When is your birthday?
A 8600ultra would be a better choice.

If you want it RIGHT NOW then yeah it's a good video card. But, I'd wait for the other DX10 cards coming out in a few months.

really if you can wait a month and a half, the 8600ultra and gt will rule the mid range world, plus it will cost about the same as the 7800gt, but the ultra is better...numberwise

Just tell her, That the price for performance ratio makes the card an absolute steal (which is true).

Where do you live?  Because you said "mum" which suggests to me you're not American, and thus $200 to you, is not $200 to everybody else (I live in Aus so i always say $200AU).  Just a question so we can tell you what best to get.

Okay so 200 quid is a substantial amount of money to spend on a video card (I'm English but live in Aus, so 200 pounds is about $440AU which isn't bad).  You can still get a decent video card for 200, but your probably better off waiting a few months, because by then you can get a better card, for the same amount of money.  For less than 200 (since your mum says 200 is too much) you can still get a relatively good card.  But don't set your hopes too high if you're financially restricted.  7800 is a good card, but too expensive for you at the moment.  That will change by April thanks to the full G80 lineup which is nearly among us.

yep...how good is the rest of your computer, because there is no sense getting a gaming card if your still packing a pentium 4 2.2 and 512mb of ram...but i still think it would be wise to wait, the 8600ultra is 179 USD, and the 8600gt is only 149, which is only slightly more than the aforementioned 7600GT

Ray, what mobo do you have on your rig? (Sorry - not trying to thread-steal!)

Could you go into a little more detail on the EVGA step-up thing? I'm in the dark on that.

So in guessing its Better to get a Nvidia 8600Ultra? So its best to think the 8600ultra as a Nvidia 7600 Good price for good Profromance? Kewl im gonna ask her to get a 8600ultra 0_0

Your CPU would likely be a performance bottleneck for games.  Pentium D?  Isn't that supposed to be "Celeron D"?  Going with an ultra powerful video card wouldn't entirely be worth it since, with the slower/weaker CPU, the CPU wouldn't be able to keep up.  I don't know what card is around the peak area, but I'd suspect the 7600 GS as my best guess.  I'm not familiar with the Pentium D (or Celeron D) CPUs.

The 8600 Ultra is far more powerful then the 7800GT, and is also DirectX 10 as opposed to DirectX 9. But like said above, It depends on your CPU.

Well macpop, i dont think everyone can get a job, since some may actually focus on studying (in my case, i only work during the summer holidays at my uncles PC business, pays me about $12 or so an hour, well at least last summer he did), but not everyone can get a job, so i dont see what you are laughing at exactly. Anyway, the 8600GT/Ultra will be FAR better than the 7800GT, hell the 7800GT was never good to start of with, for example a friend of mine bought a rig back in Feb (i bought mine in April or so), he got an 7800GT, i got mine with an 7900GT. Well in FEAR, he can not max out at 1280x960, has to turn down a few options down, as in quite a few, while as i dont need to, same story with CoH. Anyways point is, wait for the 8600GT, they will be $160 or $180, or if in doubt, do what macpop told ya, get a job to earn $100 heheh, but seriously i would not get the 7800GT, anyway if you need a card of simmilar spec, the 7900GS would be a better bet.

My mobo is pretty crap, its a GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3.  I'm upgrading that soon though.  As for the EVGA step-up program, I'm not familiar with that either.  What is it?

The DS3 is good isn't it?! To the OP, If you have £200 then that's awesome, the 8600ultra will probably be about £120.But that's just my guesstimation being that it's $179... And things are more expensive here in Britain than US.

The 8300 and 8600 sereies will lie between $60-120, depending on what model you get.  Wait to buy a card then, even if it's dxd9 because those prices will plummet, and that dxd9 card your seeing now for $200, will be under $100.

The DS3 is pretty average. The 680i mobo's are much better, with mine not even being SLI Compatible. It's an okay budget board, but if you want to do some decent overclocking and have SLI GPU's, don't get the DS3 as it will only hold you back.

Honestly, i wouldnt get that card, its aged a lot since then and the 7900 offerings are cheaper actually. In stead, i wouldnt get anything right now. DX10 GPUs are just out and cost buttloads however ATi will soon offer something and more flexible pricing to their models. Similarly, its just the dawn of the new API, this summer, we will see fully fledged cards and they will cost a lot less too.

Then why are you getting an 8600ultra? Why are you even getting a directx10 card if your not gonna use it for dx10 games? If you want to play the games you have now get like a 7900gt or something.
