McALLEN, TEXAS —

Democratic Maine U.S. Senate candidate Zak Ringelstein was arrested outside a detention center in McAllen, Texas, his campaign said Friday.

Ringelstein, 31, of Yarmouth, was attempting to deliver food and supplies to the camp, which houses migrant children, his campaign said.

A video of the incident, which was shared on his campaign Facebook page, shows Ringelstein driving to the camp and being told to leave several times. He is then placed in handcuffs and arrested.

The campaign did not know what charges Ringelstein would face.

Ringelstein is running for U.S. Senate against independent Sen. Angus King and State Sen. Eric Brakey, who is running as a Republican.

Oh my god! They literally arrested political opposition. This is bad.

Is that the same one that currently has a case pending regarding accusations of drugging children?

Not sure what charges that would warrant but this country is moving a little bit too authoritarian lately..........

Unless his name is Donald Trump, right? God forbid we do something that makes the kids more comfortable (what good it does) after being treated like ass.

Stop using "the law" to justify injustices.

So do you have the idea that these kids should not have any kind of security and be under the protection of the state? Not even a summer-camp would allow some random guy to drive up and stand outside a white van and hand out "candy"

If this politician wanted to give out food and other supplies, he as a democratic politician has plenty of ways to secure through official channels so that he could come there and be shown around.

Clearly, this is a campaign manager who thought it would give him an edge in the polls if he just showed up and was arrested because of him breaking the law and also gaining unlawful entry on a government facility.

If this guy wanted to make a difference, he'd win the election he is running in and go from there.

Sorry, as much as I want to admire this person's actions, it just screams of impulsive behavior and political showmanship.

I don't know, man, this is a democrat from Maine showing up in Republican, anti-immigrant Texas. I don't think they'd make it easy for him to come in and look around.

I mean he is not even a real politician yet haha, he is a candidate.

So you are of that opinion that a politician would be able to go where ever they want?

Again this is a centre for holding kids in care until their parents have been processed before a court, meaning that the state is responsible for their safety.

I'm of the opinion that I need to see an exact law broken before anyone should get arrested. Are you the Gestapo?

Another politician using these children for their political gain. Sounds like they gave him several chances to leave before having to arrest him.

Anybody that looks at this objectively and not with bias can tell this was, for the most part, a political stunt. There are so many other legal avenues he could have taken to get that stuff to them without grandstanding his way to an arrest he will put footage of in his next campaign ad.
