Hello everyone,

This question might be already been asked but I will try to ask it anyways. I am looking to buy a PS3 in the upcoming weeks and I put aside a PS3 60GB at WalMart. But I wanted to ask if there was a big difference in the hardware of the PS3. Like if they fixed some heat issues, problems on the older versions of their consoles...etc.

I know that they removed the Emotion Chip in the console, but how much games will be compatible with the software emulation. I was reading a lot of article but none of them actually said how much games are compatible. My goal, is to get rid of PS2 in my room and relocate it to another spot. Like the games I'm using right now are DDR:Supernova, FFXII and God of War. Obviously FFXII and GoW will work since they are the big titles. I know that you need the adaptor for DDR to emulate the "Press the PS Button" when you play the game (Also creating a PS2 port by USB).

So this is my big question, on which console version I will buy. The amount of space is not an issue. I will be upgrading my HDD to 250GB anyways with a Laptop SATA hard drive.

Thanks for your support!

Hmmm...the onyl changes that I've heard about are the size of the drive and no EE, but you already know that.

Both consoles are IDENTICAL except the 80 GB doesn't have the EE chip and it includes MotorStorm. You should be fine with the 60 GB. The 80 GB plays around 70-75% (I think, not quiet sure but its around there) PS2 games. Like I said, go with the 60 GB which plays around 98% of PS2 games.

Go with the 60gb, it has the EE and besides that there are no differences, so you'll save yourself a couple of bucks.

that should help you find out if the software will be good enough to play all your games...and they can always update it so maybe someday the game that doesnt work will work.

Ah very nice link, very useful.

Something just came back into my mind. They say Sony removed the EE Chip because it was causing some issues with the PS3. But I guess the main reason they removed the EE chip was the prodcution cost. These were the two reason why they removed it. I wonder if that EE chip caused any issues.

The 60 gig version is a better value because of the EE chip. But the only reason for the memory card reader is if you save things for the PS2 because there is a virtual memory card from the PSN store that imulates a memory card onto the HDD. You have to go to the PSN store to get the virtual memory firmware.

60gb comes with EE and 80gb comes with motor storm and a emulator instead of EE (which really means if you don't have super crappy PS2 and PS1 that nobodys heard about you should be fine) ......neither have heating issues (you must be mixed up with the 360).........so really the only difference between the 2 versions are that one uses EE and the other uses emulation

I really don't care about the game since here in Canada the console cost me 553.47$ CAD Tax and Discount (10%) included while the 80GB would cost me 659.99$ + Tax - 10% Discount ;). So really I don't care if I don't get Motorstorm right now.

About that memory card, I know you can buy an adaptor that lets you use your Memory card from PSone and PS2, then you copy then over on a virtual memory card that you create through the utility in the PS3. What your telling is I have to buy something to let me do that?

Personally after thinking about it I say the software emulation is better because it has a potential to support more games...I know there was a few that didn't work with EE chip. Also its cheaper to produce so I could see a cheaper ps3 soon.

EDIT: and you are very welcome to you both :)

The virtual memory software is a free download from the PSN store. The memory card adapter is usually less than $15.00 (if you don't need it for another system it's really not needed) I have one and never use the thing.

I would go for the 60GB also.

Also if you are considering the 60GB, you better not waste too much time, because once they are gone, they are gone.

The 60gb has superior hardware to the 80gb system in that the 60gb gives you the hardware backward compatibility (EE chip) and the 80gb doesn't.

You can always upgrade the hard drive to a bigger size no problem - so I would say definitely get the 60gb system.

In fact you can get a 160gb (5400) hard drive for $100 - so you should buy the 60gb version ($499) with better backward compatability and save the $100 the 80gb ($599) would cost you - or you could spend that extra $100 on a 160gb drive and for the same price as the 80gb system - you'd have twice the storage capacity.

No matter how you look at it - the 60gb unit is the route to go.

:)

Software IS NOT better - they have to specifically code each game they want it to work with for it. They won't waist much time on it - so not many games at all will work. Same issue with the 360 - HARDWARE>SOFTWARE - always.

Hey thanks for all those infos. I knew you can change the hard drive, there is in fact a guide right here on gamespot on how to do it. That is in my plans, the only thing I was looking for is if they had changed anything in the components not including the EE chip.

So hardware will be better... It makes sense since it's the PS2 GPU and CPU, so if they don't work on the EE chip there is a big problem right ?:P

Doesn't have the EE in 60GB in UK,so when 80Gb hits these shores, the only difference will be in HD size.

It comes with Motorstorm aswell, I think Motorstorm is standard in every 80GB package. Besides you have a "starter pack" in UK with 2 Controllers + 2 Games (Resistance + Motorstorm), but this SKU is getting discountinued....

I disagree unless you have a really rare game...most games work though and there is some that don't even work with a EE chip. With software there is a potential to be better but I sort of agree with you there that they probably won't spend much time on it unless a lot of people really complain then they will.

EDIT: but I even checked legend of mana which was impossible for me to find and they fixed all the issues.
