I'd say 16gb would be recommended and 8gb at the least.

Thanks. How many downloaded games can a 16g hold and for 8g? For saving progress, does it take a lot of space?

Saving doesn't take much space, a few kb at most. The download size varies from game to game. There is no definitive answer for that. Gamestop.com advertises the 16gb as being able to hold 4-8 Vita games (keep in mind that most PSP games are much smaller than Vita games).

The save file concept doesn't make sense to me... why not just have games save to the game card? They're not UMDs anymore, they could potentially be written onto no??

8GB minimum. A 4GB card is pretty much useless, unless you're only going to use it for game saves.

I got a great deal on Amazon for a 16 GB card for just $40. I have 4 full Vita games and 2 PSP games on it right now with almost 5 GB still free.

You are correct, this can be (and has been) done. A couple games I heard has utilized the game cartridge for saves, but that's few and far between.

I actually like it better when games save to a memory card rather than the game itself. When it saves to the game, if you decide to get rid of those games, you need to place each and every single game into your system and delete the save data. And some of those games are harder to figure out how to erase the saved data for than others.

^ meh. I wouldn't even bother... It's not like it's sensitive information or anything. I just wonder how save files on cards correlate with trophies...
