IDK if they are technically "indie" titles but Braid and Limbo stand out from the last gen. Try those if you haven't.
Funny, I'm watching Indie Game right now on Netflix, and Braid is one of the games featured in the file. Will def pick it up....hopefully Steam has it n sale soon.IDK if they are technically "indie" titles but Braid and Limbo stand out from the last gen. Try those if you haven't.

IMO Braid, Cave Story, FTL are all must plays. Â Then you could safely go with other peoples favorite choices. Â Some popular ones are Limbo, World of Goo, Hotline Miama was flavor of the month a little while ago and is somewhat relevant still, Bastion is pretty criticially acclaimed.
I'm having a pretty good time playing through Unepic. Â FTL is still enjoyable when I have a little time to kill and so is Kerbal Space Program. Dungeons of Dredmor and Legend of Grimrock are both fun. Â Legends of Dawn is new and has promise but it's currently a little rough around the edges. I also still play Terraria from time to time. Â
Hell, there are honestly too many good indie games on Steam to list them all.
I agree 100% with Cavestory and FTL, never played Braid, but those 2 are fantastic!IMO Braid, Cave Story, FTL are all must plays. Â Then you could safely go with other peoples favorite choices. FTL, Limbo, and Bastion are great suggestions. I enjoyed Braid but it's a bit slow and different and might not be for everyone.
I Am Alive is an interesting survival horror post apacolypse game that barely looks like an indy title.
If you like point and click adventure games, the Wadjet Games titles are really fun (Gemini Rue, Blackwell series, etc).
Deadlight is a side scrolling "Flashback"-like game set in a zombie post apocolypse.
The Swapper is a similar type game but set in a sci-fi future.
Dust: An Elysian Tail is an action side scroller
Ms. Splosion Man is an entertaining side scrolling action platformer.
Sequence is a funky RPG/DDR game.
Xenonauts is an independent spiritual successor to the original X-com
-Byshop
Mark of the Ninja, Bastion, Lone Survivor, Hotline Miami, Frozen Synapse. FLT and Cave Story are also good.
More people need to play Mark of the Ninja, almost no one ever mentions it.
The following are what I would say are my top five, mostly unofficial, I guess.
Mark of the Ninja (my favorite stealth game of this past gen)
Bastion (one of my favorite RPGs of this past gen)
Hotline Miami (a brutal and intoxicating action title)
The Walking Dead (yes, Telltale are independent, yes this game is absolutely fantastic)
Torchlight II (bigger and better than the sequel, now with coop!)
Other fun indie games include:
Dust: An Elysian Tail (great sidescrolling action title)
Strike Suit Zero (fun arcade space shooter)
Castle Crashers (great sidescrolling beat-em up)
Wizorb (it's like a pinball/puzzle mixed with fantasy, I like it a lot)
Noitu Love 2: Devolution (fun and hectic 2D sidescrolling action game)
Torchlight (DRM free on GoG, not as good as sequel but cheaper if you only plan to play solo)
I also have but yet to play:
Thomas Was Alone
Lone Survivor
Hard Reset
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
Dyad
Fez
I did not care for:
Braid
Super Meat Boy
Evoland
That's what I can list off the top of my head, hopefully it helps you out.
Hotline Miami, Fez, Mark of the Ninja, Bastion, Rogue Legacy, Cave Story, La Mulana..those are the ones off the top of my head!
MUST play indie games can't "fit" in a TOP 5 ...
Amnesia for the horror fans, Bastion - for ... everyone, Braid for the puzzle fans, Dust: an Elysian Tail - for the sidescroll action platformers, Mark of the Ninja - for the stealth maniacs, Torchlight 2 for the hack and slash fans, Hard Reset for the FPS fans, Rogue Legacy for the fans of the rogue-style games (obviously), Don't Starve is for the "surviving" type of games, Jamestown - old school arcade game, Legend of Grimrock - for old-school dungeon "exploration", Trine 1 - puzzle platformer, Trine 2 - same thing as the prequel, Lone Survivor - a bit of horror, a bit of action, a bit of just being psychological.
These are just MY personal MUST PLAY indie games you can find on Steam ...
My picks:
Bastion - best indie game I have ever played
Limbo
MagickaÂ
Orcs Must Die! (+Orcs Must Die! 2)
Trine (Trine 2)
Bastion is amazing. Can't wait for Transistor.would totally recommend Bastion, Castle Crashers, Mark of the Ninja, Revenge of the Titans, Vessel, Swrod and Swrocery, and To the Moon.Â
Â
If you like some artsy fartsy stuff, check out Thirty Flights of Loving and Dear Esther.Â
SaudiFury
Limbo, Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Bastion seems great too, I have only played the demo, but I do own it.
I like limbo and atom zombie smasher
If you like indie games look at the humble bundles, lots of games for cheap
Wow, many awesome suggestions. I def think I'll get Braid, Deadlight, and possibly Mark of the Ninja. Seems like side-scrolling is where it's at with Indie games. Really hope a bunch of the suggestions here are featured in the upcoming Steam sales.Â
recettear: An item shop's tale (it counts, right?)
To the moon
FTL
The Binding Of Issac
The Deponia games (only if you like adventure games
World of goo (this indie btw? uncertain getting hard to tell)
If some of the above are NOT indie, then:
Legend of Grimrock
Terraria
Torchlight 2
Oh and since Amnesia: The dark descent is listed as indie... then THAT above all else, no really...
Mount & Blade : Warband is the best indie game I have ever played. The amount of content and mods for that game is ****ing insane. Has the best melee sword combat ever (much better than Chivalry), as well as a huge sandbox world. Has fun multiplayer as well. Next up would be Red Orchestra 2 / Rising Storm. These are must-have multiplayer shooters if you enjoy detailed, realistic FPS mechanics as well as teamwork. Braid is an amazing but short puzzle platformer. Limbo is fun but even shorter. KHAndAnime
Warband and RO2 have more content than most AAA titles released this gen. 150+ hrs on Warband and I've never beat it lol.
Q.U.B.E. by Toxic (my all-time fave indie game)
Unmechanical by Talawa
Rochard by Recoil
The Swapper by Facepalm
The Stanley Parable by Galactic Cafe
Vessel by Zoo

look at the humble-bundle website and you can get good indie games for very low (or really expensive if that's how you roll)
