3DS powerful but at what cost?

This thing sounds like its going to be the most advanced gaming tech ever. How much will this cost? as powerful as the ps3 is it can barely do 3d do the 3DS has to be more than a ps3 and they were able to shrink it down to handheld size. More powerful than a ps3 and as flexible than a droid it can't cost less than $400.

If this tech is as powerful as rumors say then I wouldnt doubt Nintendo somehow pulled it off efficiently and cheaply so expect thier pricing range to not change.

A real concern would be battery life.

The recent rumors also say Tegra is gone.

I expect it to be somewhat affordable and powerful enough to make any current DS owner go OMFG!!!!!!!

DOLLARS seriously it won't be as powerful as the PS3 and I'm sure the PS3 can handle 3D, or they wouldn't release it,3D isn't very new and can easily be adjusted to so no biggy and if you have seen 3D recently with the new 3D glasses it's nothing powerful it's just a gimmick IMOGeneralHawx

Well, it may be powerful but that doesn't mean anything if the 3D effects are taking up a huge amount of the available power. The graphics may be worse than the gamecube or right around it even though the power of the system itself might be much higher.

I know i said 350 some time ago but seeing the time of release it would be a bit crazy. I suppose 300 then. But not much less. I know about the 250 rule thing but this situation hasn't occured before. If there will ever be a moment to release a powerful handheld it is this time. So i suppose 300 with continued support for DS for a long time with different kind of games.

And the handhelds certainly have no rule... they've just been getting higher and higher. $79 for Gameboy Color, $99 for Gameboy Advance, $149 for Nintendo DS, $169 for Nintendo DSi (debut prices).

To be fair, I'm not adjusting for inflation [that $199 NES is equivalent to $391 today], which should always be considered. Nor do I think Nintendo will release a $599 UbEr hAnDhElD... but they could certainly go over $200 if they felt bold enough that their product would still sell.

I'll tell you one thing....

I think Nintendo has learned from Sony's mistake with the PSPGo that it's not a good idea to have a $250 handheld.

Let's at least hope that's the case.

I don't think 3DS it would rival PS3 i.e. RSX's shader power is generally similar to any other 24 pixel pipeline + 8 vextex pipeline G70s.

Let's use one of best mobility GPU for 14 to 15 inch laptops as reference.

TSMC 40 nm ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 consumes around 15 to 19 watts(fits within MXMII spec). It's 400 shaders processes 400 32bit data per cycle i.e. 5 instructions/5 data payload format x 80 pipelines config.

TSMC 55 nm ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 consumes around 15 to 25 watts(fits within MXMII spec). It's 320 shaders processes 320 32bit data per cycle i.e. 5 instructions/5 data payload format x 64 pipelines config. Can run Mass Effect 2(UE3) to 1600x900p and max details (e.g. my laptop). PS this GPU core was renamed to Mobility Radeon HD 5165 and Mobility Radeon HD 560V (with gimped external bus) i.e. followed NVIDIA's rename game.

TSMC 65nm ATI Xenos (Xbox 360) 48 pipelines processes 240 32bit data per cycle i.e. has 2 instructions/5 data payload format x 48 pipelines. ATI Xenos runs Mass Effect 2(UE3) at 1280x720p.

All 3 GPUs are limited/gimped to 8 ROPs.

It would be a bold claim for 3DS to rival ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (13 to 15 watts).

Nintendo 3DS, a system so powerful, only Chuck Norris can handle it.

It's not going to cost that much. Definitely less then $200. I'm thinking $199 or $179. I wouldn't pay more then that for it. The PSP Go was over $250 and it's not even worth that price at all.
