It will not last anywhere past 2 years.

Either Sony backsdown (not very likely) or HD losses their support from Universal and Paramount.

Before Paramount was PAID for their opinion, they said Blu-Ray was looking like the best highdef format. And why not, it's the best in sales and the standalone players are finally starting to sale with lower prices. Everyone needs to look at that deal closely, paramount would not have made it a timed exclusive if they felt HD was going to win.

Look at this way.....Warner Bros (huge major stuido) actually gets ROYALTIES for HD sales. Basically they own a stake in HD dvd. Yet they are making movies for BOTH HD and Blu-Ray. Common sense tells you they know Blu-Ray is going to win or they wouldn't be supporting it even though they will be losing money from HD royalties. Warner is all about the money from sales.....something Paramount obviously isn't.

at most id say a little more than a year. with companies like blockbuster already supporting blu-ray ... its almost really clear to see who the winner will be.

Well, now with Paramount giving exclusive support to HD except for Speilberg movies which come in both either side might win as long as one side doesn't cave in

I think its gonna last awhile. Sure blockbuster is supporting blu-ray, but then the largest retail chain in the country, Walmart, is only going to sell hd-dvd. Then you hear of people buying both, so thats only going to prolong things. I'm sitting on the fence till it no longer exists. When their is a clear winner, I'll embrace it. Till then, I can only watch and shake my head...

HD-DVD has done their last ditch effort with the pay off of Paramount. They will fold up shop most likely in late 2008 to early 2009.

as long as console wars last. (forever)

neither one will ever completely go away, but blu ray will win as more people get ps3 and they will.

HDTVs aren't even in the majority of American households. this needs to change even before a winner can be declared.

my guess: 2 years tops.

The thing is paramount prior to the exclusive deal seemed to be favoring blu ray...universal, prior to the paramount news, said that is they made multiformat releases they felt hd dvd would go under. I think in 18 months, once the exclusive deal is done if paramount starts developing blu ray again it will basically be the end of hd dvd. The only reason I feel they would not start developing for blu ray again is if warner (the only major studio still maing both) would choose hd dvd exclusively. I personally feel in that 18 months universal will start developing for blu-ray and warner will become blu-ray exclusive, meaning once those 18 months are up paramount will produce for blu-ray essentially spelling the end of hd-dvd because you will be able to get every movie on blu-ray and on limited on hd-dvd...plus the bonus of hd-dvd being the interactivity is slowly making its way over to blu-ray.

Just so you know the details of this they are only exclusive to HD-DVD for 18months. $150million from the HD-DVD camp got them that.
