Poll 7 Years Anniversary of GTA V. Best GTA? If not which was? (63 votes)

GTA V 17%
GTA IV 10%
GTA San Andreas 27%
GTA Vice City 41%
GTA III 5%

This week marks the 7 year Anniversary of GTA V's release. Ever since it's release it has sold 130 million copies and counting over multiple platforms. I played it on PC all maxed out and after seeing it on the console version I can say it's much, much better on the PC. I have to say GTA V in my opinion is the best of the series. I would say San Andreas comes close when it comes to the storyline but having 3 protagonists and switching between characters and doing separate missions for each characters was a brilliant idea on the part of Rockstar. I found GTA IV okay, I found GTA IV very dark and gloomy, Liberty City seemed cloudy all the time and the missions consisted of doing various missions for various mob bosses which kind of got repetitive. While they game did lighten up with the expansions Liberty City Stories and especially with TBoGT I would probably still rate it behind San Andreas (at least in terms of story).

GTA V I found had much greater variety of missions and the 3 protagonists life story was a welcome diversity in the game. Michael who is going through a mid-life crisis with bratty teenagers, Trevor who is just crazy and Franklin trying to do what he can to have a better life for himself. These three characters I think was a brilliant way to set the games premise. Having been to LA, I was shocked at how big the environment is in GTA V and the attention to detail Rockstar paid in re-creating LA and parts of Southern California with famous locations like Rodeo drive, Hollywood Hills. The voice acting is top notch and brings the characters to life. And the setting with the sunshine and the lighting effects (especially on the PC) made you feel like you are actually in Sunny Southern California and making the game way more vibrant than GTA IV. I thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece, wished it was even a bit longer even though put in close to 50 hours in the game.

But what's your guys opinion? Best in the series if not which one was?

Always GTA San Andreas and that's because it was the first time an MC can actually swim and that made the game not too difficult cause getting drown over a simple pond of water was ridiculous and besides, San Andreas offer more fun activities to do for its time.

I mean, GTAV is good and all, but it just didn't capture what made San Andreas so fun.

Any GTA & best don't belong in the same sentence together, terrible franchise.

Vice City is the best. San Andreas is the size of an ocean but has the depth of a pond.

It’s crazy how much this game sold. My favourite is GTAV, I really love the whole three protagonists thing and this is the best looking and playing game in the franchise. My sentimental favourite though will probably always be Vice City. I just really love the time period, music selection, and general vibe of that game.

GTA5 is only popular due to online. For me Vice City was the best.

Very nicely put. Although, I don't know if San Andreas outdoes the size of GTA V (in terms over all square miles). Vice City I would say has a soft spot in my heart. It captured the 80's vibe well in my opinion.

Totally agree, I think it was a brilliant game design decision on the part of Rockstar. Got bored of playing one character? Switch to the other. The attention to detail was amazing in GTA V and some of the story line is hilarious along with talk radio in the game.

I do agree with the sentimentality of Vice City. The game had a great vibe, probably the only game that captured the 80's well along with 80s music. Heck you could probably use the game's music soundtrack as the 'best of 80s music'.

Meh. GTA is just like the yearly sports games, only there is a longer interim.

They are all basically the same, just bigger or looks nicer.

@dxmcat: Exactly. Its most overrated series of all time that always get 10s. GTA5 is most mainstream game of all time apeal to lowest common denominator.

Vice city easily. I would love another game in the same time period and area. But R* is a multiplayer studio now...

Vice City and it isn't even relatively close.

Overall it's probably the most overrated franchise of all time. Like I always say, GTA is a jack of all trades and a master of none.

San Andreas. Hundreds of hours of fun with the best variety of fun activities ie not yoga.

The worst soundtrack though. Even the thematic hip hop selection was crap.

San Andreas is still my favourite, followed by Vice City.

Man I'd love a remake of those in the GTA V engine.

Normally, I would agree and it certainly comes off of as that given the number of copies it sold. But the new innovations it has like the ability to play 3 different characters and switching between them, the 3 protagonists and how their lives are intertwined, the voice acting, and the stunning attention to detail in re-creating LA (you would understand if you have been to real LA in real life). I would say it was well executed game.

I think people got sick of it due to GTA Online's popularity and make it seem like another Call of Duty cash cow which appeals to the lowest common denominator. If you say Call of Duty series and what's it become then I might agree.

Chinatown Wars rocked, especially the DS original version with the touch screen/stylus. The scratch card and drug dealing minigames turned out to be surprisingly addictive.

I'm going with V because of variety and atmosphere 4 was close though. GTAV is just a amazing open world game it's my most replayed game this generation on PC. Also playing it in VR was a trip on my Oculus Rift using Vorpx it was so cool just flying around downtown listening to my custom songs. For me GTAV is just a feel good game from the soundtrack to the location and characters also the gunplay feel pretty great on PC with the mouse headshots can be satisfy especially with Micheal's slomo ability.

GTA as a series is just the alpha stage to RDR. They all sucked. The online portion of GTA5 is the reason why Rockstar isn't releasing shit, so its not the best gta, its by far the worse.

Saints Row 3 was far better imo.

Combat, driving, missions, characters, character creator etc.... Emphasis on "fun", like, the reason we fucking play games.

It's how I would imagine the original games updated more so than IV.

Honestly can't remember IV's final mission, some shit about revenge? Do remember Bonnie Tyler booming through as make way through goobers, that was awesome.

Sorry but the PSP version was so much better without using the stylus and looks better on PSP over the DS version in my opinion. But overall, I did like Chinatown Wars as it was the first time you get to play an Asian MC.

@davillain-: Oh for sure the PSP version was far superior in visuals and performance, however I feel like something was lost in translation when it was ported over. The DS original had a unique cell shaded art style, almost how I imagine an N64 GTA game would have looked like.

Also, I really enjoyed the stylus controls. They added a bit of immersion when doing certain things in game. You're right though the Chinese protagonist made it an interesting new entry into the series. Best GTA game in my opinion.

Yep, it was pretty amazing given the technical limitations of the DS. Well it's still there and cheap for anyone who hasn't experienced it yet! :)

@thegreatchomp: Not me, but GTA 3 was the most revolutionary game in the series. Arguably the most revolutionary game of the 21st century.

I respect that.

My first GTA was Vice City though, which was just better in every way but did come out a year later so changed pretty much nothing. So I tried GTA3 and thought it sucked, but I cannot imagine what it was like for those playing it in 2001 for the first time.
