RUMOR: PS3 redesign at E3

Of course this is just yet another rumor, as there is no official confirmation. But we caught word that Sony is set to not only reveal the PSP Go at E3, but another hardware redesign will be debuted as well.

We didn't get any specifics, but we speculate that it could be one of a couple different options. First off, it very well could be as simple as a white or a silver PS3, to go with the white and silver Dualshock 3's that have been made available. This makes sense, as most people would want their controllers to match their consoles.

The other option, and the one we are leaning toward is a slimmed down, model. Maybe with some updated specs. Nothing major of course as to not alienate current PS3 owners, but there is an off chance they could add something small like bluetooth 3.0 support. When we caught wind of this, the exact word "redesign" was used, which leaves me to believe that it is indeed a PS3 slim. Announcing a different color wouldn't exactly warrant the term "redesign".

Then again, since a console wasn't specified either, it could be a redesigned PS2, or yet another PSP model (other than the Go) but that is highly unlikely. There is also an off chance that this "hardware redesign" was referring to a PS3 Motion controller, but I really don't consider that to be "hardware", as it's more of an accessory.

Sony has been known to slim down their consoles, as the original PlayStation, PS2, and even the PSP all have seen slimmer models released after the initial model was released. Is the market ready for a PS3 slim? I know I am.

I don't see them releasing any kind of redesigned PS3, at least not this year.

Sorry to burst your bubble but this is old new and not even going to happen anytime soon. That picture was created using the top part of the PS3 mixed in with the Wii or that's what I saw the last time this "rumor" was spread. And the reason it won't happen anytime soon is because they'd either have to redesign the internal structure for it and find smaller parts to manufacture.

a redesign could work right now.. with the games out and coming out in the next couple months, this and possibly a price drop could really get the ps3 moving.. i know i would buy one.

oh i am just saying they "could".. not saying they will or should..

I doubt they would do a PS3 redesign right now, maybe in 2 years or so.

Unless they can save money on a new design, than it wouldn't surprise me.

Well I think we have to wait and see. For now, it's just a rumor.

i care more about a price drop than a new modelreaver-x

the theory is that a rice drop will go hand in had with this newer model. recently the cell chip and the (horribly out of date) RSX chip have been shrunk quite significantly. Recently newer manufacturing processes have allowed the chipset to get small and use less power, so if they make a smaller console, moeny can be sa ved all-round. A smaller console=smaller box, which equals the fact that a shipping container will now hold MORE consoles, which gets MORE consoles on shelf by Christmas. Remeber, with this "recession", console sales are down. redesigning is the best way to get consumers excited.

Don't be surpised if Msoft do this as well. the x360 chip and the (almost as horribly out of date)ATi graphics chip have been shrinking in size steadily over the last few years since the overheating fiasco. remember, u can spend $50US/$100AU to get a grahics chip for ur PC that is technically more powerful then the stuff in the current gen consoles (here's looking at u sexy ATi HD 4670 512mb)

well, if sony wants to bring a redesign of the PS3 to the table. I would expect to get a brand spanking new one if something ever happens to my system, which is one of the original designs.

Honestly, they really would alienate a lot of ps3 users who have the original design. Especially with the amount of money everyone had to drop to pick one up. Stupid move by sony if that is the case.

Even though the cost of the PS3's parts are lowering in time, Sony is still losing money on each console they pump out.

They're not going to redesign and reprogram the manufacturing machines at production warehouses for a new design PS3.

It's not worth their money to do so.

Well thinking about the slimmed down PS3, while that would revitalize the want for the PS3, I dont think itll happen. I dont believe sony has the emulation software completed yet. It just doesnt seem like the time sony will be releasing a slimmed PS3 (although it would be neat). However in reference to the white and possibly gray PS3, i dont see a reason why not. I wanted a white PS3 for so long, if they had launched with it I would have bought my PS3 much sooner. Heck i might even sell my 80gb ps3 to get a white one.

I believe if this "redesign" has anything to do with the PS3 at all it will simply be a cheaper version. It may be slilmmed down and stripped of some of its more luxurious features basically to play games and nothing else, but it will be cheap enough for casual and family gamers to afford. That's just my guess. We all know one major reason the PS3 isn't doing as well as the other consoles is its hefty price tag. And Sony's sale price relies very heavily on manufacturing costs. So, if they can find a way to get a PS3 out there on the cheap they can sell it on the cheap and get it into more homes. It would actually be a wise move if you ask me. I could see PS3 sales doubling if not more. That's just my theory. I should get a job as one of those video game business analysts. :)

Of course, I'm sure they'd continue to manufacture the bad boys we all have currently sitting in our living rooms. I just think thay'd add this cheaper version to the roster for people who are.... cheap. They can call it the PS3 Lite. lol

Even if this is true and Sony comes out with some spectacular redesign, I won't be forking up my 60GB and loosing BC.
