Try using the power sensor/button on the front of the PS3. After doing this connect the controller and see if it will charge now (the PS3 will NOT charge the controller when it's in standby mode). The battery could be completely discharged on your controller and if so if will not work in any way.

try keeping the controller connected (via charge cable) and manually turn on your system and when the system is up & running press the ps button to see if you can get it going again...if you already tried this, idk?

good luck

also if when charged it will work with the usb cable plugged in but not wirelessly there is a small reset button recessed in a hole on the bottom of the controller just to the left of the l2 trigger if you have the controller upside down use a pin or something to reset it and you should be fine happened to my son's ps3 couple weeks ago

My DS3 was completely discharged this morning. I powered my PS3 using the button on the front. I connected my controller to the PS3 using the USB cable and pressed the PS button numerous times and nothing happened. I reset the button at the back and got 4 lights flashing, after that it was replaced with a single flash under Player 1. I used the controller to make sure it was synced and it was working. I left it to charge while the PS3 was on. Afte 5 hours, it was still blinking and the battery icon on the screen showed empty and it was not even charging (the whole time)! I used it again while connected and it was working but right after I disconnected the controller, it died! What gives? I used the USB cable in my digicam and it works and I also made sure it was connected properly when i left it...

Mine came with the 80GB MGS4 bundle. Now, I do not know if my controller's usb port is damaged or the cable.

Any input is very much appreciated..thanks! BTW, it's my first post here..

Have you tried another USB port on your PS3. The four lights will be blinking as long as the controller is charging and while the controller is syncing with the PS3 when you first turn the system on, also with this console if you play a PS2 game in it the controller will shut off when you start the game because the PS3 has to reconfigure the console and controller to play these games, all that's needed is press the PS button and the controller will work just fine after it synics with the PS3.

jimm895, thank you for your reply...

Never played any PS2 games but I plugged in a PS2 controller (with an adaptor of course) from time to time. switching it between P1 and P2 port (between PS2 controller and DS3). I tried all ports using the PS3 cable and my canon USb cable but no use. this time it's worse, I did not get any flashing lights at all even after reset or pressing the reset button together with the PS button! totally dead. Now, I re-checked the PS3 USB cable with my canon digicam attached to the PC and DID NOT work but with its own canon USB, no problem. After that, I also tried charging my DS3 in my PC using both USB but no flashing at all.

Was I able to isolate the problem that my PS3 USB cable is now damaged or defective? or is there any thing else i'm missing? thanks..

If you have proved the USB cable is working or you have a working USB cable then you may have a defective controller. The PC USB should charge the controller. I have used a laptop, desktop, and even a USB port on my HDTV to charge my controllers.

This happened to me about three days ago. I tired my blu-ray remote, and it wouldn't work either. I was worried it was something wrong with the bluetooth, but (luckily) it just started working again about 45 minutes later. I tired everything, inculding a manual restart and nothing worked, then it just started to work again. Very wierd. I have a launch system, FYI.

to jimm895:

What I meant was I used the PS3 USB for my digicam to download pics in the PC but DID NOT work. I then used the original digicam USB cable to download and it was no problem. So, I figured out that the PS3 cable was DEFECTIVE but when I used the digicam cable for my controller, it still doesn't do anyything, no flashing at all even after any reset!

Now I know the PS3 is not working (based on the digicam). Is it possible that the digicam of USB isn't 2.0 that's why it's not working on the DS3? or simply the controller is now defective.

Hope by tomorrow it's going to be like wenzke's case...thanks wenzke for that info btw.

I have had the PS3 80 for little over a month and tonight the controller stopped working!!!

The cable must be made of the cheapest materials around (mostly lead I'm sure).

Changed to a cable I knew was working from my computer and without hesitation the PS3 recognized the low battery controller and began charging it!!!

BOO to SONY for whimping on the cables for an extra $0.02 profit. Makes me wonder how long the system will last!?!

Oh for the days of ATARI

good for you that a new cable did the trick! I bought a new cable today as well (Intec) but alas, it's not charging, syncing or recognizing the DS3 even after a reset!!! So, it's now the DS3 that is defective!!! I used this for two months (june 12 MGS4 bundle lunch), normal not abused but it's now kaputz! yup, agreed that the cable sony bundled with this is not of good quality, guess I have to return my DS3 to the retailer (pre-ordered online from The Source) and have it replaced. Bummer!

You may have to replace the blutooth battery. Once that battery goes your controller will no longer hold a charge.
