Just bought 2x2GB of RAM and system info says I have 3199mb.

Is this numerical discrepancy due to the weird gigabyte-into-megabyte 'translation' or is my new RAM faulty/deficient?

Thanks.

Are you using windows 32 bit or 64 bit? If you are using 32bit then that looks about right. A 32 bit os can only address about 3.25 GB of ram.

Yup, it only recognizes and uses 3199mb becasue that's all the memory 32 bit supports, while 64 bit supports as much ram as you will ever need.

Yep - WindowsXP 32-bit. Thanks guys - that was freaking me out a little. Will upgrade to Windows7, soon-ish.
