So Im just wondering, whether your getting a laptop for school, work or gaming, which is more important: the brand (eg: Apple, AlienWare, Vaio etc.) or the content inside (eg: RAM, graphics card, CPU, HDD etc.)

EDIT: ok now I've added the option for both, so you guy can pick

Definitely content, even for a laptop. Buying an Alienware or Apple is a waste of money, look into Asus instead, especially if you want to game

Both. You can buy top of the line components but if the manufacturing process used by the maker has bad cooling or is just shoddy, those parts will wear out faster. Much like you need to make sure just because the maker (Apple) has a strong brand built on reliability, their components are rather weak for the price Apple is asking.

Next time, you'll want to put this in the Hardware Forum. And what's inside will always trump a flashy appearance. Looks don't matter...

Content, but it is not as black and white :S

If you mean the brand the PC has outside, then I dont care about it at all.

The content brands inside however... ASUS MoBo, EVGA GPU, and so on are pretty important to me, since I hate shelling out money for hardware I am unsure of, or dont know the quality of.

It is also important as in how the laptop is built. I have quite a bit of experience taking apart/repairing laptops and I can say that inside the difference between some brands is astonishing. Of course hardware is hardware, an Intel chip is an Intel chip.... but for example some manufacturers really protect the HDD inside the laptop with rubber, good positioning, good anti-vibrations methods while other cheaper manufacturers just have the HDD there with 2 screws. In the end, you get what you paid for...

It's what's inside that counts. If you want a cool logo on the outside go buy some stickers.
