Amazing really, I was thinking of upgrading my X58 setup for X99 but for £57 the Xeon 5650 (6 cores, 12 threads, and higher clock speed) could really breathe some new life into my setup and keep me going for quite a bit longer.

even if your motherboard has the right socket for the xeon, it may not work... I was actually gonna put a xeon cpu in an old motherboard i had, but i wasn't completely sure it would work cause it wasn't listed on the cpu supported list...

your getting it so cheap i guess it makes not a big loss, but those server cpus have limited support on regular motherboards. Maybe try to find out if your x58 motherboards bios supports xeon cpus.

Make sure your MOBO is compatible with Xeon, not many MOBOs support Xeon.

It depends on which CPU you're comparing with (what do you own btw?) and for what purpose? (gaming, editing)

I have it now install to my pc and OC to 4.4GHz, actually this CPU wasn't listed in the cpu support list from my mobo in fact it didn’t have any xeon on the list, but I see another guy with the same mobo that have the same cpu, asus just forgot to add it in the list...

I have to say for the money it was a huge upgrade, before I had an i7 920 @ 4.1GHz. Also I am going to sell the i7 I still have the box after almost 6 years!!! So this upgrade is going to cost even less.

In Cinebench R15 I get a score of 918 just amazing.

To get things into perspective

  • Xeon x5650 @ 4.4GHz (£57) = 918
  • i7 5930K stock (£439) = 1083
  • i7 5960X stock (£779) = 1337

I will post some benchmarks in a few days (when I have the time) i7 920 @ 4.1GHz vs x5650 @ 4.4GHz

Although I will probably end up disable the HT just like I did with the i7 920 because without it you can get 2% more performance in the 6 threads and that is more important (in the overwhelming majority of games) I mean how many games use 12 threads?

Battlefield 4? LOL

Xeons are mostly used for server PCs but you can use them as workstations as well.

Some benchmarks with my old and new cpu.

Benchmarksi7 920 @ 4.1GHz (HT off)x5650 @ 4.4GHz (HT on)
Prime95 Temps67C78C
wPrime 32M (all threads)9.068 sec4.734 sec (91%)
wPrime 32M (single thread)34.801 sec32.275 sec (8%)
wPrime 1024M (all threads)279.734 sec139.6 sec (100%)
CINEBENCH R15 (all threads)484 score916 score (89%)
CINEBENCH R15 (single thread)125 score130 score (4%)
Metro 2033 (2560x1440)74.49 fps79 fps (6%)
Metro 2033 (1280x720)112.18 fps140 fps (25%)

keep in mind that the i7 here is in disadvantage in the benchmarks that use more than 4 threads because HT is off in order to achieve 4.1GHz with good temps, at the same time x5650 is in disadvantage in single thread benchmarks because HT is enable, I will post some more benchmarks with HT disable to see how much the performance will increase in benchmarks with 6 or less threads.

I think your upgrade was worth it for sure by the looks of it.

I'll list a comparison of my cpu for you, I have a 4770k@4.5ghz and in Cinebench R15 strangely enough i got the same score as you did with 916, for 1 thread i got a score of 182.

but its funny how little cpus have come in the last 5 years... such a little improvement other then power efficiency. I got a 2600k in 2011, similar performance to my newer cpu even though its over 3 years older.

Didn't bother with upgrade even though I know got the best single cpu x58 motherboard except for the blating socket burn problem that many has.

I switched to Ivy Bridge 4.5ghz cause the Foxconn Bloodrage has a socket burn 1 pin total black 2 half black on northwest section. Switching is not option either as they replace same socket for 150 dollar. o_o

The x58 running 4ghz(HT off) i7 920 c0 200mhz busspeed without using overvolt as I used guideline based on air setting.

Nice man, my X5650 will be arriving this week. Gonna replace the i7 930 in my HTPC.

I'm probably only gonna OC to about 3.8Ghz since I keep my CPU fans spinning low to keep noise down.

I payed $65 USD shipped for mine

Don't worry about the heat, X5650 runs cooler than the i7, and also can tolerate much higher temps, so you should aim at 4.2GHz

Yah its pretty cool that even with 6 cores, and higher clock rates. The 5670 @ 2.9 - 3.33Ghz only uses 95 TDP vs the 130 TDP of the i7 930 @ 2.8 - 3.06Ghz.

God bless 32nm

Nice. That's a really tempting purchase but I think I'm done sinking money into my 1366 platform. I'd rather just improve the cooling of my case so I can better OC my i7 930, and then I'll be able to better cool whatever CPU I get in the future. At the moment I can push my i7 930 to 4.4 GHz without it getting too hot. That's with HT on (it improves FPS by 3-4 for most games, I tested). By the end of the year hopefully I can put my i7 930 in my secondary PC and get on a newer MOBO platform, my 1366 board is missing a lot of nice features that the newer platforms have (UEFI, Intel SATA 3 port, etc.)

I dunno man, id really think about it for the performance you get out of a small $60-70

I don't spend my spare time running Cinebench. I play games. According to game-benchmarks I've seen, I'd gain maybe 5 FPS. Besides, I just checked and my board doesn't support it. I'll just stash that money towards my new setup.

If your mobo support 32nm 980x etc then it is almost serten that will support these xeon's. My mobe for example it dosent say that it supports these xeon's but evidently it does.

Well I have a Gigabyte X58A UD3R Rev 1.0 and I think I need 2.0 to use it based on my brief Google-fu

How high of an OC do you think I could get? I've got an H-240X to cool it with.

depends on your silicon lottery, however if u want a higher chance of getting a good binned chip. go for the higher models like the 5670 or 5675. i got mine up to 4.6ghz on a megahalem air cooler, urs will cool better so u can maybe push higher
