..when the ps2 dies out in a year or two? I really want to play ps2 games on mine. And I think it will be a smart move for sony, because not only will it drive more ps2 game sells, but more systems as well.

I bought my 80GB PS3 one year after launch and I'mable to play PS1 and PS2 games. When did they discontinue the BC? if anything I'd buy a slim PS2 if my PS3 couldn't play PS1 or PS2 games.

High chances, it's just a matter of when the PS2 starts to slow down and Sony decides to end it's lifecycle. Then they can put PS2 emulation in the PS3's via FW update without worrying about it hurting their PS2 sales. Though it would spur PS3 sales anyways so yeah, there's no downside. They'll come around eventually.

id say none until they stop producing the ps2. the last thing theyd want to do is add to the ps3's price at a time when the cost of their product is so uncompetitive relative to the other consoles.

Hahaha I don't mind if they put it back for people that want to buy the Playstation 3 but personally ... I never played any Playstation 2 games since I have my Playstation 3 .. so I wouldn't use that feature ... but I do want to have voice chat over game :p I played Killzone 2 and we can't talk with friends in menu and everywhere just like in Resistance 2 :( I always loved Resistance 2 for that , always play with friends and all !! and to come back at the thread ... there's high chance they put back BC in news Playstation 3 or through software emulation by Digital content

i thought it couldn't be updated through firmware because of hardware limitations. the PS2 uses a different laser to read the disc, it's a fatter laser than PS1 and PS3 games use. that's why all nonbackwards compatible PS3 can still play PS1 games. The PS3's that have backwards compatibility with PS2 games have two laser heads inside of them. i'm pretty sure i remember reading this from a reliable source, i'd try to find it but it's 4:30 am here and i'm about to try to sleep before i restart the day.
