So... Don't Expect Valve Announcements at E3

Half-Life and Steam developer Valve is "not exhibiting" at E3 next week, the company has confirmed. Though it may not have any announcements to make at E3 itself, Valve may still have some news around E3. The company's annual Summer Sale is rumored to begin June 11 and run through June 20.

I kind of expected it, I am not sure how big thier Dev department is, but most games so far in this gen has taken more then a handful of years. And it is not THAT long since Portal 2 was released.

Add to that my general idea that Valve seems to care less and less of the typical establishment of the industry. I suspect that they may be at gamescom, but even that will likely not be earthshattering if they show up.

I couldn't care less to be honest. I have not played anything enjoyable from them since the original HL.

Valve is particularly irrelevant when it comes to creating games.

@Pedro: Say what? They created one of the most acclaimed game series in the history of gaming, HL. Portal 1 and 2 are generally considered top rated games. Counter-Strike has remained one of the most played online shooter since... forever. Team Fortress has a huge following too. Dota 2 is consistently one of the games with more people playing.

Imagine if they were relevent.

Pretty sure valve fired every programmer and hired hardware developers in their place. So they couldn't have possibly anything to show at E3 anyways. Better for them to skip it.

Since they don't have any shareholders to try and impress and they are a juggernaut in the PC space... they pretty much do their own thing. I still remember when HL2 was first shown at E3 2003 and it blew away everybody. That would be very hard to top. I just wish they would develop and release HL3.

@BassMan: My hope regarding HL3 is that it will surface along with their VR. Valve always pushed the envelope with HL it makes some sense to use HL to create the first landmark in VR. HL3 confirmed! ...not really. :(

Valve is a Corporation, therefore, don't care about game development and care more about making more profits

I'm not surprised. They always seem to do their own thing and seem to do a lot of announcing as they go instead of waiting for big moments to announce something. So in that sense, there's not much incentive to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to appear at E3 and have nothing to show.

I expected them to not showcase anything at E3. But their official confirmation pissed me off for some reason... As if it was really needed. Valve only cares about printing money through Steam. Even if they decide to make some big game in the future, it'll only be to promote their agenda, like F2P and stuff with Left 4 Dead 3 etc.

This is a bad news for me. I guess that in this case a new L4D is not near us.

@klunt_bumskrint: Hehe :) If I was Lord Gaben, HL3 would have been released long ago. I admire what Valve has done for PC gaming, but I think they seem to have forgotten that they are a game developer as well. I don't understand why they can't release games on a regular basis in addition to the Steam platform related stuff. They have an insane amount of cash and can draw in the best talent. It sucks that they don't focus more on game development.

Valve seems to be one of the few honest companies out there when it comes to the promotion of their products.. E3 quite frankly in my eyes is a snake oil merchants paradise where you just have a bunch of entertainers on stage with big trailers showing you most likely a heavily altered trailer/gameplay that is in no way representative to the actual game.. Furthermore this isn't surprising on the fact that the majority of Valve's developments are hardware based things that really aren't the main focus on these events compared to things like CES.

Whatever... I never cared (or liked) much about Valve. IF they were to take their shit seriously, they would have HL-3 completed years ago. I don't think you can even consider them a active game developer nowadays. They've mostly become an online distributer for the most part.

They don't care and they don't need it to announce anything. They don't make single player games anymore.

Rockstar never shows at E3, because they're much like the honeybadger when it comes to things like that.

Valve doesn't do it, because they've got nothing to show.

Bit surprised, considering they are releasing their VR kit sometime this year. For something supposed to be released this year, they are very hush hush about it. That is a worry since most companies throw their products on the hype train.
Then again I guess E3 is only about the games, not the hardware.

The number of shits I give about Valve has dwindled to 0.

I'd rather get excited about companies that still make games.

I'm kind of late to the topic, but like many of you, I wasn't surprised at all by Valve's absence at E3. It's unfortunate; Half-Life is a great series that deserved more installments--let alone an actual storyline conclusion--but I've come to accept that it's not happening.

Great poll images, by the way! :-)

Dumb comment. DotA 2 just got Source Engine 2 and full mod support and they're irrelevant when it comes to creating games? Sure they don't shit out dumb sequels every year and I'm glad they don't. They constantly update and show support to their games. Team Fortress 2 has had over 500 updates and a lot of those have had major changes to gameplay. It's practically a brand new game from what it was when it was first released. Team Fortress 2 in 2010 and now in 2015 has had more gameplay changes than Call of Duty or Assassins Creed in their entire franchises combined.

it would have been nice if they were there. granted it would have led to speculation about HL3 (seriously let it go....or beg for a kickstarter :P) and that would have led to dissapointment.

i suppose what would they show though?

no point in singleing out valve mind. where was EA (origin), ubisoft (UPlay) and CDPR (GOG) ? if these companies want to promote their services and stores then that would also have been a good opportunity (i just hope the crowd would be civil when EA and ubisoft appear. it would look very bad for the platform if they were booed off the stage. all companies have the right to fight their corner on the PC)
