Safeco is not only putting in a giant screen but a new restaurant and bringing in the walls.X360PS3AMD05
The purist in me says bringing in the walls is a total cop out. Both teams play on the same field, so what's the point?
The realist in me says it had to be done. The pitcher's-park reputation of Safeco has grown to the point where it's messing with the heads of the M's young hitters and inhibiting their development. When they step to the plate at home, they're already thinking "doesn't matter what I do, the park will screw me".
The last three years, the M's team average on the road has steadily improved from .236 in 2010 to .244 in 2011 to .247 in 2012. At the same time, the team average at home has been dropping from .235 in 2010 to .222 in 2011 to .220 in 2012. A consistent home/away difference is the sign of a pitcher's-park. A continuously worsening difference is the sign of a roster that's screwed mentally.
I don't like it, but it had to be done.
