I tend to feel the same way about Half Life. The story itself isn't all that deep or interesting. Instead, I think what makes Half Life's story so exciting is the way that it is told. I don't think theres many games that captures the flow between story and gameplay as well as Half life does.
MAX PAYNE 2
INDIGO PROPHECY
CALL OF CTHULHU

I second that. Would just like to add Mafia and the Thief series to the above list though.
Games that have the best storylines....
Planescape Torment
Mafia
The Longest Journey
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic II
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Beyond Good & Evil
Homeworld
Silent Hill 1, 2, 3
Grim Fandango
Clive Barker's Undying
Day of the Tentacle
Tribes Vengeance
Fallout 1 & 2
Arcanum
Thief
Psychonauts
Honorable Mentions:
Indigo Prophecy
Max Payne 1 & 2
Prince of Persia Sands of Time Trilogy (Sands of Time, Warrior Within, Two Thrones)
Riddick
Aliens vs. Predator 2
Halo's storyline is very original, Aliens aren't invading, they're fighting for control of a super weapon. Have you even played the game? And uhh no other game has done anything like that.whgresiak
Yes they have. Three immediately come to mind.
In Aliens vs. Predator...the humans, aliens, and predator are fighting each other for control over an ancient alien temple and its secrets.
In System Shock 2 the Many, SHODAN, and the Humans are fighting for control of a new advanced starship....the Many want to use it as a weapon, especially to infect other worlds, SHODAN wants to use its advanced technology, and the humans are fighting to keep it out of both their hands.
In Aliens vs. Predator 2....the humans, predators, and aliens are fighting each other for territory of an advanced alien ruins.
....and there have been others to have a similiar kind of plot theme.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1, not 2, 2 sucked but KOTOR just kicked asswhgresiak
Anyone who actually got enough info and influence with certain characters to understand what was going on would know that one of the only areas that KOTOR II was equal or even superior to the original KOTOR was in its deeper storyline and more complex characters.....especially with the whole revelation Krea gives you concerning Revan.
I'll second these games and add:
Max Payne 1 & 2
The Longest Journey/Dreamfall (Dreamfall ending is a letdown though, although it certainly could be redeemed)
KOTOR I (KOTOR II has some gameplay improvements but the story leaves you ultimately "meh")
Second Sight (If you like 3rd person action/adventure, this is a really good game. It has psionics and the story evolves from the characters present and past which fills out the overally storyline)
Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness (Yeah! Go ahead and laugh, but I love this game. I don't think TR is general thought of as having deep stories, but this one had the best and more immersive storyline in the entire series. Plus, I think it's a grossly underrated game)
NOTE: As far as oft mentioned Indigo Prophecy , I must point out the while the story is good for much of the game there's a point in the 2/3 or more into the game where it feels like a huge chunk of the game was chopped out. It just didn't flow well into the final acts. It was like "oh hey, so we're here now". I believe there's a directors cut that may improve on that - don't know. Also, note that some gameplay elements are lacking such as the simple simon action elements which blow. Not a bad game but not great. I will add though that the game itself is very original in gameplay and story. In fact, you could call it revolutionary to a degree. I think these developers are innovative in the adventure genre and I would try out their future games. While I wouldn't go so far as labeling Indigo Prophecy as "action/adventure", it is definitely "adventure +".
Metal Gear! :D They should remake the whole series for the PC.WickaWireX
Well you guys could play some MGS2 for now.

OMG a SUPERWEAPON never heard of that before. Halo = most overrated game franchise of all time. Period.
In my opinion, The Longest Journey tells the best story in all of gaming, and shouldn't be missed. It's sequel, Dreamfall, is a close second. Other wonderful stories include Grim Fandango, Planescape: Torment, Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2, No One Lives Forever, Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Beyond Good & Evil, and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I don't really disagree with any of the other suggestions, though I don't know that Halo, Age of Mythology, Guild Wars, or Call of Juarez meetthe standards you are looking for. Kevin-V
IMHO AOM had the best single player campaign for an RTS. It had a very good story considering it was an RTS.
Final Fantasy VII for me.
The depth of story in that game goes far deeper than many players, even fanboys, give it credit I believe. It's a game that you have to play several times over, catching certain details in different perspectives and putting it all together. Very few who claim they truly understand what's going on in Final Fantasy VII actually do, which makes it all the better IMO.
