I tried the demo and liked it. I remember the good old days of turn based action. Unfortunately I don't have the time to invest in it.

So far it's been pretty amazing to me and I feel like it's gonna end up as my personal game of the year. A few bugs were encountered but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a restart of the game.

Can't speak for others, but slapping that baby on classic difficulty with ironman has been quite the experience so far. Lost around 12 soldiers, failed a mission (the escorted guy, who was behind cover, got an unlucky shot to the face by a plasma rifle), money is tight, I just lost the support of 3 countries and things seem to quickly head straight down to hell. Seems pretty X-com to me.

Got the game today, but I can't play it because of the download at the end of the installation. Questions for the experts: 1) I have the special edition, is this the reason that I have a 1000 MB download at the end of the installation, because of DLC content, or would I have that much to download off of steam with every edition of the game? Of course the main problem is my internet connection. I can't think of anywhere I can download that much data around here. 2) Do you think that I will be able to correctly install the game at all now that my download is stuck somewhere around 11000/12000 MB's? When I go back to it I might get corrupt data. Steam seems like a reliable system, so I might be okay. please let me know what you think. I typed in my access code, so I might get totally screwed out of my game here. I love how PC versions of the game seem to totally screw you out of playing games just because you don't have an internet connection.

Sorry to break the news but consoles are the same. They need to be updated and if you don't have an internet connection you can't do it (unless get it on USB from another internet connection).

As for your case, do you have any friends that can download it for you? Maybe even the place where you bought it?

I loved the demo but no generated levels is a dealbreaker to me, no matter how many or good looking the handcrafted maps are. I loved Xcom for it's infinite replayability, and the rng levels were a huge part of that to me. Even if they did look similar.

I really don't understand how you can say that's the same thing with consoles. All the games automatically update the system for you if it needs a system update. Are there any games for PS3 or XBOX 360 that require you to have an internet connection just to play the single player game? Maybe the place I bought it can help me finish the download off of Steam. I'll try them eventually, but I hadn't thought of that!

But doesn't it give you already 80+ hours just with the Campaign? That's a lot of gameplay.

My point was that more and more each day you are going to need Internet to do pretty much anything on your computer. Is there any way to upgrade ur internet where you are? Just for future proof.

Yeah, the game is awesome. My only complaint is the 'hold your hand' tutorial is way too long. It takes about a solid hour to an hour and a half to get into the game.

I'm working on upgrading my internet. I hope to have it going in another month. I don't understand what it is that XCOM needed me to download that was 1000 MBs at the end of the installation, and they have a warning that I can't return it now that I tried to install the game. That's pretty unfair for me, because I did not know that you needed to have the internet connection to begin with. I tried installing it at the public library, but that only got me as far as I've noted. I still have hope that Steam will correctly complete the install, but that's far from a sure bet. It's a tough lesson to me to find out the hard way that all PC games require the internet, and I'm not happy about it at all.

Not all games require the Internet. I believe XCOM is a Steam Game so in that case yes, Steam is an online program. The 1GB download was probably just a huge patch to fix issues and optimize the game. It's something GOOD for the game.

It's pretty neat from what I've played, though I only have a very basic understanding of the game at the moment. I'm doing a normal ironman run, since I have a tendency to get crazy about saves sometimes.

One thing I read and has already proven useful is after completing the tutorial, which is the first mission, some base stuff, and then part of the second mission.. just restart the game afterwards. You won't necessarily lose troops and you can adjust the layout of your base much more, as well as choose between more base locations. I set up shop in Africa.

Well, I don't know what Steam is (or how big it is). It seems strange to me that they would have to patch a game on the day it came out. Why do you say, it's something good for the game? you're acting like a 3 year old just because you can, good for you.

Okay, if you just want to help me, then you can tell me if you think that I will eventually be able to complete this download and play the game. Maybe I should just think Steam is good enough for that. The XCOM warning is pretty ridiculous that I can't return the game if it doesn't work. I guess it's no one's fault that they require the internet, but that is pretty surprising that the two games I wanted to get both screwed me like that (Diablo III). They should have made it more clear at the store that all the big time games require the internet. That is a lot different than playing on PS3.

No, you are playing the victim here and it's not warranted. The games that require Internet say so on the box or on the website, just because you didn't read it or researched it (or even just asked here or at the shop) doesn't mean the games "screwed" you over. I hate when people think the games or company screws them over when the information was there from the get go. Steam is "client" that sells games online. Lots of PC games come as "SteamWorks" which means they require Steam to work, which means you need the Internet. Steam also has an OFFLINE mode but it needs to go online to activate the game and update it first (it's a DRM procedure for piracy). The download will eventually complete, be aware that there are probably another million people trying to download that same patch right now, since the game just got released. You mentioned your internet isn't the greatest too, so that's going to influence the timeframe. If you want to game on PC, don't compare it to consoles, just learn how things work. Console also need to update through the internet, and there are rumours that the next generation will use online DRM, which is the same as Steam.

I know for a fact the Diablo III box says "internet connection required." It's not their fault you didn't read the box nor did you research what you were purchasing. Do you always blindly buy stuff without doing research?

That is really weird that you had to download so much I haven't heard of anyone having to do that. Hope that your game works. As for me I'm waiting for a holiday sale since I got like 8 other games I need to beat :). Can't wait to start playing Xcom later this year though.

I would not even think to ask, and it seems ridiculous to me that the games would need the internet. Then, I thought Diablo III was the exception. They're just the ones that make you be online all the time. Now all the other ones make you download that much before playing them. I have never even heard of that. Of course I was able to activate XCOM, but the box did not say you needed to download that much. That was very unclear (even though I didn't even notice that you needed the internet at all until I had already left). I've interuppted the download so many times, I'm worried that the data will be corrupted. I hope that will not be the case. Now I do know to look for that, but it sucks that I didn't just get a cheap game to play, which would not be any problem at all.

It's not intuitive that a game would need to use the internet even for a person to start playing at all. That's not something that I am familiar with. I'm surprised that it's different than the PS3.

It could be, it's probably also just Steam updating the game since you are installing it for the first time. And it seems ridiculous that a game requires Internet to activate? It's because of DRM and Piracy, get used to that fact. Your beloved PS4 will have it too.

I think your a bit off.

It sound to my like bb2945 got caught in the same trap everyone else did when Half-Life 2 was released. (HL2 was the 1st game to require steam) As to the download --- if its the same thing that it was for Half-Life 2 then it isn't a patch but part of the game that wasn't on the disc. Its the community accept form of copy protection. Somehow this is better then putting the disc in the drive. As you can tell i'm not a fan which is kind of a bummer since there are a few steam games I wanted to play. Oh well.

As more and more developers and distributors are embracing steam I would strong advise you not to buy recent release PC games. Wait for them to drop in price.

As to the piracy excuse -- I don't care. After 25 years of unfinished and heavily broken games I simply don't care about the problems piracy causes. They have been treating us like a doormat for years and now they make it worse because people don't want to pay $60 for an overhyped coaster. Distributors and developers going under no longer bothers me.

Every store here when HL2 was released had big signs saying "Internet connection required", often above the shelf and on the shelf itself.

Now I see what the whole thing is, and I will really have to check every game to see if they require the internet to activate it. They already said something to me about Battlefield 3, and then I said no I've played that one without the internet. He didn't bother to explain that he was refering to the PC version of the game. I just assumed that he was wrong about it. That's pretty stupid just to set people up to fail. He obviously could have explained at that time that all games on PC require internet updates at the start of the game. Then I get to XCOM. I noticed after I left the store it said one time internet connection required, so I thought I would try it. It didn't say anything about a download that long. I should have just brought it back in if I knew about the download. I thought it would be for activation only, so I thought to try it. My mistake, but I see how they should have been clear about it at the store.

I've been watching more vidoes about this game recently and i'm starting to become really interested. The only problem is this sort of gameplay isn't really my favourite nor is it my preference and i'm not sure if it'll keep me entertained for long enough. Perhaps i should try the Demo first.. if there is one.

There is a demo that you can try. There is also an interactive youtube trailer that details more of the tactical gameplay and its consequences.

Well, I don't know what Steam is (or how big it is). It seems strange to me that they would have to patch a game on the day it came out. Why do you say, it's something good for the game? you're acting like a 3 year old just because you can, good for you. bb2945
If you don't know what it is maybe you should shut up and listen to someone trying to explain things to you.

Great game, I am playing on normal ironman.. The problem I have with it so far is the disconnect between Normal and classic.. I know classic was suppose to be hard, but this is ridiculous.. You seem to miss way more even though the % hits are more or less the same, and the aliens seem to rarely miss regardless if your in cover or not.

Played 6 hour so far, its very godo but there is still alot of things I miss from the original game.

Its definatly more accesible (not to much dumb downed as some say) but still much better than expected and still a great game in its own right.

It is suppose to be a reimage of the original, not a REMAKE, so I wasnt expecting everything to be the same.

The gameplay is top notch, the controls are good, the art design is nice and its just fun as hell to play. The negatives are there are a good amount of bugs, missing a few things I loved from the original and the camera can be a **** sometimes.

Kevin's 8.5/10 seems about what I would give it after 6-7 hours also.

Played Battlefield 3 without the Internet? I'm guessing ur talking about the bad SP Campaign? If so, you played that game totally wrong. BF3 is all about MP.

And I feel like a broken record here, but no one is setting you up to fail.

It's like you go buy a car, you run out of petrol 2 days later and blame the car salesperson cause he didn't tell you about refilling at the petrol station. Grow up.

Well, it all turned out fine. I was able to finish the download at the local high school. I'm enjoying the game now, and everything is back to normal. Diablo III is next up for me, but I will need to actually have broadband myself in order to play that. Have you tried the game? It seems pretty good, but I'm already getting wiped out on normal difficulty. Once I get my PS3 back from Sony this will be vying with Fifa and Dishonored for best game. My pick is Dishonored, but XCom may surprise me!

I like it a lot,but that's the game that crashed my PS3, so I may hold it against them. Also, I don't really like EA for anything but sports games, Battlefield didn't really do it for me, but maybe it's just the single player campaign.

Crashed ur PS3? WOW, I've never heard of FIFA doing that.

I used to play it on PS3 too (before I sold the console), but I just couldn't take the longer loading screens.

On PC it takes 5 seconds and ur playing. Plus they now use the updated engine so the graphics look better than consoles. I still use a controller, the Logitech F710 Wireless Controller.

As for BF3, ur doing it wrong. The SP is more of a training sequence to get u ready for the real game, Multiplayer.
