hey i was wondering.....

with PS2 you had the different formats namely ***, PAL, and NTSC....and of course you could only play the one or the other depending on where you are and where you bought your ps2, and same goes for the games!

i was wondering(again) is this still present in PS3?? Can i buy games and a PS3 say in US and be able to play it in Europe??

Thanks!

As long as your TV can handle NTSC + PAL + HD 50 Hz + HD 60 Hz you will have no issues playing PS3 games from any region.

Good answer. I can add some info on that. If you have a HDTV then PAL, NTSC wont matter since its the same resolution for games.

The only thing that restricts you from playing games from other regions is region protection which btw the PS3 games doesnt have. So you can import games just fine if you have a HDTV.

As I mention above you need a TV that supports HD at 50 and 60 Hz. There are differences in PAL / NTSC regions with HD.

I went to play a version of the simpsons movie that was PAL on my PS3 and got the message saying the system could not read the pal format. My one standalone dvd player wouldn't read it either but a DVD recorder i had would play it fine.

Will the North American PS3 not play PAL dvd's?

Only PS3 games are region free. There are some multi region/region free Blu-ray movies. You can find a list of them at http://bluray.liesinc.net/. I'm sure there are some region free DVD movies but I haven't looked for a site that lists them, try Google.

No, ps3 games are not region encoded, but movies, including blu-rays, are.

this is good to hear, cause im in the US for december, and i might think about buying a PS3 seeing that its a tad cheaper, and obviously some games!

So i can actually do that now and play it where i am!:D I remember NTSC games of old running on a PAL PS2 system used to flicker and skip and sometime woudnt even display an image, so i was kinda afraid of that with PS3...

A few people have mentioned that your TV must support both NTSC and PAL but will a PS3 will be able to read both regions if I plan on pluging it onto a TV card that goes into my Computer?

Ok, so this topic is quite old. (I'm gonna bring it back with this reply. :P)

And I understand the PS3 can play PS3 games from any region because they are region free. I also understand my TV needs to be able to support the differences.

What about playing PS2 games from different regions on the PS3? In my logic you'd be able to play them, but since I don't know for sure I am asking. :)

What? Why would you think that?

Because new hardware is usually made backwards compatible with older software.

I'm pretty certain disc based PS1 and PS2 games are region locked on any PS3. Downloadable PS1 classics on the US PS Store however are not region locked from what I gather. I've heard loads of people say they have made US accounts on their PAL PS3 just to play PS1 classics in 60HZ. I don't think the same implies to downloadable PS2 classics though.

Dangit!

Well thanks :)

Since I'm not that accustomed to using a PS3; Would it be possible to download games, place the .iso file on the PS3 harddrive and play the game from there? Or would I need to burn these to a CD/DVD?

Um, no. That still doesn't explain why you would think PS2 games (which ARE region locked) would work on a PS3.

but since I don't know for sure I am asking. :)

DarkGrim88

That is why I was asking. Anyways ..

There are two different reasonings for that:

1) Either the PS3 ignores the region lock.

2) The PS3 is capable of playing any PS game because it is software/hardware encoded

But its obvious it's neither of the two.
