I'd say Dawn of War.
I love its pace and brutality. Fire up a game and you'll probably be fighting within the first two minutes - thanks to the territory based resource system. And the combat pretty much never stops - constant fighting for about fifteen minutes. The squad based mechanic and the reinforcement system means you don't need to deal with the fairly tedious logistics of moving units from base to combat zone. It's just constant glorious fighting.
And then there's the brutality. It's mostly infantry based, so you get lots of men dying horribly. You get brutal combat as infantry is blown, torn and ripped apart. Units scream and shout as they fight and it's a pleasure to both watch and listen to it. Just simply watching a line of men shooting at the enmy line of men, I find it a pure joy to watch.
And that it's set in my favourite roleplaying universe, Warhammer 40K, is just the icing on the cake.
The best RTSs ive played are Command and conquer games and World in conflict!!
what i see is, if the game is good, you dont realy see a BIIIG difference between two TRSs. its the story that makes the difference for me.. ive played alot of RTSs like, CnC 1st series, red alart, AOG series, rush for berlin and rush for the bomb, but world in conflict is very significant for me because, you dont have to spend hours and hours defending your base and collectn resources, wel some would say, thats a clssic feature of a RTS, but if you have played alot of RTSs, you should definitely try WIC too, becase, yor tactics really come to play in it... you would feel unrealistic becase you dont gather resources, thanks to the awsome game design... finished it few days back, i had a real ride with it
and, if you have not still played, try Command and conquer games, i would safely say, from the very 1st cnc game to CnC 3, all the games had been fantastic, like age of empires for ancient classic, CnC is like a bench mark for Si-Fi and military RTS.. CnC 3s expansion, kanes wrath is on da way, and it too would surely be awsome...
Gamespot review fro empire earth 3 is still not out, but it is also a great game.. if you are into military type RTS, try Act of war games if you can find... they are old, but great games....
Homeworld. The best thing to happen to the genre since its conception. Great story plus revolutionary gameplay.
Followed closely by Dawn of War, the second best thing to happen to the genre. I love how resources are territory, and the whole atmosphere is awesome: bloodthirsty orcs, fanatical humans, undead (?) marines, and aliens. Plus it was my first introduction to the Warhammer universe (actually, Dark Omen was, but I didnt know it at the time).
But, for the sake of tradition, I gotta say the whole C&C series is my favorite. Red ALert being the pinnacle of the series imo. And C&C 3 was awesome, made me feel like I was 12years old again.
Age of Empires 2. that game is just so so fun still today, and you can play a 3hour battle against a friend have a blast and the time will just fly by.
Company of heroes. It is just genious with its territory system and the enourmous micro needed to win. It both awards strategic and tactical play.
CNC 3. Its just so fast paced and fun. simply just fun and balanced old school rts (with resources etc) its kinda the same as Age of empires 2 just 100X faster.
Warcraft 3. Well its just a great RTS, one of the bests.
Supreme commander is my favorite rts by far, sad to see its not very well represented here :(
ohh well.....
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
IT NEVER GETS OLD!
nic4games
Especially because whenever it starts to get "out-of-date", so to speak, Relic/THQ release a new expansion for it :)
The Total Was series is my fav. I am playing Medieval 2 Total War right now and it kicks so much a**. The ability to go from turn-based to real-time is great.
