Confirmed: 40GB PS3 hits U.S. November 2nd for $400, 80GB gets $100 Price Drop

"Jack Tretton, President of Sony Computer Entertainment has now confirmed that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 will make it's way to the U.S., releasing on Novemeber 2nd, for a retail price of $400.

If that wasn't good enough, Tretton also confirmed that the 80GB version will be getting a hundred price cut, dropping it from $600 to $500."

They'll probably just keep it at $500 since it still has the EE in it which would balance out the differences.

We have been notified that the 80GB price cut is effective immediately.

Additionally, according to Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles, the 40GB PS3 will come bundled with Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc as previously rumoured.

just checked Gamestop.com and they already have the price drop for the 80gb model, but the 60gb is staying the same. guess there is no price drop for that one.

I'm glad they are not canceling the 80gb model. Its smart to have a model with BC and one without BC. good move sony.

damn i just bought my 60gb, and then took it back after the price drop to get my $100 back, and now this :)

I'm interested to see what happens and what the sales will be like after all the 60gbs in Europe dry up because the majority of that sales spike was for the 60gb and not so much for the 40gb

granted the 60 was a better value for just 50 euros more, so cant really tell how well the 40gb did

Its not a price drop they just hacked apart a 80/60GB PS3 and stuffed it with a 40GB hard drive and took a bunch if good features and hardware out. And it doesnt even support PS2/1 hardware emulation. Its a shame Sony even put the PS3 lable on this hacked up wanan be PS3.elfboy69

Good lord! Some people are such freaking whinners! The 40gb console is a perfectly capable PS3 console, it has everything it needs to function perfectly as a "PS3" and Blu-ray player. Not a PS2, if you want that functionalilty.. buy an 80gb.

The spec of the PS3 stated that it would have support for PS2/1 games.The 60BG modle would have a multi media memory reader and the 20GB would not..Does the 40GB version have that?NO!Thus by the specs stated by Sony at the time of release the 40GB modle is not a PS3 becuase it dosent support one of the mane features that the "Real" PS3s do.

Most likely, that seems reasonable. I saw some of you saying that the 80 GB price drop was unexcepted, it was not unexcepted people knew it all along, the 60 GB's are fading and almost gone, it was a good move.

Actually I thought there was the Core/Arcade, Premium, Elite, Halo3 Edition. All with slight differences. Another stupid paragraph.

360 uses software as well, and it does a worse job than the 60gb. The readers on the PS3 were being under utilized to start with, and besides your complaining about us loosing something that you never had? meh

Well I think it's time for my 60 Gig PS3 to "break" so I can get the 80 Gig with 5 Free Blu-Ray movies, Motorstorm, 20 Gigs more of Harddrive space and possibly a $100.00 cash back. Oh this is a good day. :D
