Hmmm... Without thinking too hard (let's be real, to answer this question definitively would take years of replaying games and vigorous note-taking):

Morrowind

  • Awesome world/lore
  • Great quests
  • Cool characters
  • Freedom
  • Mods
  • CQC was not the greatest but has improved thanks to mods
  • Magic combat was really fun
  • Sense of discovery
  • Good graphics for the time
  • Good graphics for the modern day with mods
  • Diverse set of races
  • Lots of factions

For real though. I can't be sure I'd have a different answer to your question tomorrow.

Funny how in a gaming forum where people build their own machines and are "educated" this would be the hardest question of all..

Having more than 5 good games to choose from has that effect.

the question is tough one on purpose to get pc gamers to to think of all the great pc games that they have played which would be the one they would pick out of all of them.

If i had to choose one, probably Ultima 7.

Pretty dated gameplay and skill gain system but for its time it worked very good. Especially how you could have several allies with you at all times to fight along side you. They weren't just minions for hire like in skyrim, they were long time allies with a complicated history with your character.

Also, the world was gigantic filled with unique npcs doing daily tasks whether you were there or not and it made the world feel more alive than even most games do these days with their static characters that never walk around or do anything. If you want to make a world that feels alive and real, Ultima 7 should be your template to start from.

It's tough for me to pick between Deus Ex and Morrowind. I'll just go with Morrowind because of the mod-factor.

Morrowind is my favorite RPG. It put you in a relatively drab fantasy world with a very engrossing culture. It's endless fun exploring the landscape and uncovering the vast multitude of quests. With all the options the game gave, it gave you a true sense of role-playing. There's so much content that it takes well over a hundred hours to see all of it. Lots of amazing mods. Was very disappointed by the sequels that followed.

Oblivion and Skyrim had massive, relatively empty, randomly-generated landscapes sparsely populated by cut-and-paste dungeons and randomly-generated quests (that you find on a compass) governed by scaled leveling to remove any real sense of danger. In contrast, Morrowind's world was less massive in scale but was hand-crafted and was much more rich with unique, interesting content. Not being constrained by the limitations of voice-acting allowed Morrowind to tell a more nuanced, developed narrative while giving each quest significantly more context and background (e.g. being told directions, which you have to follow, instead of given a magical marker on a magical compass). There was more gear variety, more skill variety, more spell variety, more quest variety, etc. making it feel massive in comparison to its sequels.

Guess 7 days to die because there's so much to do and crafting survival games are my favorite. Plus the game is still early access so changes all the time. Its my most played game on Steam.

Freespace 2 - it's the greatest space combat sim ever made. Excellent gameplay, storytelling, voice acting, graphics, music. It even holds up surprisingly well almost 20 years later.

Battlefield 1942. I was amazed by the scope of the game and all the random things that would happen during a match. It was just so much fun. I spent countless hours playing it on a LAN and online with friends. Obviously, the formula has been improved upon in many ways over the years, but the core foundation of Conquest was established way back in BF 1942. It was a revolutionary game for me and BF still remains my go to MP game.

This is not System Wars. It just has to be a game that you enjoyed on PC.

I do have a fav game I just remembered lol. AC Black flag. I played this 3 times over and loved every bit of it. This is one of the last games where I didn't have rage quits including 1st play threw. It straight forward and not many keys to remember Wish there where more like it. I hate crafting games these days even the tiniest bit I don't like.

I agree with all that. I would throw in Battlefield 2 as well. More of the same with a few improvements, I can't get enough of them both.

Insurgency - most realistic weapon feeling IMO and no weird hit sounds so you have no idea if youve killed the enemy or not. great fun

Battle for Middle Earth series and Tabletop Simulator for exclusives.

BfME 1, 2, and Witch King is my favorite games of all time probably

Tabletop Simulator is literally joy though, mods (which there is a lot of) make it essentially "hey can you play it on a table? Then you can play it on this game for free once you buy the base game online with anyone with simple voice chat"

@putaspongeon: I so much wanted to like Tabletop Simulator. I love tabletop gaming, particularly designer boardgames. That said, I can't help feeling like an awkward klutz with the TS controls. I have zero hand-eye coordination (one of the reasons maybe why I gravitate more towards board games). Fortunately, I've been able to form my own local group to play on occasion. I get the appeal of TTS -- I just wish it didn't make me feel so clumsy.

Alpha Centauri

Time hasn't done it any favors, but I still find myself dragging it out every year or so. And almost every time, I find myself getting addicted to it all over again. I've actually played in a couple of AC tournaments years ago, and did fairly well in them (first place in a small tournament, Second place out of about 49 people in a larger one).
