I just recently started replaying through the original FEAR after almost 6 years since my first playthrough. I have to admit I kind of forgot how great it's gameplay was. The firefights still look incredible thanks to it's particle and lighting effects. It got me thinking about what games have truly impressed me in the same way since then. I really can't think of many if any (possibly the STALKER games). Even the sequels to fear couldn't really nail that intense feel during firefights.

So I ask you guys, what FPS games have really impressed you with their gunfights in the recent years?

Probably FEAR.

Everything in FPSs since has had a big "been there, done that" feel.

I believe this is because the market is just flooded with them. Eventually you run out of very unique ideas that work well. Sure, there are a lot of new ideas, but very few that can be worked into the standards that we expect today.

A good idea cannot save a game that falls flat everywhere else.

Hmm... it's been a long time. I really liked the fast fps of old, these days we get nothing like that, only those 'stand till, aim then take cover' games. Can't really recall any.

Crysis. The gunplay and movement feels so right. Plus all the interactivity and different ways to take out an objective....it's just too awesome. I just picked up Mirror's Edge from the summer sale and it's incredible as well. Not as good as Crysis imo, but it's so different and unique. Battlefield 3's movement and controls are the smoothest I've ever experienced, so it's really sad that the gunplay isn't nearly as good.

Oh, forgot to mention Serious Sam 3. That was the first SS game I've played, and wow...so, so, so good.

Far Cry 2's emergent gameplay. It allows more combat freedom than Stalker and Crysis.

Half life 2

Portal

Fear

Stalker

COD4 MW1.

For the older titles, not including consoles, and after 2000.

A recent note worthy try, especially for an Indie game is: Hard Reset. There was a lot to like about the game, the weapons were great, so were upgrading them, the combat itself wasn't anything new, but it just did it well. I would like to see more games in this vein, maybe a different setting/story/theme. But a good throwback to some old school (Duke 3d, Quake 2, Shadow Warrior, Blood) era of FPS games.

And another recent one but isn't really a shooter, but it did blow me away was Zeno Clash. (albeit it was 3 years ago)

While reading the title of the thread I had FEAR in my mind... :P.

I guess Call of Duty 4 came close and Crysis aside from the Visuals but neither blew me away.

EDIT: Half Life 2 also the first play through was epic.

Nothing has blown me away since FEAR. It is still the only game I have finished and replayed immediately.

Been awhile, but Medal of Honor Allied Assualt was one of first fps's that really blew me away. The whole experience was excellent. Many others have been enjoyable including Fear, but that one will always be my favorite.

On a side note... I hope Doom 4 and Half Life 3 come out in the next year or two, I don't think I can handle military shooters much longer.

Zeno Clash absolutely amazing fps melee combat and something more gun oriented I'd say Crysis+Warhead for the suit powers and what it brought to the gameplay.

undoubtedly crysis. the combo of wide open areas, stealth, destruction, night and day cycles, the switch from open world to linear at the end as the story required... it was a hell of a ride and damn near perfect in my book

BFBC2 was decent, didn't blow me away, but there was a lot of nice things about it. I haven't tried BF3 yet.

Same here, I think. When I started playing Metro 2033, I thought (and really hoped) that it would totally blow me away. Unfortunately, the gunplay itself and the enemy animations are just sooo damn clunky. It doesn't do justice to the amazing atmosphere of the game. I would love to see a new Stalker game, that took a few visual ideas from Metro.

I know a bunch of "cool" kids will bash this, but honestly the last time I was "blown away" by an FPS was the original Halo game. That game consumed not only my life, but the lives of my gamer friends. In fact, I even remember getting in a fist fight over a local LAN multiplayer session.

Haven't really felt that since Halo.

Battlefield 3's multiplayer is top notch. It's got a learning curve, especially if you are rusty with your reaction times and such. But after you begin to get your game back, it's a pretty amazing experience.

EDIT: Except for SQDM... that **** sucks don't play it.

The original Farcry has yet to be surpassed as far variety of attack options and gunplay in a semi open world FPS. Every "Cry" game since has felt constricting.

The Stalker games get the atmosphere and depth crown and have yet to be surpassed in those areas.

BF3 gets the multiplayer and GFX crown. I've got 312 hrs in it so far and it'll hopefully share space with Planetside 2 as my multiplayer FPS of choice.

I've been playing some Red Orchestra 2 and am very surprised of some of the gameplay mechanics. The game is pretty buggy and hit detection is not the best but the cover system, aiming methods (being able to focus in with iron sights, as well as being able to use iron sights with a scoped rifles by raising the gun higher up), squad management, and vehicle control (such as tanks have different seats with different roles, plus having to fill in roles if your squad ages get killed). It's a shame it doesn't have a couple more layers of polish. Otherwise I think it would be a very special game.

Tribes: Ascend. I never played the first Tribes games so it was a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stagnate market. I will say it's not the best FPS I've ever played, but it is the last one that blew me away.

Never played a F.E.A.R. game or a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, but I bought all three S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and the first F.E.A.R. game during the Steam sale. Once I build a new rig, I look forward to playing them. Of the games I have played, I guess Half Life 2: Episode 2. Bioshock was pretty fun as was Doom 3 (expansion not so much).

lol how could I forget Crysis. Another good FPS. Only thing that let me down about Crysis was how easy it was to beat on it's hardest setting.
