So here's my complaint: I have an enormous and very fantastic monitor (Samsung 2493HM) that even has an HDMI input. For some inexplicable reason, most monitors can't accept a 16:9 ratio (what the PS3 outputs and what all HDTV's use) without stretching it to fit 16:10. Now lets get this straight, almost 100% of monitors are 16:10 and 100% of 1080p tvs are 16:9 meaning this problem is very common for the large portion of PS3 users who have monitors for their higher contrast ratios and better clarity/dual purpose.

Thus, I BEG Sony to please upgrade the firmware to support a native 16:10, and or give the user the option to manually adjust the hight and width of the image output by the PS3. So a bunch of people have **** in response to my request saying, 16:10 isn't a broadcast ratio blahlahhhhhh, well guess what folks:

The new XBOX360 dash or whatever they call it will support 16:10 giving them a huge leg up as far as versatility. Does anyone else here play using their monitor and have the same issues?

Well seeing how Sony isn't really doing anything about mandatory 1080i support for games, I can't see them addressing this issue. The problem with the PS3 is that it does not have a scaling chip in it, like the 360, and that is why it is up to the devs to add the supported resolutions. All 360 games can support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p and that is from a conscious effort by Microsoft to have the hardware do that, not leave it to a per game basis like Sony.

What NEEDS to happen is that people NEED to STOP supporting this ridiculous aspect ratio so it can go away and we can get some standardization around this mess.

amen. problem is, many people don't know what ratio they have, and the problem with that, lol, is that they don't care.

but if sony could create an update to accommodate those with the 16:10 apsect ratio, i don't see why sony wouldn't do so if they were pressured a litle bit.

It would take a lot more than one guy with a picket sign though :P

I also have this exact same Samsung monitor. I think it's great, but the solution is not with Sony but with Samsung.

Its made to be played on a 16:9 tv not a monitor. Monitors are just for secondary use.

If you would like to see an OPTIONAL funtion adding 2 black bars in order to support 16:10 monitors on the PS3, please sign this petition:

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/ps31610support/

NOTE: This solution would NOT alter the actual game/movie 16:9 signal, but simply allow to choose adding two black bars to it.

this. Also for the price of that monitor you could have bought a 16.9 HDTV. A 24" desktop monitor probably fries your eyes if you sit behind a regular pc desk with your nose in front of that monitor.

I agree.

16:10 is a man's resolution, anyhow.

Wow, OLD THREAD.
