the 80gb plays approximately 76% of the ps2 games

the part of sony that makes hardware is not the part of sony that oversees software development, so its not an issue.

they'd have just as many games if there were only one ps3 as they do with 3.

furthermore, the 80GB was made to decrease production cost and reduce losses.

No, there is no 80GB SKU here in Australia, and Sony have said there will not be, only the 60GB for us.

No. I have the 80 GB PS3 (along w/ the Xbox 360 & Wii) and it plays the PS2 games fine. I have one thing to say: Everyone out there says that the Xbox 360 is the best. Well, I own all 3 (between my brother and me) and I have to say that our favorite is the PS3. It just seems more organized than the 360 and a bit sharper picture, not to mention the controller is light and wireless. The Wii was cheap yes, but once you realize that just about every game on the system is mini games with a lil bit of a twist, you become... uninterested.HicktownMayor

The 80GB PS3 is not 100% backwards compatible but it beats the competition's BC anyway.

i'm not involved in the corporate structure of Sony but I'm pretty sure the division responsible for hardware production is not the division responsible for the creation of games

different division, different budgets
