I upgrade my card every other generation but it really seems like the 9xxx series is rather disappointing according to most benchmarks, reviews, previews, card owners etc. I was gonna wait for the 9800GT if there is a release planned for this model but I'm starting to think maybe I should go for the 9600GT to hold off for a bit.

I just wanna know if the performance will be that big of an increase and what not. The rest of my system specs:

  • Intel Core Duo E6850
  • 4gigs of ram of Crucial Ballistix for Vista or 3 gigs of ram of Crucial Ballistix for XP (I dual boot)
  • PSU is a Corsair 620HX
  • Gigabyte P35-DS3R 1.0 motherboard
  • X-Fi Xtremegamer Fatality pro series sound card
  • I play at 1680X1050 (my native res)

Thanks

It will be twice as fast in certain games, so yes its worth it. Plus lets not even mention the DX10 support and added features. Plus vastly improved image quality, since the 7 series had horrible image quality.

Sure its going to be worth it. YOur system is really so good and it deserves to have better card. However, if you can think about getting 8800GTS (512mb) then you are doing your self agood favour.

The 9800GTX will be the way to go, but for now the 9600GT is worth it, definitely.

I'll tell you this much - I've got the X1900XT, and I'm not going to upgrade it just yet. Granted, the X1900 series' "overkill" shaders has proved to be a much more future-proof design, and while our cards were neck-and-neck back when they were fairly new, the X1900XT now has a fairly distinct advantage in today's games. Even so, I'd hold off for another few months unless you just can't get some of your favourite games to run the way you want them to.

7950GT is still an okay card even at 16x10. Sure theres going to be a noticeable performance increase from a 9600GT, but I don't think its worth $145-$170 yet.

The very same thing could be said about 8800GT and GTS.

I wouldn't do it yet, but thats just me. I'd wait to see what the nV 10 series and HD4xxx series have to offer first.

Well your card can do AA with HDR and as you said edges out the 7 series by a good margin in the latest games plus your cards image quality is pretty much on par with the 8 series but these is a big difference in image quality between the 7 and 8+ series. So it's not just the raw performance increase but also the features set which probably make it worth an upgrade.

I've just upgrade from a 1900xtx to a 3870 and it was worth it. The noise is a lot lower, before my GPU can reach 92 C but now the new one only go to 50 something and crysis, call of duty 4 and other games perform a lot better.

Im not that noob man... at least my post could show that i've been here for along time. If you dont know that my posts are 100% in hardware forums ONLY then you just read it.

However, its just amistake with typing. Im sure that i had this lesson when i was 7 years old so i can easily figure out ''X'' is bigger than ''Y'' when we write '' X > Y ''.
Hard one, ya :P

Thank you guys!. After 2 weeks of thinking whether I should get a 9600GT or a 9800GTX or even the 8800GTS and possibly waiting for the 9900 editions, I decided I will get a BFG 9800GTX OCX. Better video cards come all the time and If I keep waiting for the next best thing, I'll be waiting forever.

I bought it yesterday but I have yet to install it but I will soon.
