Also, some PS3 games only play at 720p resolution - this is the devs work, not PS3's fault. Look in the bakc of the game box - it lists the resolution for that game.YourDaddy88OK. I'm using HDMI cables. I thought the PS3 could upscale all games. This was added to the 360 through an update. Even launch games like PGR3 and Condemned can be upscaled. Is 1080p upscaling going to be added to the PS3 in a future update?
Your tv is upscaling the picture to 1080p so how much can it really matter?????Your tv says that it is receiving a 720p signal, but it is displaying a 1080p - you just moved the converting from the PS3 to the tv.....svenskamerikan
No, it doesn't work like that. My TV is 1080p. I set it to 1080p, the xmb is in 1080p. I pop in Resistance or Folklore, the screen flashes, and resets itself to 720p.

Technically he is right. Its 720p from the ps3, but its taking up 1080p on your tv screen. But tv upscalers tend to be worse than ones inside the game system itself.

That's the PS3 re-scaling to the game's resolution. Don't sweat it, most 1st gen games were in 720p but more and more new ones are in 1080. Honestly, your eye won't even be able to tell a difference. Worry more about the framerates.
The PS3's internal scaler isn't nearly as useful as the 360's. THe 360's chip allows everything to be upscaled, the PS3...not so much. I'm afraid that due to hardware limitations you will be playing your games in their native resolution. Unfortunately, for the most part that is 720p.TheSystemLord1this guy is right, it's more the hardware, i think in some cases the PS3 is scaling VIA software emulation and 1080p just doesnt look good at all, if you wanna try some of the new games out in 1080p(ratchet, uncharted, unreal tournament, assassins creed and cod4) just uncheck 720p in the display settings and the game plays in 1080p), having said that i've tried it and I must say 720p looks alot better, the ps3 does a good job scaling dvd's and heck even ps2 games, but not so much with ps3 games.
All the new games seem to be able to do it. Sony added in upscaling options for devs in one of the older firmware (around 1.8 I think) updates. Its not retroactive though, it has to be programmed in. To upscale those games that support it, you have to uncheck the other resolutions in video settings. This can potentially screw up your games that don't support it thogh, causing them to drop down to 480p.mbrockwaySo if I do this with Uncharted or R&C it will be upscaled to 1080p?

It doesn't work. The resolutions listed are 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The only one I unchecked was 720p and the game displayed at 567p. Obviously this is proof the PS3 does not upscale past the games native resolution of 720p. This must be why it looks worse when you do it. It is 576p you're looking at or 480p if you're in America. Press the info button on your remote while the game is loaded and you will see the resolution being used. x-2tha-zi dont know what to tell you, it works for me, i would notice if a game downscaled to 480p cause the game wouldnt be full widescreen anymore, i own a 1080p samsung as well, try unchecking everything except 1080p and then try it or try another game.

nothing, the game doesnt support 1080p
dstryr13
It does support 1080p (and 1080i for that matter) through upscaling, along with Assassin's Creed, Ratchet and Clank, CoD4, and Warhawk. I'm probably missing a few, but those are the ones that come to mind. I tried this out myself, I own them, they do upscale.

It DOES work like I said. Your tv showing 720p is only a statementof what it is being feed - 720p. It is NOT what it is displaying. It is displaying 1080p since your tv is made to upconvert to 1080p. When you see the xmb it shows 1080p as that is what it receives and then it doesn't upconvert it just passes through the signal. Now as someone pointed out some tv's are better at this than others. However, it does give some reason to why Sony wouldn't spend a bunch of money putting in technology that is in everyone's tv (if they have 1080p)... Separately as also stated - it is an issue of developers making the game right.
Since nobody did in the beginning Sony should probably take most of the blame for not educating developers properly / early enough... (I do seem to remember that upconverting directions came out AFTER the PS3 ie way late in the development cycle).

yes but it is forced, meaning you have to only check 1080p
if he has them all checked then it will play at its reg res as that is what it is optimized for
