You'll probably struggle with that budget, but you'd be looking for soemthign that has a gig of RAM, a 7600GO/X1600 Mobility, and probably one of the better procs. Most laptops like this are 15.4" to 17". Is that going to be too big?

Well I was hoping for something more portable but that's fine. I was thinking about getting this one for awhile now

Not going to happen.

For that price you're stuck with a 15.4" laptop, which may not be all that small. If you want smaller the price goes up a fair bit. Same goes with RAM - you likely won't find over 1GB in a laptop under $1000. Also, if you want to play the occasional game you'll need one of the low-end cards...maybe a GeForce 7300 or a Radeon X1400. They're both pretty slow in laptop terms (a 7600 or X1600 would be a better bet for casual gaming) but will work.

Even if you find a suitable laptop and upgrade the memory yourself, you'll probably be pushing $1100 or $1200, but I may be wrong.

$1200 is fine. I want a high end laptop that will last me 5 years though. And I can always buy CD/DVD burners and other upgrades right?

I really wasn't planning on playing games on it. I asked the guy he said the same and that it can probably play low-end games which is fine.
