Sequels that blew away their predecessor.

'Blew Away' are strong words, and I can't really think of any sequels that stomped all over their predecessors, except perhaps Return To Castle Wolfenstein. Some sequels were obviously better looking and more technically proficient, but sometimes fell short in terms of story or longevity. Anyway, some games that I feel were 'better' than their predecessors include:

Age Of Empires II

Duke Nukem 3D
Eye Of The Beholder II
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield and Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear
SWAT 3
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Ultima Underworld II
Cossacks: The Art Of War
FEAR 2
Gothic II
Heretic II
Max Payne 2
Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time

And the controversial ones:

Fallout 3. Yes, I've played the original Fallout (in fact, I'm replaying it as I'm playing Fallout 3), and I have to be honest, I find Fallout 3 more immersive and engaging. I think the devs really managed to nail the atmosphere, and retain most of the elements of the preceding games.

Quake IV. It didn't do anything really innovative when compared to other FPS games, but I do feel it was a better experience than it's direct sequel Quake 2 (which is the only valid comparison, because it was a continuation of the Stroggos story line, and nothing to do with Quake 3).

i disagree with almost all of these (especially the newer games). But I'll say HoMM2, Warcraft 2, Destruction Derby 2, Carmageddon 2, Baldur's Gate 2.

Many of us feel HL2 is a better game (but I wouldn't say it blows the original away), thats why. And yes, I love HL and was there when it was released in 1998.

WC3 (my favorite blizzard game by far)

HL2 (blew me away despite the fact that the first is amazing. just goes to show how great of a game it is)

Every TES game since Arena (some may argue Oblivion was not an RPG blablabla, but it was still more fun than Morrowind IMO and I clocked in way more hours)

it was more of a fps that doesnt get old and fun combat, while hl2 has pretty simple combat and stops to ask you to solver a puzzle and then move on, its just doesnt capture the action of hl1 :(dakan45

Half-Life 1 has just as many "stop and solve this problem before you can carry on" parts. That's what set it apart from other FPS games in the first place.

Those are the only ones that haven't been named yet that I can think of ATM.

I noticed Battlefield 2 hasn't been mentioned yet. It may have had a ton of bugs and balancing issues, but it was and still is an amazing online gaming experience. If it wasn't for the lack of widescreen support I would probably still be playing it game.

while I did enjoy 1942 I only really started loving it with the DC mod.
