hey guys, i've been getting artifacts recently after gaming for about 4-5 hours straight. i noticed soem wierd sounds with my fans while playing medal of honor airborne today, it seemed like the fan speed was bouncing from 40% to 100% and back every second or so.

i have an 8800GT, and the fan speed is turned up defaultly to 50% with rivatuner. after i heard the sounds, i put up the temp monitor from rivatuner. it said that my core temperature for my gpu was 102 C. thats not good at all.

i bumped the fan speed all the way up to 100% and kept playing. after a while my temperatures got to about 98 C. with the fan speeds at 100%!!!

is something really wrong here? my idle temps for my gpu right now is 63 C, and for my q6600 the average temp is about 51 C. those arent necesarily very high are they?

Yeah, your temps seem really high. I idle at around 31c, and under full load 58c.

Whats your ambient temp? Ambient temp plays a big factor on the temps of your PC hardwares.

It also seems that your casing isn't well ventilated, theres alot of hot air packets building up around your case.

1. check dust

2. make sure its not overclocked

3. reset fan to default.

4. if all else fails use your warranty

Take out the card to make sure the heatsink isn't clogged with dust. My friend's games kept crashing and his 2600XT's were running at 67 degrees idle. After we took a can or air to his heatsinks, the temps went down to 40 degrees and the crashes went away.

hm. i just played crysis online for a bit, and the temps leveled off at about 88 C. maybe it was just the game medal of honor airborne that made it go all the way up to 100 C. i still need to check for dust though, but i dont have canned air at the moment.

also, how complicated is it to install an aftermarket cooler? and could you guys recommend a good one? thanks for all the advice so far guys.

It's probably due to the OC in your sig without and aftermarket cooler. Take off your OC and see what your temps are like.

OMG turn your PC off now!!!!!!!!!!! IF you oced it get rid of that OC, the temp should never reach obove 75C on a videocard. Technically it can be allowed higher but it will eventually kill your card.

I have a XFX 8800GT EE and Ive heard that some 8800GT XXX's run to hot one way to fix it is to lower the Clock speeds to 640/1625/950(~1900) and if your temps dont lower try 600/1600/900 (~1800) which is standard clock speeds. And If your temps dont get lower like below 85C in gaming then see if its a air flow problem with your case. Take off the side cover and see what happens and if it gets better then you know what your problem is. If not just RMA it if you can.

The 8800GT's can handle upto 85C easy they are made to handle heat I read somewhere from XFX's own mouth saying they can go as high as 100C without issues so idk. All I know is try keeping the cards under 80C and you will be fine.

i have a 8800 gts 640mb(96sp not the 112 sp) and my idle is about 68-72. When playing crysis i am mid 80s. I have had this card at 102 (for just a few mins. No smoke and no problems after) but it scared me. 102 was reached by overclocking further than the factory overclock (bfg 550mhz and mem. at ?). i overclocked to 650 mhz and 822 mem. but forgot to manual the fan to 100%. I also was running a cpu overclock from 2.2 to 2.6(amd4200+x2) with a small hp case. Point is these cards can handle a lot of heat. All in all the oc did nothing to increase fps in crysis(14-17 fps dx10 veryhigh with 2xaa).

ok well its not my clock speeds that are causing the extreme heat. i didnt even try the first set you told me to, i went straight down to the default speeds (~600/1600/900). after playing stalker for about 30 mins, the speeds got up to 108 C. thats not a typo, they were that high.

upon noticing, i immediately closed the game and came here to tell you of my results. after exiting the game, the temperatures have been going down really slowly. its taken about 10mins to get down to 66 C. its never really been like that.

so what are my options that are left? i'll try taking off the side of my case next. if that doesnt work, i'll have to RMA the card?

Yeah, that's way too hot. I'd grab a thermalright HR-03 GT to cool it. I have the HR-03 Plus for my GTX and it dropped the idle temp from 55c to ~38c, and load temp rarely goes over 50-52c. It's probably the best cooler for the 8800 series. Not too hard to put on either, and it looks awesome :D

There's the HR-03 on my GTX. It rocks. Newegg doesn't have it, but you can get it on ncix. http://www.ncixus.com/products/27412/HR-03-GT/THERMALRIGHT/ and for a fan: http://www.ncixus.com/products/19036/FBA09A12H1BX/Panasonic/

Also, this is great for monitoring temps: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

Wow, I would check and see if the gpu fan is even running. Then I would check and see if theres enough or too much thermal paste on the card and adjust it as needed. Getting an aftermarket cooler is piontless with the temps your are getting. If you dont want to check the thermal paste on the card just RMA it and XFX will ethier fix or replace it their support is really good.

well guys, it looks like i'll have to RMA it.

i took the side of my case off AND turned the fan speeds for my gpu up to 100% (they were previously on 50%), and while it did lower the temperature a little bit, it still bounced around from 92-98 C. the temp for my cpu also only went down about 4 degrees celcius, so that tells me its definately not an airflow problem.

sigh. could anyone give me a rough process of how to RMA something like this? i've never done it before. also, how long can RMA'ing a card take?
