just play it and you see.
good story, nice post-nuclear-war scenery, adult themes and great roleplaying elements. that's Fallout in a nutshell.
the Fallout games offer:
targeted groin shots
post-nuclear survivalist fantasy
gratuitous violence, cynicism, and ugliness (literally and figuratively)
These games were a huge deal at the time. Troo RPGers still hype their "non-linearity" and "open-endedness." Internet nerd wars to decide teh greatest RPG evar usuallyend ina stalemate betweenPlanescape Torment and Fallout.
u can roam around the world as you like, kill things, make money, do quests, lots of violance and action. the scenery is also awesome, with the post apocalyptic look

where can we buy games this old???
Time Frame, these games were groundbreaking in RPG world at the time they came out. They may not seem as impressive by todays standards.
I am surprised no one else has really explored the post holocaust genre with any success.

May not seem ? It's still miles ahead of any new RPG and most of the old ones
I dont think Gamespot wants me to publish the link to a semi-competitor, so you'll forgive me if I don't do so.
However, I just checked Amazon.com for you, They have the Fallout Complication available (all 3 Games) for $13. Just do a search on the Homepage and you'll find it. Believe me, its worth it. I just dont know how well they run on VISTA, if you are using that. XP should be OK.
I would risk it, its only $13 and they are great games.
Enjoy.

kk, thanks
Why is the series so great?
1. you can basically do anything you want. For example, if you see an NPC, you can likely talk to it, kill it, rob it...
2. interesting gameplay system. Its not like the dice roll system often found in DnD games, which is nice
3. story is cool
4. atmosphere is cool
5. funny as hell
just a few reasons.
There's a lot to this series that makes it cool. My personal favorite thing was the "futuristic dystopia" motif. I LOVE all that 50's goody-goody nostalgia tied to a complete nuclear apocalypse. It's extremely well done. Stubb's the Zombie did something similar, to name a more recent game. (although that probably isn't well known enough to give you the idea) There was also the character-building system. You could go through the game as a combat-oriented character, or you could pick other traits to be your strong suit. I remember one of the stock characters was a "sex appeal" character, which would have you going through large parts of the game based on your charisma and bartering type skills. I know this idea has been done before, but I thought the fallout games did a better job of making it viable for you to actually beat a lot of quests based on non-combat skills. And, yeah the aimed combat thing was kind of interesting. You don't see that in RPGs anymore. (where you can aim a shot at an arm to disarm a character or aim a shot at a leg to immobilize) That being said, the graphics are probably going to be painful to you. If you've played any of the Baldur's Gate games, you should have an idea of what they look like. Also Fallout Tactics (I've never played) is considered a crummy entry in the series. I have played the Fallout beat-em-up. It is pretty doggone bad, but that was a console game, so you probably won't get it.Srinivassa
I am not really too big on graphics. Games such as WarCraft 3 (which I still play to this day) prove that, despite not having the best graphics possible, the game can still be amazing due to its gameplay. On a side note, I haven't yet played the Baldur's Gate games, seeing as that I only received the compilation a day or two ago. I can't wait to install and play them, however.
Additionally, the collection I'll be getting includes Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics, all of which have a score of 80% or higher on gamerankings. That console game doesn't seem to be in there or anything. For which console was it, though?

That's it, im buying this game.
The scores on gamerankings seem decent, not above average or anything. I'll be getting the games nonetheless it seems. People only seem to have a postive opinion on this game. Hexagon_777Games - especially on the PC - were rated a little bit differently back then, which were still often considered completely independent of console games. Fallout today is generally regarded as a classic and one of the best RPG's of all time. Games back then (the Fallout/Baldur's Gate/Planescape triad) are a large part of the reason you see so many modern RPG's getting roasted by fans over certain issues - they were gameplay things that were done better a decade ago.

actually even today they are as much remarkable as they used to be when they were first realesed.
in addition to what have been metnioned (espeically Srinivassa'spost)
1. open-ended character-building, and therefore ROLEPLAYING, system. BG and D&D classics go for the diveristy of classes route, and Fallouts go for a more implicit, in-game developing route; not defined by initial classes, but by the lvling-up perks and skills. However, both systems are based on basic, quite stable, starting attributes (the usual STH, DEX and etc.) Open-ended roleplying in that it's not really that your character choses different waysof doingquests, but because your character is good at certain things (therefore weak at others) and so is able to do quests in certain rather than otherways.
2. open-ended game world. Not the free-roaming, but a story/character driven narrative-world in which you pick up more or less subtle clues and adventure your way into quests and events.
3.truely tactical turn-base combat, CRPG at its best, opposing to arcade style (though I myself prefer BG's D&D rule and combat system)
4.even though it's in 2D, the"sensation" of gory combat is actually (for me personally anyway) far more fun and exciting than any of the 3D bloodfest shooters. Love that perk which will make your target burst and die in a more messed-up fashion ^^
5. Fallout Tactics has improved graphic, though still terribly out-of-date by today's standard. But, it's linear and based on disctint missions. the gory and tactical combat is there but lacks the immersive roleplaying fun of Fallout 1-2
6.I don't really care for gamespot's review score. gaming is a private and personal experience, which is not"portable" at all. For the most part, the overall sentiment of gaming communities is a far better certierion to a game's quality than a review from certain self-proclaimed "prefoessional game critic." moreover, I think most newer high-score games just get disproptional bouns scores fort heir pretty graphics. Look at the first line of Crysis review --it mentions "visually stunning" before anythingelse. Back in the golden years of PC games, gameplay came first and it was really a "bonus" that the graphic was decent.
Ha, targeted groin shots. Slight *SPOILER* ahead.
I remember in the first fallout trying to save Tami (that her name? girl from shady sands) from the raiders. I had a smart enough character to outsmart the raider leader but I always saved the game and challenged him in a one on one. The whole fight was my character punching for his groin, till I caused a critical hit which he would drop to the ground saying "Ah my groin!" and then punching his eyes out on the ground, till he yelled out "I'm blind! I'll kill you you muther^&%*" or something along those lines.
Great game.

Thanks again for all the answers. I am definitely gonna look into this series for a measely 12.49 euros. On a side note, you guys seem a lot more mature than the nubcakes on System Wars. I'm kinda...shocked. :?

Yeah I know that. It's just the whole sprite looking thingh turns me off.
I just don't see how all these awsome moments could be so awsome when all you see is like a sprite falling over ect.
I mean, I'd happily play zelda, SSB ect. Because I can see what's going on with the animation ect. I just don't see how it would work with that.
