Morrowind screen flicker (yes, morrowind)

I just got an old copy of Morrowind and it's giving me some problems.

Everything seemed to install fine but when I start the game up the whole screen flickers with four or five thick white lines flashing and moving up and down the screen. The flickering starts as soon as the game starts including the Bethesda logo and the loading screens and it continues into the actual game. The game seems to run but it's impossible to play because the large white lines end up covering at least half of the screen. I've done some searching and the only problems other people seem to have is texture flickering or a background pop-up flickering into view. Neither of these is my problem. I've put my screen refresh rate up as high as it will go and it didn't change a thing (it doesn't really look like a refresh rate problem - that was just a suggestion from another forum).

I have a pretty crappy computer but I figured it was good enough to run a six year old game.

Does anyone remember any problem like this and how to fix it?

First, good choice on morrowind, its a great game and there are still more mods coming out for morrowind than oblivion some weeks.

Try updating your video card drivers, and also update the game.

I tried the updating idea and it didn't change anything...

If you or anyone else has any more ideas, I'd love to hear them.
