Ok guys i have an i5 650 which is the i5 that is dual core. It a great dual core but it is not quad, which is a problem in games such as bf3. I was able to play the alpha farely well on medium 1080p with my gtx 460 but idk how much of a different a quad would use. 5fps? 10fps? 15fps? Also i heard optimization might help later on when the games comes out, and alot of people told me i was fine because it was a fast dual but im not sure. And just to make sure for the future, im wondering what games that ARE out and that are COMING out will use actual 4 cores? Thanks in advance.

Well, more and more games are utilising quad-cores however most games still run just fine on a fast dual-core.

Unfortunately BF3 doesn't seem to be one of those games. In the case of BF3 I'd say that a quad-core would boost your FPS considerably (assuming that your video card is good - a GTX 460 1GB is good), especially when lots of things are going on at once.

yeah, Bad Company 2 runs a LOT better on quad cores than dual cores. I would only assume BF3 would be the same if not more dependent on quad's.

It uses all 6 of my cores and runs great on my system.

At 1680 x 1050, max everything, I am consistently 130+ fps.

BF3 Alpha was running usually at least 60+fps and spikes that went higher. But I am sure it will go higher once drivers mature and their coding is optimized.

I was using an E8400 (core 2 duo at 3.4ghz) with my ATI 5870 playing RIFT and was getting a moddest frame rate on high settings. I switched things up to my current I7 2600k and I increased the settings and still gained 30 FPS.

I'd say most graphic intensive games coming out use all four cores now.

For PC games, I say no. They said yes are marketing tool. But, in reality, the game has to support lower end PCs (non-graphics wise). Why I said non-graphics wise? Because graphics settings can be adjusted. You can't turn down physics where people starting to walk thru walls. Or AI standing still doing nothing.magicalclick
That makes no sense. Legacy support has to end somewhere. Devs don't have to support dual cores forever.

most games these days use 4 or more. I went from an Intel E5500 dual core to an AMD X6 1100 hexcore and saw a HUGE boost in fps with the same exact video card. Even if games dont utilize all the cores, those spares are working on background tasks, making everything run butter smooth. RTSs, sims, physics intense titles all relying heavily on CPU power, like listed above, the new Battlefield engines love juicy CPUs, and a simple addition of cores makes it run much smoother.

kk the thing is i justttt got mine. So im not going to upgrade anytime soon and i just got my gtx 460 like a month ago. This irks me i thought mine was a quad at first, then realized it wasnt, then found out hey, cpu quad cores now make your games run with a trillion more fps! lol greaaaaaaaaat. Should i be ok for the majority of games since its on the newer end of dual cores? thats my MAIN question.

All games use quad cores. If you have an i5 or i7 quad, pick any game from the last 5 years. Pick a spot in that game and take an FPS average. Then disable 2 cores in the BIOS and check that spot again. Guarantee you will see an FPS drop.
