I have a 47 inch rear projection HDTV the ones that only support 480p and 1080i and I remember reading before on some post that the ps3 wont upscale the game to 1080i so that means im screwed and have to play 480p. My cousin told me there might be a firmware fix for this. I just wanted to know if this is true because I know resistance only goes up to 720p and I dont wanna play at 480p lol. Can anyone confirm this for me thou I dont own a ps3 but my freind just got one and it will be at my house every now and then id like to know if there really is a fix for this thanks!

I don't think Sony announced anything. Basically the idea is to go buy a new TV.

Do you have an official statement or is it just another speculation? I remember every single update to this day was said to fix that problem. Almost 6 months later and still nothing. Last I heard was that there is a sleeping upscaler chip in the PS3 waiting to be turned on.

sure they did. Playing Resistence on a 480P / 1080i TV still displays in 480P

does the ps3 have a scaler chip? if not, then you have to wait for a hardware update. see microsoft elite, new and improved, now with hdmi.rowbear

yes the ps3 has a scaler chip did you have to bring xbox elite into this so out of topic elite is a waste of money

AFAIK this scaler is just a myth. Why would a scaler exist and do nothing? Makes no sense to me.

because it forces developers to actually learn the hardware and once the scaler is unlocked developers will all of a sudden have alot more power to work with...sony is pretty much doing the same thing with the psp

Sony released a devkit to allow for upscaling. However it takes time on the part of the developers to utilize the PS3's upscaler because it isn't a 100% upscaler like the 360s is. Rather than having a chip like the 360 that'll retransmit the image in a certain resolution, the ps3 siphons the duty into two parts. With the tools sony released, devs would have to create a special resolution between 720 and 1080 in order for the upscale to properly work. For example: the new resolution would be 1920x720 and the upscaler would finish it off by making it 1920x1080. (that's just an example, not the exact way it would work but it's the basic idea behind how it works).

AFAIK this scaler is just a myth. Why would a scaler exist and do nothing? Makes no sense to me.

The PS3 was rushed. Pure and simple. Its software and firmware complement is incomplete. It has the scaler--there's an article on Beyond3D that describes the horizontal scaling functionality that Sony enabled a while ago--but Sony never finished the firmware for it, so it's partly inactive. It's like the HDMI 1.3 functionality of the PS3's HDMI port: inactive until patched in the future. You really should read about Sony's ridiculous "horizontal scaling" fix. It absolutely REEKS of being a bandaid fix. Basically, instead of automatically scaling a 1280x720 in-game frame directly to 1920x1080 for 1080p or 1080i output, game developers have to add in a feature to their game that causes the game engine to render at a wonky, horizontally squished resolution of 960x1080. Then the PS3's internal scaler scales the image horizontally, doubling the 960 vertical lines out to 1920 lines while keeping the 1080 horizontal lines unchanged. This REQUIRES the game developers to implement the 960x1080 resolution, though. It's not like the 360's scaler which automatically scales 1280x720 both vertically and horizontally to 1920x1080. The problem with this is that a 960x1080 frame has *slightly* more pixels than a 1280x720 image, so there WILL be a performance cost involved (about 15%) for games that were originally designed to run at 1280x720 but were later patched to add the scaling support.

It's the other way around. Game engines have to be modified to render at a resolution of 960x1080, then the horizontal scaler in the PS3 stretches it out from 960 vertical lines to 1920 vertical lines using line doubling. It's the epitome of a bandaid patch. Sorry to bring up the 360 in this forum, but Microsoft would never have made this kind of mistake in the first place because they know how to design extensible platforms to which they can add functionality (not "features") in a modular fashion.

actually if you would do your research there are websites like beyond3d that have one stories on the so called "myth". its going to be updated. its one of very few things that needs to be bandaged hardware wise, and once the firmware is released to update it everything will be just right.

If there is a demand for it hopefully something will be done. Write them a letter or something. I have a resolution issue with my 360 in that my monitor is 16:10 while the games are 16:9 so I have to do a lot of adjustment to get it sorted.

NO he is not. His TV is a 1080i tv that SUPPORTS 720p (only way it would work) so it takes the 720p input and converts it to 1080i. Most tv's can do this except for a few older ones which is why Sony didn't care about the upscaling.......If this isn't how it works then he is full of it :) My tv does the same - just set the ps3 to output 1080i and 720p - tv does the rest......
