I would say yes. I have a dvd player that is DivX certified and it plays .avis just perfect. Since Sony is after DivX certification then most likely avi support will be included.

I really don't understand why DivX support is necessary. What's the point?

Many downloadable movies are encoded with DivX. You can buy each movie for $0.00

DiVX is a very, very common codec with downloaded video on the intnernet. I have the entirety of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on my computer... all AVIs encoded with DiVX. It carries surround sound and HD, all without being terribly huge.

What I hope is that there will be Upscaling capacities with DivX, there is with mpeg4 atm hope it will be the same. That would be a huge advantage for transfering them over my ps3 instead of keeping over pc

Anybody know if it will read DIVX files from a CD/DVD/BLU-RAY.

Imagine wacking 50 Standard Def movie files on a Dual layer recordable Blu-Ray, 50 allmost DVD quality movies on a single disc, that could be pretty damn awesome.

I heard so. But we'll have to wait and see. All I care for is if it plays AVIs. That would warrant a PS3 purchase alone (I already have it of course). Imagine, having infite movies which you can watch on your big TV, all for free, all at your command.

Xvid codec can play Divx files, but not the other way around. To OP, anything can play AVI, depending on how AVi is encoded. I am uncertain about if there is a standard for Divx based disc format. If there is, possibility for PS3 to support it is high.

Hey me too!! yes iamsickofspam, they do take up alot of space somewhere right around 130 gigs for all ten regular season, the 2 ktma season and the extras. but its worth it. [:

also, not all avi's are in divx. avi is just a carrier extension avi's can be divx, xvid, and possibly some others. but adding divx would still be very nice as i have alot that is encoded in divx.

oh and to answer an earlier question, i think xvid is the open source version of divx. and i believe solaris is right, xvid will play most divx formats, but not the other way around.

The new firmware update is now out and it can now play DIVX (a.v.i format). You can either watch avi from your external format, off of a memory stick, or a dvd disc. After this new update I use my ps3 a lot more now, I watch movies and anime on it.

I've tried three .avi files so far and only one of them hasworked. Seems to be a bit hit-and-miss at the moment. :(

This is kinda cool, but with my LCD tv, I just hook my laptop directly into the tv, and I don't have to transfer any files to my PS3. I would be able to do this through PS3, but my external HD is in NTSF and not FAT32, so its not compatible with PS3.

well, if your willing to format your external HDD to fat 32 which i recommend anyways because it works fine. all you need is a freeware program called SwissKnife, it will format any size drive to fat 32.
