Anyways, I think most shooters aren't even worth the minute it takes to install them. But I'd say Quake 4 or even Doom 3. The latter has a couple of interesting TC's/mods out there, at least.
Yeah unfortunately there are just too many to list but I was looking back in my jewel cases the other day and found Close Combat: First to Fight. It is a couple years old but still holds up today as a great tactical shooter that went slightly under the radar at its release. It may not be THE best but it is a great shooter that is probably very cheap to pickup at this point.
Oh. I like all decent shooter games. BF2 is good but I think I'll have to put CoD at the top of my list. Not so good know but that game brought me from casual online gamer to hardcore and was balls of fun both online and off for me.
The Half Life and Call of Duty series'. The best Single Player FPS money can buy (CoD has some very good MP too, and HL2 comes with CSS I think, mine did.) For multiplayer, I would recommend Battlefield 2 or 2142.
doom (ultimate & 2 & final) - still playin' all these years later... system shock 2 is the better game, but it's hard to really call it a shooter even though it's fps

Doom 3's single player was ok, but definitely not the best. I recently downloaded the Doom 3 OpenCoop mod and it rocks. It's a doom 3 coop mod that supports all of the sp levels for up to 4 players. I've been playing with my little brother and having lots of fun. It is definitely more fun than standard single player.
The Unreal tournament series, FarCry, FEAR, Battlefield series, Call of Duty series. the list coudl go on and on but those are the games I hae enjoyed the most over the last few years.
I can't believe peeps havn't mentioned Stalker yet. If you have the system to play it as the way the designers intended, It holds up pretty well considering how long it was in development. The weapons are sweet, and everytime a zone is cleared, the next time you come back, it is repopulated making for excellent replay values. The multiple endings are a nice touch as well. The AI can be pretty brutal at times; flanking, taking cover etc....

OK this might not be the absolutely best shooter for the PC because of all the qualitiy FPS that are coming out, but I'm gonna say that MAX PAYNE and MAX PAYNE 2 are incredible shooters for the PC. They have a very unique and fun style and follow that up with great guns and killer storyline; not to mention it's graphics are very good for its time. Plus, it is made by Rockstar.
so, in recap i would say that other than typical FPS games, the MAX PAYNE series is probly the best shooter for the PC! try the demo if you dont believe me.
I think the story is decent enough. There are multuiple side quests and different factions; friendly and unfriendly that will keep you busy. It's fun to watch firefights happening that have no relation to your charactor. The atmosphere is supperb. Also, using chernobyl as the main story arc is unigue and just plain cool. I just finished the game, that is why i give it a high endosement, for what thats worth..lol...
there just isnt enough fps on the pc... doom3,quake,hl2 are some of my favorites but whens the last time we got a really good fps its been quite awhile...
