Bernie campaign slams Warren as candidate of the elite.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The nonaggression pact between Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren is seriously fraying.

Sanders’ campaign has begun stealthily attacking Warren as a candidate of the upper crust who could not expand the Democratic base in a general election, according to talking points his campaign is using to sway voters and obtained by POLITICO.

The script instructs Sanders volunteers to tell voters leaning toward the Massachusetts senator that the “people who support her are highly-educated, more affluent people who are going to show up and vote Democratic no matter what” and that “she's bringing no new bases into the Democratic Party.”

“I like Elizabeth Warren. [optional]” the script begins. “In fact, she’s my second choice. But here’s my concern about her.” It then pivots to the criticisms of Warren.

The Sanders campaign did not challenge the authenticity of the script, but it declined to comment. The Warren campaign also declined to comment.

It is unclear whether the script is being used for phone calls or door knocking or both, or in which locations.

The document also instructs to tell voters who are favorable toward Pete Buttigieg that he lacks support among African Americans and young people and to tell voters sympathetic to former Vice President Joe Biden that “he doesn’t really have any volunteers” and that “no one is really excited about him.” All of the attacks relate to the electability of Sanders' top rivals.

The campaign script signals a break from the predominantly positive tone Warren and Sanders have adopted throughout the campaign. While Sanders has been critical of other Democratic rivals, particularly Biden, he and Warren, longtime friends, have largely abstained from attacking one another despite regular prodding from reporters.

But with voting now just weeks away, the competition between the two is intensifying. The marquee Iowa Poll released Friday had Sanders in first at 20 percent, with Warren trailing narrowly behind in second place at 17 percent.

“We were told never to go negative or contrast with other candidates,” a person close to Sanders’ campaign told POLITICO. “Bernie would let us know when it was O.K.. So if that’s happening, he’s aware.”

At a campaign appearance Sunday, Warren responded that she was “disappointed to hear that Bernie is sending his volunteers out to trash me."

“We all saw the impact of the factionalism in 2016, and we can’t have a repeat of that,” she said.

“I hope Bernie reconsiders and turns his campaign in a different direction.”

The quasitruce between the two has had moments of friction but has largely held. Last summer, some Sanders aides tweeted criticisms of Warren’s positions on "Medicare for All," of her for not going on Fox News, and more.

The Warren campaign did not respond publicly. But senior Warren adviser Dan Geldon privately communicated with Sanders’ campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, in an attempt to stop the tweets, according to an official familiar with the conversation.

The number of critical tweets did decline, but some Sanders aides, including policy adviser Warren Gunnels, have continued to occasionally jab at her.

The Sanders script is a sign that the Sanders campaign is starting to go after all the candidates more aggressively, not just Warren. When volunteers encounter voters leaning in favor of Biden, they’re told to respond that there is no enthusiasm for the former vice president and that Trump would “clobber him on his Iraq war vote, for instance, and his support for free trade agreements. That's exactly what Trump did with Hillary and it's part of why Hillary lost,” according to the script.

“Joe Biden would crush Donald Trump in a general election,” Biden spokesman Andrew Bates said. “There’s no constituency in our party waiting to simply reward whomever attacks other Democrats the most — especially not during the most high stakes election of our lifetimes.”

Buttigieg spokesman Chris Meagher said the former mayor “is offering leadership that will turn the page on the exhausting division and dysfunction coming out of Washington.”

Sanders has been stressing that he is the candidate best positioned to defeat President Donald Trump. At three stops during a swing through Iowa this weekend — his first trip there since the Des Moines Register poll was released — Sanders stressed his electability and previewed how he would run against Trump. He also seized on Trump and his campaign’s comments about Sanders in recent days, which came after months of the president’s team largely ignoring Sanders.

“The truth is that Trump understands that we can beat him because in the last few days, if you have heard what he is saying, what the Republican Party is saying, they understand that we are their threat,” Sanders said at a coffee shop in North Liberty. “For once, they got it right! I go to admit.”

The Sanders script also makes an electability argument with voters who may be concerned about his left-wing views.

“Status quo candidates lose,” the script reads. “Every candidate — both Democratic and Republican — who has run as the safe bet for the past two decades has lost.” It goes on to note that Al Gore, John Kerry, Mitt Romney, and John McCain all failed to win the White House. “Every single one.”

“We all saw the impact of the factionalism in 2016, and we can’t have a repeat of that,” she said in a jab at Sanders' campaign.

Well, we are finally getting close on people actually casting votes and the race is getting hot. Sanders has been going after Biden on his war record and now is going after Warren. He sees he is within striking distance and is gonna go for it. The Establishment must be panicking.

Is Bernie Sanders the best Democratic candidate to beat Trump in the general election?

Yeah, well, I'm disappointed in her backtracking on medicare for all. Also, this is an election so of course candidates are going to try to win against each other. I said the same thing during the 2012 election when republicans were getting upset at candidates going after each other rather than just Obama all the time.

It didn't help in the 2016 election. Sure you want to win but you have to keep the base for the eventual winner. Should just debate the programs they want and let voters decide.

Beating the Republicans is more important than who beats the Republicans.

Ordinarily I would be ashamed to say that because I feel we should vote with our ideals in mind, but not this time.

I would be happy with Sanders but frankly the guy stole a lot of votes (or rather, his supporters decided to vote third party instead of democrat) when he didn't make it last time.

Anyway, I think the democrats need to have eachother's backs. They can debate the policies, ideals, and so forth but stop the mud-slinging.

Biden is probably going to get the ticket as things stand right now. I think he's going to be the one going up against Trump in November.

@mrbojangles25: I'm personally fine with supporting Biden if he wins the nomination, but can Biden supporters say the same about Bernie or Warren? I certainly hope so.

I am probably totally wrong here, but I feel Biden supporters are likely more level-headed and realistic than Warren and Bernie supporters, and would therefore support a democratic candidate no matter what.

I think it is the Bernie and Warren supporters that would be more likely to spite the democrats if they did not get their candidate of choice. Every young voter that I know personally that supported Bernie went and voted for Jill Stein (or wrote in Bernie) during the last election; I know that's anecdotal evidence, but there you have it. They did not vote for Clinton.

For me personally, I will not let idealism be more important than pragmatism once the general election hits, but I expect the same from other people as well. I will vote for Biden, or Buttigieg or less traditional candidates like Yang if they end up winning the nomination, but I get the sense that those who support Biden will just choose not to show up and vote if he isn't the candidate who ends up going against Trump as opposed to voting third party.

Sanders vehemently denies the story, which came from four anonymous sources close to Warren. The Warren campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Just so everyone is on the same page, it seems it is Warren's camp who put the "Bernie said women can't win" story out. Gloves are off.

Trump was gloating just a few days ago that a bombshell would drop in reference to Bernie surging in the polls. He must have known this was going to happen.

I'd prefer they stay positive, but feel like these "attacks" are pretty tame. Remember the Republican primaries?

Yeah, it isn't nuclear just more animated than it has been so far outside of the Harris/Biden confrontation.

Sanders is pretty much the only democratic candidate that I won't vote for. Won't vote Trump, just won't vote Sanders either.

History has sort of proven him correct. Of course then again Hillary got 3 million more votes than Trump, so maybe not?

This registered as bullshit the moment I heard it. Seems like the exact type of trivial thing Warren would lie about.

Maybe, maybe not. I just think we should be idealistic when we vote. Ask for too much, because you know we won't get it.

Bernie really should have just owned up to this. He didn't really do anything wrong, anyway. Just say that he doesn't believe Elizabeth Warren can win the general election because America as a whole is too misogynistic. Warren is very believable and denial isn't a good look for him.

I voted for Bernie because he is a honest sweet man. It’s a shame the way the DNC does him. That being said socialism doesn’t work as good as our current system.

Hell President Obama even said we don’t need to fundamentally change the system.

I would vote him again but I am a republican now so I get no say in the primary

Well, Obama did endorse Warren unofficially, so it's no wonder that the propaganda machine is now going all out in trying to discredit Sanders. With Warren going back on her healthcare views, you can bet your ass that she would just go full Obama if elected, that is, she would not do anything she has been promising to do - that's why the corporate dems are comfortable in supporting her.
