almost every game on pc does now, its easy enough when the audio doesnt have to be converted to dolby digital like they are on console. Although many ps3 games output uncompressed audio, really every game should be able to ouput atleast 5.1 pcm considering sounds in video games are generated in real time then converted to dolby on consoles.

Really? Is there an option in Mass Effect 2 or Dawn of War 2?

I think those games just use whatever you have set in windows. I don't have my 7.1 setup right at the moment, so i cant say for sure since the only way I can 100% tell is by listening to my speakers. Ive noticed games such as prototype and tomb raider underworld seemed to be full 7.1 if i remember correctly. Dont quote me, my memory is a bit foggy but it seems almost every game I tried output 7.1 unless it was older.

Mind if I ask how to set up 7.1 settings on Windows 7?

Every Steam Engine game uses 7.1. Past that it is very hit and miss in my experience.

Windows 7 Control Panel > Sound > Right click Speakers > 7.1 Surround

Anarchist-TKC-1

I right click my device and click Configure Speakers and there's only one option: 7.1 Surround. So how do I enable this on games that dont have the option for it? i.e. Mass Effect 2

Thanks for the help btw :D

Why are you in the Device Manager? Go to as instructed within Windows 7. For games, you set the sound settings to Windows Default UNLESS it has a specific option for 5.1 or 7.1 then tick them. That's how I do it anyway with my 5.1.

I clicked Sound then right clicked my device and it went to this window with this guy sitting and speakers all around him to test my 7.1. Is that the wrong window?

In my Sound window, I have speakers at the top (the same as your device I guess). There is a configure speakers option, I click that and there's the plan view of the guy in the middle with speakers all around. You can also hit test when you right click speakers/device? It then plays a melody sequentially into each speaker. The bass is very deep on mine and scares the crap outta me lol

sounds like some extra software, should work fine that way though. Do you not hear anything in the two back speakers when playing me 2?

Yeah we are seeing the same window, does that mean I did your instructions right and my games will play in 7.1 if supported? And now that you mention it, the bass test is kinda scary...haha

Yes actually I do, but not on my side ones. I'm guessing that means ME2 is only meant for 5.1?

Yes your settings should be fine. If you could hear the melody from each of the speakers, then it's working. Go try a game with windows default. By the way on my surround sound system, I have the option to manually adjust the volume of the speakers. I have my speakers at the volume I want to hear them at, then check the sound is about equal. The rear speakers are further away so I boosted them up a little.
