I'm curious to what, if any, retro consoles you don't feel stand up anymore. This is not to hate on a console or put down others that enjoy it. I'm more curious to where you draw the line on what you enjoy.

I first played the Atari 2600 and then got the NES. I still love my NES but I can't get into Atari games. I just can't get immersed into Atari games anymore. The gameplay and graphics don't do it for me. It's kind of sad because I know I used to enjoy it and spent hours upon hours playing it. But not even nostalgia keeps me interested.

Anyone else feel like this or am I slowly becoming a cranky old man?

@DeerhunterIA: I agree for the most part. There are a few that are still playable, but most 2600 games are sluggish and choppy. Even a lot of NES games don't hold up, but it's a smaller portion.

I actually don't care for anything before the 16-bit era any more. It's not just that the sprites were so much more awesome in the 16-bit era, but the games tended to have more meat on them, better developed mechanics, and more inputs. Just an all-around more mature era

@xantufrog: I feel the same, because aside from Mega Man and Super Mario, I don't really play third gen games anymore unless they're the arcade versions of Space Harrier and such. 4th gen games are a lot better, and feel more "complete" if that makes any sense.

2nd gen games, I can enjoy, but I don't go out of my way to play them either.

PS2, I don't think the games have aged well and I really don't like the DS2.

I don’t like the N64 anymore. I feel as if they should release an N64 mini.

I can go back and play pretty much anything. If it's fun, I'm in.

I like pretty much every system still, but I don't enjoy playing a lot of N64 games as much as I used to. I still have very fond memories of the games I used to play on it, but it's not as fun to play them now as it used to be.

I can go back and play all of the retro consoles that I ever owned and still find at least a few games that are still fun on them.

I used to be able to go back to SNES no problem, but now I find it difficult getting back into PS1 and N64 games.

I can go back and play games on almost any console, there's still a ton of great 2600 games that hold up today. So no, there's no retro console (that I own at least) that I don't enjoy.

NES. It turns out that the SNES is the farthest back I can go.

The N64 and the Dreamcast. Poor performance and shoddy controller on Nintendo's part. Short library of meaningful titles on SEGA's. Fortunately, I can play what I used to enjoy about these two on the 3DS and on PC, but there's no replacing the Playstation line and its games.

That's not true. The Atari 2600's heyday was before I was even born, but games like River Raid and Kaboom (played with paddle controller) are still very fun and addicting.

N64 only due to a lack of a second analogue stick. I can't handle looking around with a left stick anymore than I can handle camera control using buttons. The 2600 just because the games are too bland, even as a kid in the early 80's, I didn't think the games were all that, I certainly didn't sit around and play the 2600 for hours on end or anything, usually 20 minutes here and there if they were the good games which a few of them I can still play with any attention span like Demon Attack and other shooters but games like Pitfall or Adventure?..can't do it. Then there were the huge plethora of utter trash games like Firefighter or 3D Tic Tac Toe. I still enjoy looking at the game box artwork though, often more enjoyable than the games themselves.

If it's older than the NES I just can't do it. If I had to choose between owning an original Atari or nothing I just wouldn't game at all.

While I still play Atari, there's one huge gameplay element that is largely missing - no, not graphics, but cooperative play. It just wasn't a concept in those days. I guess you can kind of play Superman and Space Invaders that way (maybe even Riddle of the Sphinx - oh joy, I want to play the black box!) but it's pretty lame. Since I'm a huge co-op player now, the ol' 2600 just doesn't hold my attention the way it used to.

I feel popping in a 2600 game is fun in spurts, and any quick jump in, and play game from the 8-16bit era is enjoyable.

Honestly...the early 3D games from Sega Saturn,PS1, and N64 are hard for me to enjoy.

It's not really a fair answer as i've never enjoyed them, but anything from second-gen does nothing for me. It's primitive yet striving to be more, i get that it's where console gaming as we know it came from. But i consider it puberty for the industry: A phase that it had to go through but one we wouldn't want to go back to. Even older machines whose entire libraries were tiny variations on bat and ball games i find still to be amusing in small doses because they're not trying to be more. But second-gen systems just look and play badly to me and there's nothing on them that i derive any enjoyment from.

The N64, Sega Saturn, Gameboy Colour, and GBA. Something about this timeframe of gaming just makes it hard to revisit. They tried too hard to make games that they weren’t ready to make and failed at almost every attempt. This is coming from someone who can revisit the Atari 2600 and enjoy myself. For the most part Atari made simple games where gameplay was the focus. There were some stinkers, but the early games were great fun and multiplayer was a focus.

This. I find it hard, very hard, to play most NES and Master System games. Very few remain enjoyable. Super Mario Bros. 3 is still great, and some Disney games are really fun to play (such as DuckTales and Chip N' Dale for NES, and Castle of Illusion and Lucky Dime Caper for Master System). But most of them I cannot play anymore, as they have not aged particularly well.
