context sensitive knockout kill. OR you shoot them in the face n do a suplex.

You can run n dash slide. It's rad. You can also do this while shooting in all different direction. Slide while planting a remote bomb, getting up n out of dodge, and blowing shit up back where you planted the bomb. And yeah its pretty fucking great, running n sliding in shooters rocks.

While aiming you can either roll to dodge or duck. Both have their uses. Duck helps with horizontal attacks, and keeps you in the immediate action ready to get your suplex in on counter hits. Roll gets you out of vertical attacks n iframes during gunfire, so you can roll n counter shoot, but the trade off is you probably now need to run up to get your melee kill.

If you quick tap aim n shoot, you do this quick shot thing and each successive fire drains more stamina. But you do these quick shots that stunlocks enemies near you, all while looking mad fly I might add. It's stylish, and functional for crowd control.

There is a nifty back roll, tho that could be better timed.

Where the game fucks itself is the scenarios. First of all the why the **** is the shooting itself so good, if I'm going to be forced to do shit that ISNT THE FUCKING SHOOTING!!! I just want murder ass murder people, i don't want to walk for an hour as Leon S Kennedy pretending the game has atmosphere. I can slide n plant remote mines, I'm not scared lol, the opposite even. **** the stealth segments, that snow level, the quick time events that never end, the bad vehicle segments, the underwater thing where you just move the stick forward, "puzzles". Also the RE community lied. They said leon was the only decent campaign. Sike his campaign sucks. Chris's campaign is the best one by virtue of it being the most action heavy, also good god at Chris Redfield's biceps. Why does he even wear a shirt?

I want an action Resi game where you play as Chris Redfield, bandana, no shirt, bringing his beefcake self n justice to neo umbrella. Murdering ass murdering people, zombies, monsters, business men, women, evil dogs, witches, **** it, have him shoot aliens. It's Resident Evil, they should treat the lore with the same level of respect I do, none what so ever!

The other part is the action has obvious level design short comings, without going back through levels n having more detailed notes. I'd say most of it stems from a lack of variation of scenarios like RE4 had. Which had all sorts of high low scenarios, moving mine cart levels which had you accounting for momentum, environmental traps n props like dragon statues that breath fire, or those two ganados n regular ganados you have to manage, while having bells in the area to dictate where dudes run too. RE6 is more straight forward n cut n dry. A lot of go into a room, you are bunkered into a position, and dudes are coming at you from 3 major directions. RE4 had some, if not a lot of that, but better spread out, and usually hype as **** when it happened. In RE6, it's t he base set up. And I'd wager the game has less enemies than the other RE games, but I'm too lazy to fact check that.

But really the bigger problem, the game is a good shooting game, it routinely gets in the way of you doing shooting. Just let me shoot.

"but its not horror"..........we're talking about the same franchise where in the first game, THE FIRST GAME, I ended it by shooting the final boss with a rocket launcher. Get a grip.

Mercenaries bangs, but leaves something to be desired. The way Resi enemies are slow n stupid running up to you, works better when you're stationary. When you can move as much as these guys can, having more mobile enemies would help. And the lack of them undermines how good mercenaries can be.

It kind of reminds me of Max Payne 3, except I can skip the cutscenes and the mechanics are better. But similar issue, get the **** out of the way, and let me kill things. pls. As it stands, I don't know it like ranges between a 4-6/10, but I want to love it like its a fucking 7, the mechanics are so good!, but the gameplay is so wack because of the set ups.

And hell no to CV over Nemesis. Classic resi to me is live or die by its puzzle box and path finding, and Code Veronica has noticeable drawbacks in that department. Even more of a linear title, there is a reason its speed run isn't as fun to learn as the one for classic nemesis. Plus both games go a bit heavy on the action segments, but Nemesis has that nifty dodge mechanic (which ........admittedly looks more brain dead in the remake), and personally a better arsenal.

Oh and I did forget Resident Evil 0, that one actually is the worst one, but then its Code Veronica, and then yeah its Resident Evil 6 lol

Of course you can't edit the format of that. I hate this forum.

@jg4xchamp: Wow, that's quite an in-depth explanation of RE6. I might actually try giving RE6 another chance (and it's probably a good time as any, with the C-Virus outbreak and all).

As for Nemesis, I found it disappointing. Granted, it has more sophisticated mechanics than Code Veronica. But Nemesis fails as a sequel. It's just a re-tread and/or side-story of RE2. Whereas Code Veronica is a true sequel to RE2. Code Veronica was originally intended to be the actual RE3, before Sony convinced Capcom to give the RE3 title to Nemesis.

Rather have a well executed safe sequel than something that just tries these days. Execution still counts, CV being more of a technical showcase aside, its gameplay is a noticeable downgrade. Where as Nemesis works as a side grade, and sort of the first glimpse at more actiony resi. I also don't think that game suffers from poor tail ends the way OG1 n 2 do, since its action is more up to snuff.

Albeit yeah the game doesn't have anything as good as The Mansion or the Police Station.

Survival Horror. I enjoyed 1-3 and Code Veronica a lot more than the newer action games. 4 started the action oriented gameplay. It was a good game, it just did not really feel like Resident Evil to me.
