Valve's Steam content distribution system has apparently been hacked. The culprit allegedly got deep enough into the system to steal credit card information and financial information on Valve. DailyTech reports the hacker known as "MaddoxX" broke in and obtained:

* Screenshots of internal Valve web pages
* A portion of Valve's Cafe directory
* Error logs
* Credit card information of customers
* Financial information on Valve

MaddoxX posted the information he obtained on an anti-Steam website. He has also threatened to release a spreadsheet of the credit card information. We've contacted Valve for a statement on this alleged breach in security.

You know, it's 4 am here Pacific time.  I bet Gabe's on his way to work now after being woke up whenever this happened earlier this morning, he's pissed.  This is like the second time in a while that VALVe got hacked, first during the making of Half-Life 2, now with Steam.  Guy can't catch a break.

Exactly the reason i don't buy anything online. No matter how "secure" something is.. it never is really secure. There is ALWAYS a way in. It just takes someone to want to do it and it'll get done.

This is quite disappointing, I'm hoping that Valve store only recent CC info because I haven't used it for some time. I think it's VERY disturbing that Valve haven't commented. I think the fact that valve haven't said anything almost confirms the hack. They could just come out and say "recent claims of hacking are false" or "Valve's security has been compromised and we are contacting authorities" ANYTHING would be nice, silence in this case is deadly.

If a company is so trusting of thier own system they should put there own company assets on the line aswell.

Aliitle off point but i hate steam and company attitudes about credit card usage over the net. They justify it as being safe , secure & the best way to purchase. But when ---- gets hacked who's really out of pocket?

Well I hope this gets worked out.  I would not want Valve to be tied up in court over this and not be able to finish their upcoming titles.  After seeing their bank accounts posted it is obvious that Valve would have trouble paying for their court expenses.  GL Valve and just a reminder keep things locked down better.  Luckily I no longer have the card I used to purchase my games over STEAM, so I'm not too worried.

If true, this is just another reason why hackers should be jailed for long terms.

It's true - there's no way to truly secure a system, and there is always some pissed off punk who wants to hack your system.  The only way to stop hackers is to make the punishment so terrible they won't even run a 1337 Super Crazy Hack Scripts!!!

Teach steam a lesson by giving out other people CC info who in fact have nothing to do with how steam functions at all? I don't see anything great about his and I really don't know how anyone can anyway.

 Actually, buying online these days is A LOT more secure than buying something in person with a credit or debit card.   All it takes is a single person working in the LP department of the store you bought from to screw over millions of people.  The LP departments in department stores such as Wal-Mart and Target  have access to every number for fraud investigation.   Keep in mind that people working in LP departments are usually 18-25 and their average wage is only about $10/hr.... The only requirement for the job is a good/clean credit report since they have access to these numbers.

Offline or online, there are always going to be thieves in the world.

It's just as easy for a dishonest clerk to copy your credit card information as it is to break a website's code. In fact, it's probably easier.

Theoretically, they'd be able to look up his nick and password based on his email address. That is, unless he used a different email account and doesn't remember it's name.

If maddox is the guy who did it, then he will.  In Russia, they are not very too keen on pirates, or keen on any negligence.  I know that the Russians are very violent people, WATCH OUT MADDOX!

This sounds like a load of crap to me. This is an extreme security breach; he could get a very stiff penalty and jail time just like the guy who stole the HL2 code. There can only be 2 motives for doing this:

1) Attack Valve just because he/they don't like them. Do you seriously think one script kiddie could hack through Valve's most secured server which is built to prevent this? Besides, I don't even think that the codes are stored server side because if it was then you wouldn't need to enter your card every time you buy an item. Also, can you even use the keys without expiry date and security number on the signature strip?

2) A real credit card fraud operation. If this is real, why would you want to start a smear campaign against Valve and thus nullifying future "businessmen" with cards that the holder has already forekown could be used against them? There would be no point flaunting this information.

If the cause was to create panic on the interweb and increase e-penis, it certainly worked. This is a hoax to me until Valve tells me otherwise (they are forced to by law in almost 40 states; if they don't it's considered unfair business practice and they could go out of business).

The panic this has caused, and the degree of reality about the threat to people's CC info should be a bit of a lesson to everyone. It's quite simple really. If people want to jump on the bandwagon that has grown of the past few decades of "living beyond their means" by running up CC's, then risk is part of their daily lives and they have to live with it.

I know there are exceptions to the rule, people who buy using CCs for convenience and pay the balance immediately thereby not actually carrying a balance. That is the "exception" to the rule however.

Most people use CCs simply because they can't wait until they can afford stuff. They want it "now" so they just "chi-ching" it. Gone are the days (for the most part anyways) when people bought what they could "afford" to buy.

Until recently (about 70 years or so) living in debt was actually illegal. How soon we forget.

If one want's to live financially safe and free one should pay cash and/or only buy something when they can afford it. Anything else is unwise and risky. If it CAN happen, it WILL happen. I know at least 2 people who have been skewered because someone got hold of their CC info.

Think about it. When you hear of financial institutions saying they will help you "Build your credit" do you know what that actually means? It means they will simply help you get into a "little bit of debt" now so you can get into a "Humungous amount of debt" later! LOL. The term "building your credit" is a myth aimed at the naive. All they are doing is helping you become a slave to the institutions you owe.

So when I hear stories like this it kinda makes me laugh because really, if people are affected in a bad way, who do they have to blame for it?

Excuse the rant but I only say it in hopes that the sooner people realize the way things work nowadays, the sooner they will be able to make wise and safe choices about how they handle their finances and be able to sleep a lot better at night.

Financial freedom is something that takes discipline, but is easily attainable for ANYONE who wants it. CCs are aimed at taking that freedom away plain and simple. I wish I would've learned this lesson when I was younger but better late than never and I can tell y'all, living financially free is absolutely amazing.
